Star Trek Universe Thread

I've still been plugging my way through Voyager at about 2-3 episodes a week. Almost to final season.

Just watched a really fantastic late episode "Blink of an Eye" that made some of the bad episodes before and after totally worth it. Great true sci-fi.

I just marathoned voyager recently, that was a great one.

It could have been a simple typical ok episode with the premise, but some of the wrinkles they threw in made it an A+. It might be my favorite one 6.5 seasons in.

Way better than any of the "oh Earth development in the past" episodes that every series seems to have 5-6 of.

I get a real kick out of some of the recycled plot devices that always either save the ship or destroy the ship...

Data
10/10 ability to save the ship or save countless lives
10/10 ability to destroy the ship/end countless lives
Data is Superman and Thanos at the same time. Tough call if I left him stranded on an away mission.

Holodeck
2/10 ability to save the ship, only mildly useful
10/10 ability to destroy the ship or destroy lives
Almost every holodeck episode you know at some point it's going to nearly kill everybody. I'm disabling this thing if I'm captain. The Holodeck, Data and Borg may be the most dangerous things in space.

Seven of Nine
6/10 ability to save the ship or save countless lives
3/10 ability to destroy the ship or kill everybody
She doesn't have the invincible world saving ability of Data, but she doesn't frequently almost destroy the ship like Data. Definitely worth the risk of having.

Holographic Doctor
3/10 ability to save everybody
3/10 ability to destroy the ship
You'd think he'd be similar to a typical doctor but in a dozen episodes he either saves or nearly destroys the ship.

Vulcan/Klingon crew member
4/10 ability to save everybody
2/10 ability to destroy the ship
Just watch out for the few episodes where they lose control of emotions. Low risk, high reward.

My kids have been watching an original Star Trek episode before going to bed and they love the series. Something about the premise, colors and even the audio quality really chills them out and helps get them ready for bed. My 6 year old has decided to be Sulu for Halloween this year.

Voyager had some of the worst episodes but also some of the very best. 'Blink of an Eye' being the best in my opinion. The 'Scorpion' two parter was also good as was 'Living Witness'

I do that as a 42 year old. Specifally ToS.

My coworkers son and daughter love ToS and they are 8 and 11.

In college my asian roommate bought this yellow sweater that was way too small and we took photos of him with the remote control as a phaser because he looked like Sulu.

Just finished the season finale of Lower Decks and this show has really impressed me. The finale was the “Trek-iest” episode of the entire season, and really has me looking forward to S2.

Interesting take for sure as I've been catching up on the show over the past week and have watched all episodes except the finale. I've gotta admit that so far I'm probably on the complete opposite end of the fence. Outside of a couple earlier episodes, I've not enjoyed the show really at all. The humor hasn't worked, I've HATED some of the storylines we've run into with a few episodes, and I don't even like where a few episodes has taken the Star Trek universe. Regardless, I'm still hoping I really enjoy the finale like you did and I'll still likely follow-up on a S2 providing they do it simply because its a very low time commitment to do so (few and short episodes with minimal brain activity required). Good to hear your take on the show though. Glad somebody really enjoys it.

As hard as I was on Lower Decks in this post from yesterday, I finally just watched the finale and loved it. The finale was finally everything I wanted from this show. The humor finally worked while showcasing all the best parts of each character. I had fun throughout. Did it redeem the show for me? Not sure, but it definately left a better taste in my mouth.

I’m glad you stuck with it - the finale is the highlight of the series and actually builds on those previous episodes.

I think the reason Lower Decks clicked with me so well is that I had just rewatched TNG, DS9, and S1 of TOS, so I was able to catch most of the jokes/references easily. The finale definitely felt like a Star Trek episode: it was the first episode that actually had a message for the audience and that really resonated with me.

Maybe I'll have to give "Lower Decks" another try. I watched the first few episodes and mildly enjoyed them until the character of Mariner Beckett, whom I found unbearably obnoxious, just got to be too much for me. She single-handedly drove me to stop keeping up with it. But, sounds like it might be worth getting back into from what I'm reading on this thread.

And yes, I realize that I did just go on a mini-rant about an animated character.

Episode 1 of Discovery aired last night and I would have to say it was OK. If you have a 4K TV you are going to wowed by the visuals- they shot the series at some great locations that really pop on screen. This was a Michael Burnham-focused episode to set the tone for the season. I’m super excited to see how this season plays out, but if you were waiting to buy CBS All-Access just for this show I would say wait a week (or more) because this episode, while pretty, wasn’t worth the cost of a subscription.

Anybody been watching Star Trek Discovery Season 3 so far? If so, just curious your thoughts.
It’s OK. I really like the premise of this season, but it’s kind of been a slog to get through so far. It’s still visually appealing but I wouldn’t consider it must-watch yet.

This season takes place in the distant future, 100 years after an event called “The Burn” where all dilithium combusted and destroyed all warp-capable ships that were traveling at warp-speed at the time the event occurred. The cause of the burn is not known, but the after-effect caused the federation to dissolve, so finding the cause of the burn appears to be the story-arc for the season. The crew of the Discovery are on a mission to seek out the last remnants of the federation and are still able to use the spore drive, as well as their dilithium supply to travel at warp speeds. Dilithium is still usable but is in short-supply which will make Discovery a target.

Have really enjoyed the last couple episodes. Was actually kind of nice to slow down a bit and just focus on the characters.

I just watched entire series too. Gets much better as it goes. Lots of fan service but I like that more in an animated setting.

I had been wanting to check it out but became urgent when I might have a chance to work on some products for it.

Definitely going to watch S2.

Looks like with the new Paramount President in place, Noah Hawley's Star Trek film is currently put on hold as she wants to take the franchise in a new direction. Hard to know what to think of this as I'm one who just really wants a new Star Trek film. I really hope her new direction isn't exclusively on television because that would suck.

Discovery finale was last Thursday. It certainly ended a lot better than it started. Best episode was the 2nd to last episode, which is an homage to "Die Hard."

I'll avoid spoilers for those that are going to binge-watch now that the entire season is available to watch. If you are a fan of Discovery Seasons 1/2, then you would enjoy it if you can grind through the first couple of episodes.

I've finished Discover S3 as well and have to admit I was a bit disappointed by the end. While hesitant at first of the jump to the future and what that would both look like and play out, I actually really enjoyed the future world they created for the most part. To me, the worldbuilding was the best part of the season. However, I thought where the series lacked was with some of its meandering in the middle, particularly with a clear 2-episode side-tangent backdoor pilot for a Philippa Georgiou spinoff, and also with its poor payoffs in the end. Was it overall bad? Probably not, as there was times I was pretty into it. However, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed overall. In fact, of all the Discovery seasons, I'd probably say #2 was my favorite, followed by #1, and then this one as my least favorite.
