Special Teams Coach?

Punt return man consistently 15 yards to short, chasing balls over his head tried to catch one over shoulder that almost resulted in turnover. MAJOR ISSUE that needed to be addressed during game and never was!

John Harbaugh and Bill Belichek both had 4 separate stints as Special Teams coaches prior to landing their head coach gigs. People who don’t think this is an important don’t realize some of footballs smartest minds are where they are because of their success as special teams coaches.

It appears it's -- Either special teams (overall) is an afterthought/lowest priority; or it's considered as important as any area, but is a failure in too much of the development/strategy.

Either way, if that's the weak link, and it continues that way, then you have to compensate by maximizing everything else so you don't have to rely on ST as a deciding factor.

Glad to see that some more folks are realizing that we do have someone on the coaching staff with Special Teams as their designated area of focus.

Coach Campbell is addressing this. Does anyone seriously think that he doesn't know what the special teams issues likely cost him last year?

This is Rob Wright's first year on the staff.
Yes, for the last 3 years we did not have any coach with special teams anything listed under their authority.
Campbell's first 2 years coaching here he had Bryan Gasser.

I was curious and went to look at what the other teams on our schedule have on their staffs for special teams coaches or coordinators or whatever they want to give for titles.
3 teams have nobody listed in their coaching staff (including Oklahoma).
2 only had an analyst which I would guess is close in duties and what NCAA rules would allow a "quality control" staff member to do. There were some teams that also had an analyst in addition to their more formally titled coach, but I didn't note them along the way.

In the chart here I tacked on the "Years Present" that shows how many years they've been coaching Sp Teams at their current school, and "Years coaching" is their total years coaching in college football (sorry if my quick math got off by a year or if they happened to take a year off or something)

How many snaps do the special team players get the rest of the game ? Are any of them 1st team ? 2nd team ?

Great KU has a special teams coordinator - another game we lose in that phase of the game!! J k;)

2019
Iowa - Return men run into each other, lose by 1

Baylor - Miss 2 FGs, lose by 2

KSU - KO Return TD to start game, almost every possession KSU starts in favorable territorywe can’t figure our **** out lose by 10

2020
OSU - Miss 2 FGs, lose by 3
OU - Missed FG, lose by 6

2021
Iowa - Punting **** show
Baylor - 20 yard punt, KO return TD

Don’t preach execution and doing the little things right and be this big of a ******* mess in the special teams game. Over half of our losses aren’t because we’re outplayed, it’s because our special teams are ******* incompetent

Yeah, it has been pretty disappointing to finally have decent offense and defensive players, and then blow games with special team failures. CMC is right, ISU is a team that needs to win in the margins. So far they are not doing that, but the nothing is more glaring than the number of Special team gaffs. The Iowa game was special. Twice didn't field the punt and twice fielded the punt inside the 10.

To me this just proves we have the least experienced person in charge of ST of those with data provided. The only reason we are having the groundswell of criticism is because it is a glaring weakness. If things were going ok no problem with what we have but there is a problem and what we have is QC guy with no years of ST coaching, which confirms what we are seeing on the field.

Sorry if the chart was a bit messy and disorganized. Rob Wright has 6 years of special teams coaching experience at the P5 NCAA level. The zero in the chart is because it's his first year at Iowa State.
