Southern Scuffle 2019

I think pushing your opponent out of bounds is stalling. Ref has to decide if you are pushing or other guy is backing out. Hate that stalling rule.

Pushing your opponent out of bounds is stalling but only if you're doing it to avoid wrestling or just bullrushing them out of bounds without actually attempting a move (like a certain school out east likes to do). It isn't supposed to be stalling if you just go out of bounds while wrestling, like what happened in that match.

So does the new 'hands to the face' penalty apply to everyone except Daton Fix? Great talent and not the difference in the match but I've been so frustrated with that call all year and he did it continuously.

The Penn State wrestler that Gomez pinned (Bravo-Young), majored his opponent (Sean Nickell) in 3rd place match.

Final results

125: Alex Mackall - 6th
133: Austin Gomez - 2nd

141: Ryan Leisure - DNP (2-2)
149: Jarrett Degen - 5th
157: Chase Straw - 7th
174: Marcus Coleman - 6th

It is improvement. We used to have a couple guys place. We are placing more and wrestling competitive even in losses most times.

Didn't even get to follow on arena but have to comment on Gomez and Degen matches. Love to see Austin keep Fix to such a low score. I'm sure he wanted the W but slowing down somebody like Fix who has been on a roll says a lot. Props to Degen for avenging that loss especially when it sounds like he hasn't quite been himself.

Definitely an improvement. I realize it’s a limited set of top teams, but when was the last time we scored over 100 points in any tournament? When’s the last time we had wrestlers on the podium in 7 weights? I’m thrilled by the difference in fight these guys have compared to where we were a year ago.

Not sure if Mackall, Coleman & Gremmel did enough to get ranked in top 20, but probably right in the 20-25 range anyway.

Gremmel wasn’t seeded & got 8th, but thought he should of beat the Stanford guy in that match.

We got 3rd, which is where we should finish, but it’s good to meet expectations.

Awesome to see Degen handle Rohlfing this time. Should keep him from falling in the rankings too much. I wish he would’ve beat Berge, but Berge is a legit AA contender so it’s not a bad loss by any means.

I followed the tourney as much as possible while traveling, so unsure of all the individual results. Did any of our wrestlers (besides Gomez beating RBY) beat any ranked opponents?
