Sounds from the Crowd Today - Denver Edition

Let's don't get crazy. A lot of Husker football fans become Creighton or Kansas fans during the bball season. Occasionally you come across a real fan. They love talk about the glory of the Piakowski years, which I'm ok talking about just for reliving the old Big 8 days. They are lame supporters though. A few years ago when they made a run and made it to the dance (still haven't won a first round game) they had some excitement going on, but still couldn't shake their lameness. For example they were playing in a new arena that year for first time, Pinnacle Bank Arena. They were playing well at home and started referring to it as "Pinnacle Bank Arena Magic." I was ripping everyone for that, not original, not even easy to stay.

Another thing here that is how little they care about basketball in general. The entire nation loves these two days of the tournament. Most around here could care less...and they think of themselves as the norm. I work at the state capitol and the block all sports related content from the web in March and first week of April to "save bandwidth and ensure state workers remain productive". (Which is ironic as most around here would say "they don't care") Anyway I guarantee if the college bowl season was during the legislative session they would not block anything.

I watched one of their home games this year, I cant remember who it was against. That new gym they just built is really nice. How much did it cost do you know?

A slightly different telling of the incident here. Scroll to the end http://www.desmoinesregister.com/st...caa-tournament-takeaways-iona-gaels/81938408/

Iona’s star was called for one with 1:58 to play for talking trash toward Iowa State’s bench.
It happened with the Cyclones leading 83-76. The Gaels didn’t score the rest of the game.
“We were having fun the whole game,” English said. “That's what I felt like. A lot of people, basketball players, talking to each other.
“I mean, honestly, I was smiling like when I was talking back to the player. I didn't understand why the ref, you know, made the call.
“But, I mean, at the same time, it happens.”
There were three technical in the game — two against Iona and one against McKay.
“I'm just sad that somebody had to make that call towards the end of the game,” English said. “I felt like if that's the case, if you don't want anybody talking trash from the beginning of the game, just call it, whether it's on me or somebody else.
“One tech — you don't lose a game off of one tech, but it definitely was a big call.”

It is a nice facility. The Haymarket area is fun for sure. I think it was like $25 mil bond. They put in a restaurant tax to pay for that, which everyone gripes about. Lincoln is a horrible tax city in general.

The Iona band was freaking awesome. 6 people, and one of them was playing the cowbell. Much respect.

Dont forget that same guy played the tambourine as well. Multi-talented!

Also, I forget to mention that the locals all around us love Georges and kept talking about he looks just as smooth in person as he does on TV. It really made me step back and realize how special we are to have a guy with so much talent and love for his team, university, and fans. I mean Georges signed probably 40 kids' autographs during the second game. Itll be hard to see him go but we are lucky to have him.

My oldest son saw a game in Hilton over break, hadn't seen Iowa State in person with Georges before. He watches a lot of basketball. He felt Georges was by far the most skilled player on the floor. Was interesting to get a fresh set of eyes on our team.

That "band" drove me nuts. I think some of our band chants are stupid and annoying, but it's even more pathetic when there are only 6 people. (1 person per type of instrument)

Since no one seems to have heard English, was there anything going on when he shook hands with Prohm? Was watching for that on TV but I don't think they showed whenever they met in the line.

I don't know if I necessarily disagree with that. I still think we would have won, but they were making it interesting down the stretch and then after that call is when Iona really fell apart.

It was basically the only thing they said about the game, so that probably irritated me as much as that comment. If you hadn't seen the game, they sure didn't give an accurate impression of it. Not a big deal, just annoying after the lack of respect earlier.

While I was working yesterday the wife was getting hammed in downtown Des Moines ... and ask for vacation time before everyone else in your office takes it off so you can also join in on the shenanigans.

That does it. I have to stop listening to the FAWcasts.

No way that technical was called at that point in the game if there was not an f-bomb in there. Also the double-T earlier just "might" have given the guys some notice to the level of BS the refs were going to put up with.

When I was watching the replay, it was clear the ref was trying to steer him away from the ISU bench to his own. And I could just hear him saying, leave it alone, don't get involved, don't say anything you'll regret. He gave him three chances. Then BANG. IMO The ref was plenty patient.

It looked exactly like most technicals I've seen called. A player is barking at someone else and a ref says something or gets between them and a player continues to yap. Boom. T. Trash talking is one thing, it's when you're obviously doing it right in front of a ref and don't stop that gets you T'd up.

“People were talking trash the whole game,” English said. “Somebody told me to shut up, I just told him to shut up back, you know me. People were saying worse things than that throughout the whole game. It was just a fun atmosphere. I just don’t understand you wait until the last second to call the tech. I probably got one technical foul when I was a freshman. I don’t get technical fouls.”
Yeah, I guarantee that is not the whole story. Everyone's head turned like,"Whoa, did he just say that?"

I think a lot of what's wrong with sports comes from the adults but, unfortunately, when a coach, or in this case the media, asks a player what he did in a situation like this, he's almost always going to lie.

I guess Prohm is too classy to out him for whatever it was. I wonder if the media would be giving him this pass if he wasn't a star.

That technical foul didn't really impact the game at all. You can say momentum all you want, but even without it we were up 7 with what would have been Matty going to the line for two (I beieve there was a shooting foul called before it happened, wasn't there?)

I thought it was the Colorado football game that sealed it, when we had a real tornado at the game!

That was a fun day. We were out pregaming at our place over in Fieldstone near the West Towne Pub when the tornado was forming overhead. I want to think it ended up touching down a little further north than us. Either way still an interesting atmosphere that afternoon before going to the game. Wasn't that one of the first night games we had had at Jack Trice in quite a while?

I was surprised at how many Hawk fans were there. Had a group of 4 sitting in the row in front of us. They were mocking Georges early, didn't here much from them in the second half.

No. ISU was going to be inbounding the ball with 10 seconds left on the play clock. ISU got the two FTs (Matty made one) and then inbounded the ball with 30 seconds on the play clock.

On the broadcast I am pretty sure they said that the official told the scorekeeper that the technical was for profanity, so I'm pretty sure he didn't just tell someone to shut up. Two guys already got Ts for jawing, you'd think a senior would take a clue from that.

I learned a rule nuance yesterday. I didn't realize that on a flagrant you get both technical shots even if the shot is made. I expected Monte was going to be shooting one after the flagrant 1 rather than two. Talk about a huge possession, ISU got 6 points on that trip - Monte lay up, Monte FTs and Abdel FTs.
