So long, Oddfellows

It's usually pretty quiet in there. Not a huge surprise, but still sad.

I tried to like that place, but it just never seemed worth it. I did see that Battles BBQ with a new name is going into where Valentino's was in that same strip mall.

Did Battles close? I'm so out of the Ames loop.

Also never heard of this burger place, but sounds kinda fun.

Edit: Ah I see it's been closed for awhile.

No more Keg Shop? Man I feel bad for the Youth of today. Checking out the fire sales in the summer was a weekly event!

I liked his Italian restaurant out in West Ames a lot. He would actually walk around to the tables and check on meals. Don't see that too often.

My big problem with Oddfellows was the spicing. They didn't really add any flavor to the actual burgers - the toppings were great, but they needed to add something to the burgers to make them more than just bland hamburgers. Garlic salt, something.

I've never seen a party die faster than when we were forced to by two two smaller kegs of the some Leinenkugels beer, that I'm pretty sure they dont make anymore (for a good reason), and served them at our summer party. Only kegs they had left and of course were on fire sale.

I miss grabbing Best Chests - 30 of Milwaukee's Best.

1. Northern Lights is a black hole for restaurants. The only successful one that's been there is Geangelo's, and I believe they've lost a lot since changing owners a couple of years ago. Valentino's was also great under it's old ownership. But just look at the list of failed restaurants in that area.

2. I enjoyed the food, but no way in hell was it worth the price. You shouldn't be paying an arm and a leg for a burger joint. (Granted, I went twice the first few months it was opened and haven't been back since.)

How do you have a bad experience at Hickory Park? You show up, order food, it comes 5 minutes later and then you leave.

Every time I have gone has been a minimum 20 minute wait for a table, 20 minutes to actually get a waitress to place an order, then 20-40 minutes for food by which time everything that was ordered is cold. I have gone 5 different times at different times and on different days and always the same experience. Granted I haven't tried in like 3 years so maybe its better now but I will stick with all the des moines bbq joints.

The wait I could see depending on when you go and what's happening in town. Any kind of event instantly makes Hickory Park busy, but they also have like a million tables. But 20-40 minutes for food? At Hickory Park? I can't see that being true. Top 3 criteria of how to choose restaurants to go to is can we get in and out before the 1 year old starts to get bored and I don't think Hickory Park has ever failed us on that.

Like I said, I haven't tried to go back in 3 years. If I actually got warm food I wouldn't care about the wait.

That far North Ames location is terrible.

I'd have to imagine competing with Brick City on the north end of town was tough.

Agreed. Not a great location and not as good of burgers as Brick City. Also if I remember correctly it was fairly pricey

hickory park lives off cheap prices and hype, but mostly hype. its basically only sit down non-chain place on duff besides dublin bay which is way better. their bbq is so overated. burgers are alright but not as good as dublin or bbops even
