So long, Oddfellows

I love Oddfellows. My whole family enjoyed it every time we went which was several times. Always good food and the kids like playing "I Spy" with the decor.

I loved loved loved Oddfellows. The music was always great, the atmosphere was pretty much perfect, and the burgers, while not top-of-the-line amazing, were pretty good. The best, though, was their fried pickles, which were pretty much the best in town (though that's not saying much...)

Really sad to see it go, and glad that the owner's got other stuff lined up. The band he sings/plays in is really great, and I'd hate to see it break up.

I was just describing my experience, which I said multiple times was over 3 years ago. I don't hate on something unless I have experienced it first hand. I can understand that other people enjoy it and have good experiences there, but I think there are better restaurants in Ames, big friggin deal.

That is Ribs thing, attack people who don't like Ames things or he disagrees with. Don't take it personal.

Also, Hickory Park food isn't very good and neither is the atmosphere.

Also, also, restaurants in Iowa need to figure out how to make a quality french fry.

LOL

Ok tough guy.

Never understood the whole odd-fellows thing. We went there right after it opened, didn't really care for it, and thought the prices/service/food was a little lacking. Gave it another try after being open for a while hoping it had gotten better. No such luck. I find the atmosphere a little distracting(not in a good way) the service was ok, but nothing to write home about, and the food was mediocre at best. Both times my burgers were just too greasy and I thought the buns had a very strange taste.

As for hickory park..... while there typical BBQ type items are not the best around, there chicken is usually pretty good! I almost always order the half chicken(dark) and it is consistently good. The draw is the price, the service, the drinks, and the desert! I can't say as though the atmosphere is always a draw for me, as some times it is just too loud in there. One real positive is that my baby is dairy/soy sensitive, and my wife has to watch what she eats while nursing. They are very accommodating and knowledgeable about catering to special dietary needs. They have a huge binder with every item on the menu and it's full list of ingredients. They have a ton of non dairy/non soy options. Most of the other restaurants in town have no idea when we ask them if their items contain soy/dairy.... and it's required by law.

Edit: Battles was just never the same after the original owner passed and his family inherited it. I loved (the smell) walking by that tiny shop they had every day on my way to class. It really went down hill after the family sold it. I think it is a great fit for campus town but won't last 6 months in north ames.
