Sinead Oconnor has passed

Not to make light of her passing, but when I hear her name, I think of the SNL skit with someone pretending to be Frank Sinatra (I think), and he called her “Sine-aid” O’Conner!

I was surprised how old she was, remember her but then kind of forgot about her.

One of my co-workers back in 1988-89 was a pretty big Sinead fan and would talk her up in conversation … this was well before Nothing Compares 2 U and few people knew anything about her. Then I saw her perform Mandinka at the 1989 Grammys on TV - wow. Powerhouse song and powerhouse performance. Sure, I guess she was a one-hit wonder but she recorded some good songs. I hope she’s found peace.

Sad she lost her life but the reality she had a hit with a cover song and made a stink on SNL tearing up a picture of the pope. Other than that she has done nothing in the last 30 years. She was a one hit wonder singing a Prince song.

She had several albums after that and contributed to other artists' stuff.

You don't have to be a chart topper to be doing something.

she was brilliant, wrote many songs herself. For example check out Black Boys on Mopeds. There are a lot of great bands and artist that were not multiple chart toppers but that does not make them any less brilliant, creative, critically acclaimed, trail Blazers, etc...Bands like the Cocteau Twins, who never had a hit, but pretty much were the start of the shoe gaze/dream pop genre, or how about Husker Du out of Minneapolis? Never had a hit, but without them there would not be Nirvana or countless other bands that tout them as a main influence.

Until yesterday I don’t think I had known that ripping up the pope picture was specifically in response to the sex abuse. I was young when that happened and while I knew it had happened, I didn’t know much about it.

She did something incredibly brave and spoke truth before most people were ready to believe it.

The older I get the more respect I have got those that stand up for what’s right. (And also she tore up a picture, she didn’t assault him for gods sake.)

Umm... Let's see: she sold around 6.5 million albums; "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" went Platinum almost 5 times (5MM copies sold); and "The Lion and The Cobra" went Gold selling around 750k copies. Both critically and commercially successful.

And that in your opinion's a one hit wonder who did nothing else but tear up a pic on SNL over the course of 30+ years in music?

And I should also mention she had an incredible voice and range.

At the time she did it, almost 70,000 kids had been abused. And the abuse covered up. And it would be awhile yet before it was addressed. Like you, I was young and I didn't really understand it at the time. But now... she was very right and very brave and sacrificed so much in that act.

The best source I've heard is the Behind the Bastards episode titled, "How the Catholic Church Murdered Ireland's Babies." It's staggering and heartbreaking. Here's a place to start learning about what she was trying to call attention to.

Vanilla Ice sold over 8 million with the album to the Extreme and over 500k with extremely live. He’s still a one hit wonder.

I should also mention he is a damn good dancer and his raps were not bad. Yet if he died I would not try and pretend he was something he wasn’t.

SAD. I don't know cause of death so not sure if related. I have to find it, but saw her on video several years ago that she was living in a Hotel in Jersey with suicidal thoughts fighting for her life. Mental illness in the world is getting worse.

Vanilla Ice? Seriously, that's your comparison? We could talk all day about crappy artists who sold millions of albums. And he's definitely one of them.

Ripping off a sample of "Under Pressure" without permission isn't the same as covering a song (with permission) and putting your own stamp on it where it very well might surpass the original. Which is what Sinead did with the Prince song, "Nothing Compares 2 U".

She also had many other songs that charted highly as well. "The Emperor's New Clothes" hit #1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart as did "Nothing Compares 2 U".

She wasn't a mainstream pop/rock artist either. She was in the "Alternative" genre with her early work getting play mostly on college radio and alternative rock stations.

And again, she had a lot of critical acclaim, and deservedly so.
