That and maybe have a system where Cyclone fans everywhere hear about the trolls that get after players and then troll them mercilessly.
Good article, and I agree that people need to not be so hard on players. I mean I think there's some things you can be hard about (i.e. boxing out), but tweeting players directly and telling them they suck, etc etc is ridiculous. It's one thing if you're from an opposing team's fan base, but our own? That's just dumb. I know these guys think the world of us fans, so when one of us gives them **** to their face, what exactly do these people think?
It's too bad we have ***-hole fans going after players on Twitter and all of that but if players want to be on Twitter and enjoy the adoration posts they are going to have to live with the other ones. Just the way it is. You all can post that bad things should happen to the bad fans but that isn't going to change a thing. The only way to change it is to become TT where no one cares. The more success we have the more the dicks will be part of the fan base.
Crying about this is like our WBB fans constantly crying that the game has turned too rough and not compatible with our style. Maybe true but no no use just ******** about it. It is the way the game is currently trending. Adapt or not but wishing everything to change is silly.

I think our fanbase is probably a bit worse than others. There is a sense of urgency and desperation in our fanbase because we see any success as fleeting...with good reason. It's easy for blue bloods to take disappointment in stride because there is always a new batch of McDonalds All-Americans and next year to look forward to. With ISU fans, we can never feel comfortable. even with Fred and the potential for years of success, it feels like it could crumble at any time if he decides to move on to the NBA. We had unprecedented success in basketball for two years, which was followed by controversy and a decade of mostly terrible basketball. Football is...well...it's been ISU football. A major upset here or there, and just wide right of accomplishing some great things at times, but mostly terrible. You can hardly blame us if we are a little bat **** crazy.

I guess to each his own. I have FB and BB season tickets because I ENJOY watching my cyclones play ball. For me it is entertainment and not an investment. I don't feel the teams owe me anything, I feel I owe them the support of cheering them on win or lose. They work their butts off year round to entertain me for a couple hours at a time for a couple months of the year. I don't expect them to do anything, but I want them to see them succeed. When things like yesterday happen I don't get mad, I feel bad for the players and coaches because of how much they put into their passion.
Sat by two of them at the big 12 tournament. Sure, things weren't going well in the first half of those games, but these guys were bagging on the players and Fred. Made me wonder why they even came to the games. Can only imagine that while they're not happy today either, they're probably going around running their mouth as if to say they told you so. Part of me didn't think they even deserved to see the 3 big comeback wins.
This article didn't tell me a thing I didn't already know. And...every team should be talking about a goal of winning the NT. If you aren't then why bother suiting up? I'd much rather have our guys with a mindset of NC game or bust. Any day.
So.... Expectations were high. Why.... Big 12 media day. Terms thrown around "best team ever, most talented team, more expectations". How does that not get a hungry fan base even more hungry.
To the fans that go off on players, they should be publicly shamed for hiding behind social media. Including people on this site. Grow up and get a life. If you feel cheated for this season then please by all means give up your tickets and let real fans have them. The players don't owe you a damn thing except their effort.

Sorry, nobody gives a **** that you spent $1000 on ISU basketball. First of all, that's not very much. Moot point. Although, if you looked at it objectively you definitely got your money's worth. 2 top 10 finishes the last 2 years. Been ranked in the top 25 since 2013. First time under hoiberg that we lost in the first round of the tourney.
As a whole, Cyclone fans are some of the best there are. See: Big 12 tourney this year.
People that generalize about the Cyclone fan base annoy the **** out of me. I think the coaches and the team should have a lot more to worry about than a few ***hole fans.
Interesting perspective. I NEVER am mad at our players or coaches. I save all that for the the other team, the other coach, the officials, the media (that is not ours), anyone in the world that is not rooting for the Cyclones. (But really mostly the officials.)

Yes, I agree. That has a lot to do with it. We have a nice, but short little window here, so it would be great if we could capitalize on it. I would remember a Final Four for the rest of my life. I realize that we can't expect that type of thing with regularity at ISU.
I realize that competing in FB is pretty much impossible at this point.
We finally have our golden boy MBB coach, who is highly successful, but also loves ISU. He would never leave us for any other program.
But he also happens to be a hot commodity in the NBA, and has a serious heart condition.
So we simply can't count on this thing lasting two decades. There is a chance that it does, and maybe he'll be our Coach K and build a program that can withstand time.
The future is unknowable, so we are desperate to capitalize on our window.
A bit worse than others. Ha. Those same fans travel in droves to bowl games and big 12 tourney. Those fans make Hilton one of the toughest places to play in for opponents. Should Cyclone fans give less of a **** about the team? I'd rather our fans be too passionate vs the alternative.

Some of it could be opposing team trolls. I say that because Monte has mentioned it publicly a couple times, and while his stats may not always be flashy, I can't remember him ever having what I would consider a bad game. If people are on him, no other player in the country is safe.
Agreed. I recall the trip to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl (supporting a 6-6 football team); we're walking behind an older Tulsa supporter, who turns to his wife and says, "Iowa State has more fans on Beale Street right now than we have students."
I can't think of another university athletic program in the country, mirroring our lack of general success in a historic context, which enjoys the level of support ISU fans provide. To criticize our fan base, even the small vocal negative minority, is nothing short of ludicrous...
They're probably in Seattle right now in their Jake Christensen jerseys. One of the worst things for me is the bandwagon aspect. It's inevitable I see now but I thought maybe ISU would be different. The last thing I want is a bunch of tavernclones. I don't care how much money they spend, we've always survived by being a family, not a cult.
