You get points for loyalty. I guess I still watched during the McDoormat years but it wasn't fun. You guys have had 2 terrible coaches in a row. At what point does it become totally hopeless and you just find a new hobby?

In my lifetime Iowa has had:

Lute Olson-Phenomenal coach, but I was too young to really appreciate it.
George Raveling- Great recruiter, so-so coach.
Dr. Tom Davis - Great coach, so-so recruiter.
Steve Alford - At the time we had him, so-so coach, Ok recruiter.
Todd Lickliter- Terrible coach and just plain awful recruiter.
Fran McCaffery- Ok coach and recruiter. Has done a good job overall cleaning up the mess he was left with. Just not sure how much further he can take us.

Is "so-so" better or worse than "ok"?

Pretty fair assessment if ok means below average.

It would not surprise me to see Iowa favored and winning next year - even with the game in Hilton. As a team, all the players buy into the role and Fran gets them to execute; which imo, was how the surprisingly beat us this year (probably going down as the worst loss in Prohm's career to date). If it was a game of 1-on-1, or Horse, we look better on paper, but they will have better experience returning.
It also blows my mind how Fran consistently gets one of his players in the top 1-5 of the league in scoring (Gatens, White, Marble, Jok, etc), but I don't see who's gonna be the go-2-guy next year. They also add a solid recruit in Wiescamp (sp?) and I think Fran's kid will be solid in his Junior / Sr year. I just hope Prohm has our offensive strategy in place early next year, because I thought hurt us bad in the Nov & Dec games this year.

You are giving them way too much credit. They have terrible guards and will get destroyed next year inHilton. After Jok is gone, Iowa has very little talent.

What about if you grew up being an Iowa fan? Like your family has been Iowa fans since who know when so you were just born into being an Iowa fan. Is that a tavernhok?

I'm sure, actually I know, there are Iowa State fans who are Clones fans, who never attended Iowa State. Does that make them tavernclones?

Plus, I've never understood why just because you didn't attend a University you can't root for them? Having more fans of your team is a good thing, right? I mean, I doubt Michigan, or Texas, or the Cowboys, or the Cubs are like, man we got to get rid of all these fans we have....

The initial answer focused way too much on those that didn't go to the school.
Tavernhawk is the guy in an Iowa hat on sitting two rows in front of you on an American Airlines flight who sees you're wearing a Cyclone had and insists on saying "Go Hoks."
Tavernhawk is the family of 8 all wearing the same Hawkeye gear walking around Las Vegas and insists on saying "Go Hoks" when they see ANY other college sports gear.
Tavernhawk is the guy who wont STFU about Dan Gable and Hayden Frye in a small town bar in Grand Mound, Iowa.
Tavernhawk is the grown *** man who insists on buying tickets to Iowa State games and wearing Iowa gear.
Tavernhawk is the "Hawkeyes on my Belly" guy and every Physical Education teacher in Iowa with that stupid Tigerhawk on their ankle like some girl with a butterfly tattoo.

Does Tavernhawk have an element of not going to the school? Yes. Is that the only way to be a Tavernhawk? No. Being and Iowa fan doesn't make you a tavernhawk. Being an embarrassment does.

Tavernhawk is THAT fan who rightfully should embarrass the fan base due to their cult like following of a thing. A fan base should not strive to have these people define the success of their program.

So every school has Tavern fans is what you are saying....There are D-Bags in every fanbase. I've seen many ******** at Iowa ISU games wearing Iowa and ISU colors. The team they root for doesn't make them a douchebag, it's their actions.

This pretty much. I always laugh when people say blah blah blah team's fans suck. Guess what, every fan base is basically the same. Even more so when we are all Iowans for the most part.

Nah, Tavernhawk was started and basically means being an Iowa fan with no ties to the actual school, oh which every fan base has.

I agree to an extent. There are also geographical and cultural influences at play. Nebraska's fans are still super arrogant from the '90s. I think Iowa State's fans are more humble than Iowa's, because we've had less success over the years. I think it all plays a part.

I can agree, but say Iowa had the same level of success as Nebraska, they would act the same way. We are all sports fans and we all act pretty much the same way in accordance with the amount of success our teams have had.

I'm mad as hell that Iowa hasn't won a wrestling title in five years, but most other schools would be ecstatic to even have one individual champion every couple of years.

It started that way, then some people finally realized how stupid that was so they shifted the meaning a few years ago. You still catch people use the original pretty frequently on here like they never got the memo. Think someone tried to do it last week or so.

I still associate it with people who didn't go to Iowa but follow the sports to the point where it is almost unhealthy. I agree the joke being because they didn't go to the school, but are fans, is dumb. But whenever I met a person who is willing to fistfight me because I am an Iowa state fan, while he didn't go to the Iowa, I think "tavernhok". Now, if someone were to say they were an Iowa fan, because they were born in Iowa, but went to Missouri for broadcast journalism, I would never think Tavernhok. Does that differentiation make sense? That is at least my thought process. I am sure lots of other fanbases have a name for that type of person, but most probably just call them douchebags

Tavernhok is as much about education level and geography as it is about anything else. When I think tavernhok I think, "Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids" and Burlington.
