Seemingly never ending Iowa MBB thread (still going.....)

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

This would be true if that wasn't MSU's 3rd straight loss to Nebraska. They lost at home last year and then went to the final four. Nebraska has go their number lately but it hasn't stopped MSU from being one of the best teams in the country. Lololol.

Nebraska is worse than any team in the Big 12

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

Three days after MSU lost at home to Nebraska, they beat the current #2 team in the country, Maryland.

The Nebraska game happened, and counts, but so does Maryland. MSU is currently ranked #8/#9, its ridiculous to dismiss those games as if they never happened.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

They are comparable to TCU. Better record but weaker SOS.

TCU is the worst team in the Big 12 and they have a higher RPI than Nebraska. So yeah, Michigan State lost at home to a team that's worse than any Big 12 team.

TCU is two spots higher than NE in RPI because their SOS is 100 pts higher. NE lost to Cinci by 4 on a neutral court and lost to Miami (FL) by 6. They are capable of being a good team they just had a bad start to the season. They've got a couple of really good players in White (KU xfer) and Shields.

So by this logic since Iowa State lost to UNI for the 4th time out of the last 5 match ups, does that mean that we just discount that loss since UNI just seems to "have our number"? Seems like that loss keeps getting thrown in our face from Iowa fans as a bad loss.

Yes, TCU is the worst team in the Big 12 and they are still better than Nebraska

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

Would love to see Texas as an 8 or 9 seed, in the Iowa bracket. When that team gets Ridley back they are gonna be a load to handle. Would be a fun game to watch.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

Agree with this for the most part. When Iowa beat MSU, Sparty was Top 10 in RPI. They slid to mid-20s with losses to Nebraska and Wisconsin, and are now back at 16. If they beat Purdue tonight in WL, good chance Sparty is back in Top 10.

RPI also really likes road wins, so winning @MSU and @Purdue are big. And even wins over so-so road teams (like Illinois and Marquette) helps Iowa. Picking nits, but Lundardi has MSU as a 3 seed and Purdue as a 5 seed this week. I wouldn't be shocked to see Sparty on the 2 line before it's all over, but that's projecting, not the now.

Good post, glad to see some discussion other than the latest CyTwins vs. (Hawkeye) troll battle in this thread. Not that I don't enjoy CyTwins in moderation. For what it's worth I do think MSU is better than a 5 seed but I was going off of straight RPI for my last post. That number is the most important to the committee.

I don't really get the argument over who has better wins between Iowa and ISU anyway. I think it is pretty close and I would pick ISU, but it's not really a relevant question. The question that matters is who has the better resume. ISU definitely has worse losses by virtue of having two home losses compared to zero, a loss to #120 UNI when neither team has any other sub-30 losses, and 6 total losses compared to 4. ISU has certainly played the tougher schedule but hasn't taken care of business as well as Iowa. I think things could change quickly if Iowa added a bad loss, but they don't have one yet and so you have to give the nod to Iowa for the better resume so far. Good thing for Cyclone fans that 99% of what matters in college basketball happens in March & April.

Unless it was last year

The way they are playing I don't see them being an 8 or 9. They are a 5 in Lunardi's latest bracket and a loss at OK doesn't change that. I think they end up being a dangerous 4-6 seed. ISU hasn't played them at full strength either.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

I think Iowa will face a huge challenge despite playing in Des Moines in the round of 32. If they play a P5 team that is a 7/8/9/10 seed has been battled tested, that game could be scary. Today that could be teams like Baylor, Providence, LSU and Simmons, Texas A&M if they keep sliding.

You don't have much proof to support that. One common opponent is TN who TCU beat at home by 12. Nebraska beat them by 11 in New York. The other common opponent is Rhode Island. TCU lost in Cancun and NE won at home. RPI separates them by 2 spots today and SOS is a huge determining factor in that. NE has beat Rutgers twice which actually hurts their RPI. Their SOS will only go up from here.

TCU is ahead of Nebraska in the RPI. That seems like proof to me

Given how weak college basketball is at the top (#1 in KenPom would have been #7 last year and is the worst #1 since at least 2002), this year might have the best chance of all time at finally getting a 1 vs. 16 upset, since the 1 seeds would be more like 2 seeds in a normal year. I'm not sure Iowa media/Twitter/this website could handle 16-seed Hampton beating #1 Iowa in Des Moines.
