Schedule advantage before the game: UI or ISU?

Do you really see ISU switching defenses for 1 game?

That seems strange to me.

i think they have to only way we can stop the bruising running attack. iowa is the only power run team we play all year even though i suppose texas is the next closest and not surprising we struggle against texas. the bubble zone or whatever you want to call it usually doesnt even see the light of day till after the iowa game but we will probably see it against uni and dropped against iowa.

This bye week will not be a factor to anyone, unless of course someone of significance for the University of Iowa would get injured Week 2, then they would probably with they had had a bye. This is also a completely different scenario than last year, so there should not be any comparisons. We've known about this bye since the schedule was put out and nothing will come to us as a surprise.

A positive aspect of the bye would be that if anyone for us would get banged up in the first game, they would have a full two weeks to recover.

I would agree with this. Only way it is remotely impactful is if Iowa suffers a serious injury against Rutgers. I supposed it could be argued Iowa State will be "fresher" but so early in the season that seems not all that important.

i dont think our normal defense works against that patient zone blocking scheme of iowa. as soon as the linebackers start flowing toward the action to help shut it down we get crushed on play action. iowa is a horrible match up for iowa state but iowa seems to have no problem shutting us down. bad matchup all around for iowa state but having a bye week before will help.

if hawkeyes actually watched iowa state games they would have realized the isu defense has done a 180 scheme wise for the big 12 season every year compared to the iowa game. danny mac defense was the same all year long and same with pauly rhoads. but campbell stew put in the bubble zone for big 12 play which doesnt seem to work against the hawkeyes because they will sit there and take the 4 yard gains all day long and no one in the big 12 will cept texas.

then as soon as isu gets uncomfortable with the iowa grind it out the linebackers sneak up and bam play action knife to the gut. which means isu has to play a different scheme against iowa that is not usable against any other team in the big 12 cept maybe texas and maybe a bowl game but even last year wsu game was a great matchup for isu even though we lost but we would have stuggled more against a big 10 or sec team.

Get two weeks of film on Iowa, while only having to produce one week of vanilla game-planning for UNI? All while getting healthy and having an extra week to prepare?

Seems like a clear advantage for the good guys.

I thought I just listened to an interview with Campbell and he said he prefers this setup with the early bye and it's how they would always setup the scheduling at mount union? I could be wrong here, but swear he said something to that affect.
I went and checked mount union's schedule. They play 09/07 then not again to 09/21. THe coach that is starting his 7th year has been a part of the Mt. Union program since birth(his dad was the head coach and now the AD). The dude is starting his 7th season as head coach and his record is 84-5. That has him as the coach with the best record in the country during this time period(per his bio).

It would be just our luck that Fat Stanley would go down week 2

I like Iowa states chances if we decide to punt further than 20 yds this year. Did that happen 2-3 times that game deep in our own territory?

I think it had more to do with our offensive line not being able to hold their blocks and give Kempt any time to throw. Offensive scheme wasn't there either. We only gave up 13 points and 7 of them came in the last 5 minutes of the game. The punting was terrible but really didn't cost us the game.

In the 2017 game against Iowa, we played outstanding football on the offensive side of the ball, however struggled on the defensive side. Joel Lanning was playing his first true test as the MLB and he got exposed quite a bit. This was all before we switched our defensive scheme, which happened in the Texas game, in which Joel had around 20 tackles.

Last year, our defense played outstanding football, however our offense had a ton of issues. Some of those issues coming from Iowa having a good defense, and some of those issues could have stemmed from it being Coach Campbell's first true game as the OC. Our offensive line sure did not help, as it put our offense constantly in 3rd down and long distances.

With Tom Manning back calling plays as the OC, and our defense having played in this system for a while, I see a lot less confusion on both sides of the ball. Brock Purdy is also an x-factor in this game in my opinion. Iowa has struggled when facing a QB that can do everything.
This is simply not true. He was Offensive Coordinator prior to becoming a head coach.

Yeah I would not want to play Iowa without Stanley. He's beaten us twice and I want to beat the Hawks with him behind the center.

Their backup QB was an Oregon State decommit they got late so I'm assuming he's not very talented but still he's probably at least a top 50 QB in the country

I did not mean he's never been an OC I meant it was his first time running things as the OC for Iowa State.
That is what you meant in spite of the text below?

Had I put it was Campbells first true game as an OC, then I would be wrong. It was Campbell's first true game as the OC.

I think you're reaching.

Could be. But for whatever reason when I hear that from our fans it drives me bonkers. It is almost as bad as a sports commentator says "they are within three..." when the reality is they are down by three not within three. I also hate it when people chew loud.

So I have those things going for me :)
