Royce White headed to D-league??

darren rovell@darrenrovell ESPN Sports Business Reporter & Business Correspondent, ABC News
For those bashing Royce White tonight, do yourself a favor. Look up generalized anxiety disorder. Educate yourself before you troll.

Glad RW has a high profile advocate, for whatever it's worth. But most of us here are educated about his situation and are still very concerned about his actions, words, and apparent behavior the last couple of months. As much as we all want to see him succeed and would hope/expect a team could make reasonable accommodations for him, I don't think many of us would endorse the way he's conducted himself lately, with the defiant tone on Twitter and the public statements shaming the Rockets for not doing enough.

Not to bring up the inevitable - but at a certain point, wouldn't skipping practices and games be breech of contract?

I predict (sadly) that in about 9 months no one outside this forum remembers the name Royce White.

He just tweeted: "I informed the #Rockets of every practice I was going to miss. There were no unexplained misses."

And I'm thinking, hey that's super that they knew. But there's still the issue of, you know, MISSING PRACTICE.

I should really unfollow him because it feels like the proverbial watching a car accident in slow motion.

I know that we aren't privy to this answer, but can he document that notification?
The Rockets are playing this right. They either get a player, or they get their ducks lined up in a row. Stating that they support Royce can be both genuinely supportive as well as preparing their own defense for the endgame.

Enough is enough. I love Royce, but if I was Rockets' management, I would send his *** down to the D-League and leave him there until his contract was up. This is Terrell Owens-level ****.

This wreaks of a kid getting some very bad advice from someone. It's time to play Royce, he's a great player but not good enough that any team is going to put up with this. He needs to turn this around now or his career is over, breaks my heart to see this happen. At some point you got to shut up and play, and if u can't play because of the anxiety then it's time to do something else. But he isn't even giving it a shot, you just cant show up and not be in shape, what the hell does he want?

His publicist, for one, sure the hell isn't doing him any favors. I can't imagine any competent spokesperson thinking that it's a solid PR strategy to publicly blast your employer in a written statement like this.

We all know Royce isn't a diva, because we all know of personal stories about him stopping for pics with people's children, shaking hands, etc. Royce knew he had our support, and he reacted in kind.

NBA fans don't have that quasi-personal relationship with him. They don't know who he is or care what he does after a game - they want him to perform. They just don't care about his platform - not yet, anyway, and he isn't endearing himself to them.

He is hurting his own cause, both literally and figuratively. He is hurting his career, but he is also making it look like anxiety sufferers are high-maintenance prima donnas - and he is anything but that. I do NOT advocate for him hurtin his health, but he also has to make some concessions.

MAI adore Royce, I hope this works out.

This is a bad thought that I wish I didn't have through this whole deal but what if Royce was putting on a show. The guy is intelligent. What if he just did everything he did here to get into the good graces of everyone?

I realize he has anxiety ( I have a low level as well) but I find it hard to believe that a guy who steps onto a basketball court in front of thousands upon thousands of people and functions can't participate in practice. I always had trouble with him using his disorder as an excuse for his past transgressions as well. I always hear it can "paralyze" you but some of these things just don't add up for me.

I was a big fan of Royce while he was here but his actions, mostly how he has handled this from a media aspect are very disappointing. Using this as a crutch is unacceptable. Yeah, he can say they knew he was missing practice but that doesn't excuse it. I can call my boss and tell them I'm not coming in but that doesn't mean that's just OK.

It is pretty clear he enjoys being very outspoken about his issues more than having anything to do with the NBA. I can't see him ever playing unless it is way down the road and his contract is voided meaning he has to have some way to provide for his family.

Another thing we should all keep in mind is that Royce is only 21; a lot of us might think that he's exercised some poor judgment with the way he's handled this, but I sincerely doubt that any one of us would be able to handle a PR **** storm of this magnitude at that young age. I certainly know I wouldn't.

Good point about practice. He keeps tweeting about the travel not being the issue so I wonder where the anxiety is coming from.
Anybody else get the feeling the dude just doesn't like basketball?

True. At the same time, I don't think most of us would cause a PR storm of this magnitude at that young age. For better or worse, most of us would probably be pretty quiet and get things done.

"I do know the Rockets have set up mental health appointments for Royce every single day since he's been here, and he hasn't been to one yet." - Matt Bullard

He's pretty much stated this on more than one occasion. Basketball is just an avenue (however short or long) to what he want's to do in life. It's currently serving as an avenue to publicity (his name is still trending on twitter a few hours later) and provides the money to do other things assuming he saves/invests correctly even if he's out of the league quickly.

As Tre4ISU said, Royce is highly intelligent and to a certain extent this appears, on the surface, as highly calculated toward some end game. That may or may not involve basketball.

Well he has said he didn't love the game and has implied he liked that it gave him a medium for other endeavors. I've never felt he was baout the game.

If I had somebody close to me with anxiety disorder - I wouldn't want them looking to this some sort of awareness campaign or model.

I would believe at some point accountability and responsibility are necessary for progression. I think no matter what the Rockets have done already or would have done - wouldn't have been enough for Royce. It's easier for me to blame someone else for not properly embracing or assisting with my anxiety compared to me actually being accountable for my lack of control over the disease.
