Rhoads> Ferentz???

I'm guessing not having any good WRs and not preparing for teams to blitz isn't KFs fault?

Ferentz prepares his teams like he is the opposing coach. He could never imagine a scenario where an opposing team would be aggresive which is why Iowa is always so unprepared for fake punts, onside kicks, blitzes, etc.

they had good wide receivers, they just didn't have a great wide receiver. You can prepare all day long for blitzes but that preparation doesn't mean a thing if the quarterback can't handle it.

Ferentz isn't blameless. He's the one who recruited JVB. He also recruited Stanzi....and Christiansen...and Tate...and Banks..etc. There's a reason why quarterback is a hard position to scout. Generally you can tie a coaches success with how well he recruits two positions: qb and d-line. They're the two hardest positions in football to recruit yet it's really hard to win games without having good ones either.

So during the 2005-present time frame KF has had an NFL QB in Stanzi, a very solid college QB in Tate and produced more NFL D-lineman than just about any program in the country and still only managed to go .500 in the B10 play. Doesn't speak highly of his coaching skills.

Can't really argue against what CyJack said...I know you said Ferentz isn't blameless but who else is their to blame besides him?

How else do you explain a coach going .500 over the last 3 years with an easy schedule?

He hasn't had the horses. Nick Saban runs a pro style offense. Ferentz runs a pro style offense. The difference between the two is the quality of players running those schemes. Now, I'm on board with anyone who wants to say Saban has the critical killer instinct that Ferentz lacks. But that's not something new. Ferentz has always been conservative like that, yet he won before.

There are some minor changes I would make defensively, with the spread taking tighter hold of college football. More nickel packages and press coverage would be a suitable adjustment, IMO. And those are things they reportedly ran more of during the practice on Saturday.

So he runs an offense he doesn't have the horses for? I don't think anyone is saying he has to be like Nick Saban or is comparing the two. Did ISU, Central Michigan, Penn State, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan and Nebraska all have these "horses" last year that Iowa didn't?

Since you think Melsahn Basabe has improved since his freshman season at Iowa, I can only assume you know just as much about football as you do about basketball...

did you just call Stanzi an nfl quarterback? He was a good college quarterback but come on now.

Also, you act like going .500 in conference over that long of a stretch is a bad thing. I suppose it's not a great thing but if that's the sign of a bad coach I've got some bad news for you.

He didn't say he was a starter, and he has been in the NFL for what, 3 years now? Next year will be the 3rd. You don't have to start to be in the NFL.

When half the fan base expects a national championship every year it's probably not good...also when you go from winning consistently to the last 3 seasons Iowa has had you're only lying to yourself if that doesn't throw up some sign of concern for your head coach and his abilities. Nobody to blame but KF

oh yes technically he's correct but it's intentionally used to make him seem better than what he is. In fact, I believe Tate was the better college quarterback of the two.

That's what you are missing. You're confusing my belief that Ferentz is just a good a coach now as he was in 2004 with me thinking Iowa wouldn't be better off with another good coach at the helm. I believe it's time Iowa and KF parted ways. That's not because he's suddenly become a bad football coach but even good football coaches require a change of scenery. It's pretty rare to find a coach who was consistantly good at a program for more than a decade.

Well no wonder KF has struggled at times, in the last decade he only had a QB who finished second in the heisman, a QB who got drafted and still plays in the NFL, a QB that you say was better than that NFL QB, and another QB who threw for 3,000+ yds and 25 TDs as a junior. Just think if he would have had some talent back there he'd pry have his own statue in IC

So why are you sitting here defending a coach that you don't even want at Iowa anymore?

A) Banks had a season where Iowa finished 8th in the polls, Tate had a season where Iowa finished 8th in the polls, and Stanzi had a season where Iowa finished 7th. Again, when he's had good quarterbacks and good defensive lines his teams have almost always been very good. The one outlier was 2010.

B) he probably will be comemorated at Kinnick in some way in the future.

because I believe he's a good football coach when you said he wasn't. If he wants another college job I think he'd be a very good choice for someone.

and JVB had one of the better seasons in Iowa history as a QB and got invited to the NFL combine...

That's like breaking up with a chick then trying to set her up with your friend because you think she's a good girl...

I still cannot believe $4 million a year, for coaching in Iowa. That is remarkable.

i agree. On the one hand, I love the fact that Iowa is willing to pay that much money for a coach. On the other, it really makes it hard to earn your pay when you make more than just a few coaches.

give me a break. I've watched every one of his games I'm pretty sure I've seen enough of his snaps to know if he was a good quarterback or not.

no, that's like breaking up with a chick and being happy that she found someone else later.
