Rhoads and Recruiting

So, if we pay Rhoads $500K more per year, we'll suddenly be competitive both in recruiting and on the field? It's just that easy....right? Right?! I mean, he'll try harder if he's making $2.2 million rather than the paltry $1.7 million he's getting....I'm sure of it.

No. But when you pay at the bottom, what do you tend to get? (By the way, another $500k still puts him at the bottom)

Where do you think our assistant pay ranks? I honestly have no idea but if our head coach is $500k behind 9th place, I would imagine the rest of our staff is behind. What kind of assistants does that get us? Maybe we are finding out?

We could double the salary and it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference. I think most of us believe Rhoads is the right guy for the job....paying him an ***-load more won't change anything. If we were to can him, we could put feelers out offering to pay $4 million a year and it still likely wouldn't matter.

Tech is paying a guy who had no head coaching experience at all $2.2 million. Do you think we could have gotten him here for that price? Do you think it would have mattered to any potential recruits? The fact is that we are the remote outpost of the Big 12. We're the last resort for athletes that the other programs aren't interested in.

Don't disagree. Money only came into this when someone said like "for all the money we are paying him." I was just pointing out that, in comparison to our conference brothers, it isn't that much.

It is always going to be an uphill struggle here. A bowl trip here is the equivalent of a 10 win season at Oklahoma or Texas.

Current salaries: (as far as I can find)
Mack Brown $5.4 million
Bob Stoops $4.6 million
Gary Patterson $3.5 million
Mike Gundy $3.3 million
Charlie Weis $2.5 million
Dana Holgorsen $2.4 million
Art Briles $2.3 million
Kliff Kingsbury $2.3 million
Bill Snyder $2.2 million
Paul Rhoads $1.7 million

So you want to pay $500k less than every other coach in the conference but expect better results? Actually, I think we are getting a good return on our investment. Pay is 10th by far but finished 9th/10 last year, 8th/10 in 2011, and 9th/12 in 2010.

What is all the complaining about? Want better results? Then maybe we should pony up. Because he is way behind an old man who could get paid way more if he wanted and some newby who hasn't finished his first season. Not exactly something to brag about.
So if we paid him more he would have beaten UNI? Good to know that money will get us better results.

OK then. Quite honestly, I'd be really PO'd if we were paying him any more than we are right now, because it wouldn't matter in the least. If he were getting paid Bob Stoops kind of money, we'd still be getting Iowa State-ish results.

This whole thread has me SMH. Y'all are depressing. I've been living with seasons like this for over 25 years and I enjoy every single win like it's the flippin' super bowl. That is the way it is, that is the way it has always been. If/when we breach the surface and have a "season of all seasons", I'll be there. It's only a matter of time folks, be patient. A storms coming!

I've only been a Cyclone fan for 11 years so I haven't been through a lot of bad times but some of you act like you're entitled to 8 wins since a coach gave you 6. Eat a ****.
Is it wrong to think we shouldn't be completely outclassed, coached, and prepped by the instate FCS school? I guess I am entitled to think that we should woodshed a team like that.

And to end this thread, Rhoads gets more out of 2 stars than Mack Brown does with 5 stars.

Football tends to be a haves and have nots sports. If you're not a traditional power in this sport, it's virtually impossible to break through to a higher level. I would say that our losing history plays a pretty large role.

But if the OPs approach is just that it's hard for us to recruit, and we essentially shouldn't try, then this is a poor excuse thread.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been addressed yet, but I had to stop here and put my two cents worth in. The OP's point is blatantly and unmistakably shedding light on how difficult it is to get top notch recruits to ISU. He further explains why this is so. It's not rocket science and anyone with half a brain who is looking at the situation should be able to not only comprehend the OP's argument, but see why this is so with their own two eyes. I've gotta ask, where the hell does the OP say anything about how we shouldn't try? HE'S JUST POINTING OUT THE UPHILL CLIMB ISU WILL ALWAYS HAVE IN REGARDS TO RECRUITING!!!

So, for the people who say we should be satisfied by our coaches and recruits because we are ISU. How much money does the UNI coaches make. They are in Iowa also. So with 15 to 20 less people they still out classed us. If the first years of Rhoads recruiting was bad and people dropped out maybe he should have seen this coming and went after some JC people and filled some holes. Also, I hear Blevins who left and we were counting on him is riding the bench at a small school?????

Stop posting stupid crap. 9 wins last year, 8 the year before, a 5 win season before that, and 13 wins and a national title appearance in 2009. There is only one"Rhoadsesque" season there. Guess which one it is?

Could Mack Brown do more? Sure. Is he doing less than Paul Rhoads? Look at the wins, and stop being dumb.

The mark of a TRUE fan! You can see through all the BS. You support YOUR team thru thick or thin. You don't enjoy the losses. You love the Ws. You're not complacent, but rather realistic...and you still have faith. You are among a rare breed in this day and age. Actually brought a smile to my face reading your post. Go Cyclones!

Come on, the players he brings in he can't even beat Kansas State over the last decade?

Man, the word "shouldn't" is gonna keep you going in circles like a dog chasing his tail. I read this quote once where a woman said, "When you argue with reality, you're gonna lose...but only 100% of the time."

You have every right to be upset. It happened...it SUCKED a big one! But, do you honestly think that quibbling on about the injustice of it all is gonna change things? It won't change the past and I pretty damn sure it won't have any effect on the future either. But, this is a public forum and you have every right to keep chasing your tail.

Who said satisfied? Just patient.

You are acting like this was the only time an FCS team beat an FBS. K-State is in year 87 of Bill Snyder's reign and coming off two strong seasons. And yet, they lost to an FCS team. It happens. I don't like it any more than you.

Michigan lost to an FCS team in 2007-ish and still finished in top 25. So that was a good team that got beat. Ours is a mediocre team.

It is only the third time Rhoads lost a game he was favored to win. So don't act like he is an under-achiever.

I don't think it's wrong to think that. I expected a woodshed beating and took the loss out on a piece of furniture, but I also know the difference between an expectation and entitlement.

Oh for Pete's sake. Tell me then who the **** wants to coach our football program that would do a better job?

I'm with you. We shouldn't ever lose to UNI. It just shouldn't happen. Farniok get's hurt, ok, we still shouldn't lose. Lich was not good at all, still shouldn't lose. The UNI game was an effing disaster and there isn't an excuse. There's no excuse for Miller starting. There's no excuse for really anything. The Iowa game was a little different for me and it took a couple days to really put it together in my head. If you tell me at the beginning of camp that we will be down 3 starting Olinemen and one of their backups and we lose to Iowa, I would have said "duh, I just hope it's somewhat of a game."

Yes we shouldn't lose to uni, but Michigan should never lose to Appalachian st. Either. Or the purple kitties to ndsu.
