Referees

WV plays very physically. That being said:

1) I have never seen a team get 3 fouls in less than 1 second, EVER, like we did tonight.

2) Whenever we got CLOSE to as physical as WV, we got called for a foul.

3) WV had some foul calls that I didn't think were fouls. Then they had some that I thought were fouls.

4) There were 2 or 3 missed out of bounds calls

Huggins has always dirtied the play up, it is how he teaches defense, he usually plays the same defense as Frank Martin or Mike Cronnin (Cincinnati)... It is the philosophy of "the referees can't call every foul". It is dirty, thug ball. I thought we did a decent job adapting to the officiating style, and Babb was bodying whoever he was defending... Then the officials saw the game getting out of hand (which they caused by calling it loose) and decided to tighten up a bit. And it just turned out poorly.
The only style I could pick up was that their calls were wildly inconsistent. That's tough to adapt to, but at least both teams had to deal with it.

One of my least favorite things in sports is this idea refs have that fouls are acceptable when a team has a "physical" reputation.
If it's a foul for one team, it's a foul for both. That's how things should be.

Absolutely. At very least, just call it even. If youre going to allow the 'physical' team a lot of leeway, you have to give it to the other team, and often they dont. There is zero way that our foul counts shouldve been close to even.

Also, there was some postgame footage released of one of the refs:

This is my issue with it, but also why it is a good strategy in any sport. Officials tend to keep the foul count close to even. Most games it should be, given most games have two teams trying to follow the same rules. Even if a team like WVU gets called for a decent amount more fouls, they still come out ahead- same principle as "if you are going to foul them, make it count". Better to be called for 21 fouls while continuously committing fouls that dictate the game than getting called for almost all of your fouls, many being inconsequential to the play.

One of Melvin's last two fouls, gets hand on the ball and the guy jerks his head and entire upper body in a standing flop like he knocked his block off. The Jordan-esque pushoff on their tying three was ridiculous. They push our guys off the court on rebounds and then we get four ticky tack fouls in about 10 seconds just to make the crappy ESPN announcers happy that they have a close game. And then the ref yucks it up with their players.

It all started at like 6:11 when we tried to track down a rebound, saved it in to WVU, WVU then proceeded to travel and pass it off for a 3. Then WVU had a massive flop to get the offensive on us. Then Niang was called for a foul while he was being pushed by #24. He did have his arm wrapped around #34 though but IMO it should have been a no call. Then Ejim gets called for something I can't explain...
That flop was so bad. Can't believe they rewarded him for that.

Watching replay now. If anything they called leg contact. Maybe a push from McGee.

Let me know if Lucious actually fouled on an inbounds play. And what Georges did on that inbounds play.
Lucious put his forearm onto Hinds (normal basketball) and Hinds threw his arms up and went down. Hinds did this for the rest of the game but never went down again. I didn't really see Niang do anything. Ejim's shouldn't have been called but i can see why. Had his leg behind the WV player and was sorta boxing him out with his arm. Looked kind of awkward.

They were bad.

In addition to all that you have mentioned, the over-and-back call we had was terrible. We weren't even in the front court yet. Total guess on that official's part.

BTW, I'm old and not cool so can someone tell me what EABOD means? If it's too naughty to post you can PM me.

Bad is bad is bad. Can the B12 get those refs some refresher training or some spectacles? Maybe the refs were showing off on TV.

This is a pretty radical idea but I'm almost wondering if they need to get them off the court so they can see better. Like put them in a volleyball nest over the basket or something.

Looked to me like it was a really old ref (past his prime) training two young refs (not ready for prime time). Lots of bad calls on both teams.

The consecutive dead ball fouls were amazing given WV's game plan to be physical. They wouldn't even let us hold position that we had established.

The most odd was the one with the WV guarding the line. In high school decades ago, we had to stay a few feet from the inbounder, but that was because we had walls and there was no room for him to step back. Seems like college players should be allowed to stand right next to the line to defend. Maybe this ref was trying to break into the Big 12, but was still relying on some "special small school rules."

OK, I've gotten several responses, which I greatly appreciate, but there is a discrepancy. Is it "eat a big ol'" or "eat a bag of"? I'd appreciate some clarification as I'd really like to start using this acronym at work today.

Thank you.

That's brilliant. It would also get them out of the way of play as I have seen refs mistakenly set picks in both basketball and football. Maybe some day...100 years from now.

Also would stop things like the refs at Kansas keeping their bad pass in bounds for them.
