Iowa State coaches are heading into the second weekend of the July evaluation period with one week remaining in the essential portion of the recruiting calendar.
With coach Steve Prohm and his three assistants spread across the country to find talent for the 2016 class and beyond, Iowa State is focused on finding talent to fill some of its six open scholarships for the 2016-17 season.
Here's a list of five prospects to keep an eye on moving forward.
[h=3]1. Jeriah Horne[/h]
[h=3]Analysis[/h]Horne is an undersized power forward who nevertheless succeeds on the basis of a high skill level, good bulk and the ability to face the basket. He also possesses good hands and a strong understanding of the game, plus he's an outstanding passer.
Horne burst onto the scene in June when he added Power 5 offers from Kansas State and Minnesota, and then he closed the month with an offer from Iowa State. After being recruiting to Loyola (Chicago) by new Iowa State assistant Daniyal Robinson, Horne is now being recruited to Ames by assistant T.J. Otzelberger.
The start of the July evaluation period has been kind to Horne, who has begun to blow up, adding offers from Nebraska and Rutgers. Horne, a Kansas City product, plans set his final four official visits (he took one to Pepperdine) in late June, make his visits in August and September and decide in late September or early October.
“Iowa State has been a really solid team through the past couple of years and whenever you look at basketball they’re always in that top-10 [range],” Horne told AllCyclones.com. “Being able to receive an offer from such a high-caliber team like that, that competes in such a tough conference, the Big 12, it means a lot."

A JUCO forward out of Oklahoma, Cook already held offers from Kansas State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Houston and Tulsa before Iowa State joined the mix in late June. Cook was drawing interest from a number of other southern schools and has blown up on the recruit circuit in July, especially at a top-100 JUCO event.
Last week, Cook added offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Nebraska and Memphis. Cook's recruitment could be altered slightly as he draws increasing interest, but when Iowa State offered in June, his plan was to use official visits to make stops at Arkansas, Iowa State, Kansas State and LSU with one visit to be determined. Time will tell if that holds true.
“With Iowa State coming in there, it’s amazing, because Iowa State is a good school, plus Prohm is a good coach and he’s running a good system. I’m really interested in Iowa State," Cook said. "Of course in the fall I’m going to take a visit.”

Before the departure of Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State made the top-6 list of Cook, a top Missouri prep, along with Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Missouri and Virginia. In the immediate aftermath of Hoiberg's departure, Cook told AllCyclones.com he wasn't sure where things stood or if he would consider the Cyclones. It appears Iowa State is at least in the mix still, but to what degree remains uncertain.
Cook has made multiple stops to both Iowa and Iowa State in the past and has visited Missouri and Arkansas. If the Cyclones can still get one of his five official visits, they could remain in the mix for this talented forward.

[h=3]Analysis[/h]Simpson isn't the most physically gifted player in the class, but he is one of the most effective. Standing only 5-foot-11 he shows absolutely no fear on the basketball court and has set his team up for a lot of wins during his high school and AAU careers. He needs to continue to refine his jumper, but his leadership and ability to run a team make him an in demand prospect.
Simpson, a top-100 point guard in the 2016 class, was a target during Hoiberg's tenure, and Iowa State has managed to keep pace now under Prohm. Simpson put the Cyclones in his top-6 in late June along with Iowa, Purdue, Illinois, Xavier and Texas Tech and CycloneFanatic.com reported this week that Simpson will make a visit to Ames in August.
Prohm has said Iowa State's recruiting focus is on point guards and bigs, and Simpson would fit the perfect profile of what Iowa State is searching for.
“Coach (Steve) Prohm has been hitting me up," Simpson told Scout.com's Brian Snow. "We are starting to build a good relationship. Right now I am just taking it slow, but it has been good so far.”

He now holds Power 5 offers from Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State while North Carolina, Stanford and Clemson were in attendance at one of his AAU games during the first week of the July evaluation period.
Waters regards Iowa State highly, listing the Cyclones in his current top-3 along with Oklahoma State and Harvard. He plans to cut his list to five schools after the July period ends and then take official visits. Iowa State is solid shape to land one.
