Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I think 99% of everyone wants smaller, more regional conferences. But the tv money wants consolidation to maximize value, and the money they are throwing at that is forcing schools to sign up out of fear of being left behind.

Eventually that consolidation drive is going to put intense pressure to have a superleague with 24 ish teams. It will be interesting to see if universities finally push back on that or not. But so far, money is undefeated.
I think both can happen: regional rivalries & super conference money.

I look forward to ISU playing UCF, Cincy & Houston- but I'm OK if we play them every 4 years in FB. What's important to me is a large part of our schedule be regional rivals that fans can roadtrip to games.

My ideal Big12 schedule would be 5 rivalry games & 4 rotation games.

He is a consultant, not a reporter.

But his recommendations here are insane!

Fight back? Change leadership? Hire new media and PR consultants? With whose money??? They already owe comcast $50M and nobody is going to extend credit to an entity that is about to lose all their members. MAYBE if they had done this 2 years ago, it could matter. But its way too late now. Changing the Captain on the Titanic really doesn't matter at this time.

Adding teams? LOFL. No one is going to get off their lifeboat to get back on the Titanic.

Stop cooperation? That's just petty at this point. And no one will care at all.

Honestly what they should be doing is talking about merging with the MWC. Helping their existing/remaining members as best as they can. Like helping your buddy move from his McMansion to an apartment after his divorce where the ex got all the money and the kids.

I have seen some dumb/useless consultants in my time, but this takes the cake.
Oh no, the soon-to-be-defunct PAC 12 is going to cut ties with us!

Ventured over to Tony Altimore's twitter to see if he is crying and irate. Lo and behold, he is talking up the Big 12. Hmm, what could have changed his tune? I almost couldn't figure out what he was talking about without his nice pretty charts. He is advocating the Big 12 bringing all the Pac the Big 10 doesn't take.

Feel bad for OSU and WSU. They are getting screwed over with this realignment stuff, like others before and nearly us.

It appears that teams added to the Big 10 will be receiving a lesser share of the cash while teams added to the Big 12 will receive a full share, making the numbers fairly similar at least for a few years….and putting you on a level playing field with your conference competitors. I’m surprised that’s not talked about more.

Nah. There aren't people in Corvallis and Pullman. The league is much better off in large population centers.
I'll add to that from a non-athletics perspective.

The two coming enrollment cliffs are very real and very scary to universities as a whole. These presidents have to look at not only athletics but keeping their enrollment numbers high enough to cover expenses. The impact having 10 or 12 extra students paying out of state tuition can be pretty significant over 4 years and that's why it's important to be where there are regular/non-athlete students to draw from.

Preface by agreeing the whole thing sucks…

I doubt ESPN/Fox values WSU over UCF, BYU or Cincy.

Adding Houston and BYU is part of why Pac is crumbling. They’d have been the most obvious available adds for them given they acted like SMU was a great candidate.
I don't get why some are down on adding UC and UH. They've both won basketball national championships. They've both had top 5 football teams. And they're both in top 25 media markets. What's not to like for the B12? Spotty attendance I presume is the main sticking point? You'd think that will improve once they become B12 regulars.

UCF, that one I get as a legit question mark. Outside of UF and FSU football, Florida isn't exactly known as a hotbed of sports fans. I'd bet that even today, half the kids enrolled at UCF for fall semester don't even know they're now in the B12 conference. And prolly don't care, either.

Yes. They're called Mormons. I think they all went to, or are going to go to BYU.
BYU is actually a solid academic school and somewhat selective, they don't take you just because you're a practicing Mormon. I think there's another school in the area that has a majority-Mormon enrollment, but is for the lesser academic talent. I want to say Weber State, but I forget for sure the school offhand.

1 in 8 countries occupy less land than Houston. With increased revenue and a bigger brand, they have a chance to be a really good program.

First, so many pages to read so I skipped a bunch. If covered already please direct me according.

What if the B10 add Oregon and Washington. That's 16 (damn I am good at math!), then maybe Stanford and Cal. Ok, now 18. Now if the ACC crumbles they will push for UNC and UVA. Twenty.

What does the SEC do?

Will the BixXII stop at 16? Will they go after Beavers and Cougars? Should they? Culturally those schools would be a good fit. Would they want to stop at 18 teams? We would want to have the same number of teams as SEC and Big10, right?

I see it as an arms race at this point. If you want to be one of the 3 surviving long term, you do exactly what the other 2 do. You maybe even consider jumping in front of them when it comes to volume of teams. I see three 20 team conferences in the near future.
