And something even older. One of these guys in pic in Hanover, Germany in 1881 is my great-grandfather (maybe great-great-grandfather). No one around anymore on my mother's side to help with that identification. Amazingly the pic survived only because my mother liked the old gold ornate frame!

Work in progress. The baby in this portrait is my mother. Man, some stern expressions in 1923! The girls white dresses were really washed out in the photo I scanned. Still need to try and maybe mask those and adjust more when I have the time and patience to practice on it some. As is, looks better than the original for sure. I also need a better monitor that isn't so damn sensitive to viewing angle so I can better judge the what-others-see for these if posted.

Family portraits were serious business in those days

Those are great, C! Do you mostly use natural light? Or do you use a softbox for portraits?

Thanks! Mostly all natural light. I'll add artificial light on occasion for outdoor shoots, but prefer not to fuss with it all.

My tip is to play with tone curves and contrast. Where I see most amateur photographs lack is having the "punch" factor, using out of camera images, especially when using RAW files, without any processing. The look flat and dull, no pop of color or even tones. So even the outdoor natural light photos can look artificially lit once you process out the images. The trick - not to go overboard.

I'll try to post photos here too, just not on my work computer to do so.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'll make sure to follow back. Sorry to anyone if I miss ya, it's not uncommon to get random requests of those just looking to attract followers. I tend to ignore those, so I hope I don't miss someone on here.

Here's an image I shot at the Hancock Observatory. I believe it's a 5 shot HDR. Considering the interior was lit, I was struggling with reflections as I was shooting through glass.

I have other photos I'll try to share, but don't want to overload the thread or seem pompous in sharing my work. I'll make sure to find images that seem to interest everyone and not just boring commercial work.

Does anyone here have any recommendations for a good starter camera? My girlfriend's really interested in getting into it. I asked her what she would like but she said she would just want something with higher quality.

I like Canon a lot, and that's my brand, but going up to higher ISOs on, say, a Rebel gets a lot of grain. I believe Nikons do the same. From what I've read and heard, Sony starter cameras have the best sensors, and can handle those high ISOs the best. BUT, there aren't a ton of them out there, so it's harder to find deals on stuff.

I liked the way this came out. Just shot it with my phone last summer.

That's great perspective and framing!

Higher quality can be achieved with a lot of the new cameras out there. Point-n-shoots have come a long way. But if you're wanting to explore photography, you may have to look entry level DSLR or mirrorless.

Angie's comments on ISO is something to consider as I'm sure, as most do starting out, you'll be shooting in very low light situations and will need something can that perform at 1600 or above.

Really like the jelly fish photo. Did you shoot that at an aquarium?

Yes, jelly was shot at the Henry Doorly Zoo. I actually just posted another. Thanks for the compliments.

Agreed, good eye.

The phone is such a great tool at experimenting with composition and perspectives. A camera you can carry everyday and practice. Find shots the look good and then come back to shoot with camera.

Just came across this photo from a year and a half ago or so.

Shot near San Francisco. Quick 3 shot HDR of Redwoods. Oh how I want to go back!

It's awesome to be able to get such depth of color in this shot when you were in a low-light area, I'm sure. How much did you have to increase saturation, etc.?
