I don't believe Darts ever said he didn't like McCarney...he just didn't like the results McCarney was having. I don't want to speak for Darts (and I don't) but intimating that he disliked him as a man is being disingenuous.

I agree...but look at who is continually bringing his name up...those that supported him until the bitter end and probably still wish he was at ISU...these are the people that need to "move on".
I pray every day that this happens! Don't get me wrong...I don't necessarily want the man to leave but if he is such a hot commodity from his success at ISU in 2 or 3 years that will mean that we have experienced unprecedented success during his tenure...and I am all for that!!
I feel bad for Dan right now. I mean he is coaching the D-line, in Tampa, Florida, at the number 6th ranked team in the country. He only has a few Million dollars in his back pocket and he has no coaching presure. Hopefully for Dan it's not to hot down there today. He might have to sweat and that would be a shame.
Actually, the red flags should have gone up after his third year...

He should have been "let go" at that point in my estimation.
IMO Dan's gameday choices were bad at times. But other things that hurt him as much or more were player retention (especially on the DL) and recruiting choices. It always seemed like DMac was scrambling in recruiting...one year they sign 5 TEs, the next 5 RBs, the next 8 OL. They never could get those classes balanced out. It seems like they were lacking any strategy. Also, when they went JUCO, they were VERY hit-and-miss. A good quarter of the JUCOs signed never even made campus.
The other thing that hurt DMac was the team offensive philosophy. I'm not sure whether Mac was forcing Brickey and Cotton to run Loney's offense or those guys were just bad at matching up scheme to talent, but something was definitely wrong there.

I was on board with giving Dan McCarney the old heave-ho!!
After the Mizzou loss at home I knew that Mac's time was coming to an end...because you could tell that the football program was stalling out and then it started going backwards and fans that was the end of old danny mac..
As far as Chizik is concerned it just too early to tell...Ask me the same question 3 years from now and I will have a definitive answer for you.

If Jamie Pollard was the AD...Mac would have been fired after his third year.
My God, please don't tell me Chizik is fired if he only wins 6 games in his first 3 years. What if he wins 7 or 8? Is he fired then?
It's gonna be a long road back to medicore ... and even longer to winner. Give the new one a break.
No one could be stupid enough to believe Dan should have been fired after the first 3 years. This is football it takes 5+ years to even build up to respectable. And with the pit that was ISU football before Dan, not losing every single game in that first 5 years was a miracle.
I was definately on the get rid of Dan wagon. I really liked Dan and he did a great job of promoting ISU athletics, but his teams just couldn't get it done. Maybe it was coaching, maybe talent, who knows.........

This gave Dan's teams some wins that they had not been getting, and got ISU into bowl games. Chizik is going to have it a lot tougher, because like it or not, the North is back and beating Iowa isn't enough to make a season any more.

Welcome all Tech fans. Everything has been said by now about Dan McCarney. Don't have anything to add. There have been big coaching changes at Iowa State in the last two years and every one has been an improvement.
The Big XII is in the middle of giant arms race. Texas Tech and Iowa State have a lot in common because we are both have big plans to make significant upgrades to all athletics facilities particularly the number one revenue producer, football. Isn't TTU planning to expand Jones Stadium from 52,882 to close to 70-80K? TTU and ISU are on about the same timeline.
Schools are upgrading facilities to attract better athletes, so they will have better teams, sell more season tickets for higher prices and make the athletic department more money. Our athletic director is making those decisions and fans will pay to see a winner. The best way to sell season tickets is put a winner on the field. Coach Chizik will do it when he gets his players in his system,
TTU hired the coach of the future, Mike Leach, 8 years ago. ISU fans hope we just hired ours. Although I liked Spike Dykes, I think TTU has averaged 50,000+ attendance since Leach, and his offense, has been there.

Listened to Dan on sportzone 1620 yesterday. They called him the assistant coach. He is enthusiatic and was a line coach at Iowa City in 1989 when Jim Leavitt was a graduate assistant. He is looking for a head coach job if they come to him. He is happy about being #6. He has daughters at ISU and Iowa still. He loves his past players and wish them well. He is one of the nicest coaches in the business.
That said, Gene did not fire/resign Dan. J P did. Gene has a system which will let us compete. Defense, speed and special teams appears to be instilled at KSU, ISU, Colorado and offense at Nebraska. Times will be tougher in the North the next five years. We have to get better. We can. W need more speed players. We will see tons of jucos the next two years. We appear to be doing it right. I just am surprised that new staffs have to lose so many games before they get it going. Look at Callahan and Hawkins and Gundy. Prince is a fluke. Seems like the worst head coaches may turn out to be Pinkel and Callahan in the long run. Hmmm.

Actually, I believe the resignation terms stipulated that all contracts for all the coaches would be honored as far as pay. Or at least had terms spelled out for the buyout of all coaches involved.
Everyone realizes that it technically was a "Resign with dignity or be fired" type of situation. By taking the resignation route, Mac was allowed to negotiate a situation that was probably best for him and his coaches plus what was best for ISU.
Personally, I think it was the right move. Now and for the future. As Pollard said, his intent was for the football program to be successful and Dan to be head coach for as long as he wanted. Instead, we had a sick program in need of change. HOPE was the biggest reason for change. New coach Chizik brought hope.
Dude, it's not just the number of wins in three years...it's whether or not the program is going forwards or backwards...if it's 3-2-1...that is not a reasonable progression. If it is 1-2-3 that is more acceptable...although still not quick enough for me. A guy that can really coach will not win only one game in his third year at a school.

He got more than anyone before him, and did less with it (the North was pathetic the last three years, Tech would have walked through it) than those before him.
Yet there are people on here who are grateful for never winning against anyone when they were good (unless they had Iowa on their jerseys, playing to the long standing second class citizen mentality of the fanbase).
He was the longest tenured coach in the league, yet he had to pull every string that he could last Winter to end up with was a d-line coaching job. There is a reason for that.
Yet people still lick his *** on here like he actually won big. The man was and remains a self promoting machine. Unfortunately for him, records, and game tapes don't lie.
