Question for Clone fans re: coaching change

I was against getting rid of McCarney only because I didn't think we could have gotten a coach better than him. But much to my suprise we got GC, so I'm not too sore about it.

Hasn't this subject been discussed to death on the site? Yes, Dan was great for ISU, Chizik looks like he will be great as well. It is amazing how much ISU fans still talk about Mac. He was quoted three or four times in the ISU Daily today. I think it is time for everyone to move on and look towards the future instead of talking about someone who has not worked at Iowa State for nearly a year.
We thought we had a similar problem with Leach and the defensive coordinator. Nobody really thought Leach would fire Setencich mid-season and when he did, a new level of optimism sprouted in Lubbock.
I think Chizik was a great hire for the Cyclones. I'm not sure there was a hotter assistant coach out there at the time. Do you guys fear that he'll have success and be gone in 2-3 years?
I don't see anyone mocking or ridiculing anyone. When you're outspoken, you can expect to be associated with a side of a debate, especially when it's not the popular side.
I think there's definitely some of that. I think he chose us over some other opportunities for a reason, though. Ames really is a great little place to live. You have great fan support, great support from the AD and the university president. If you succeed, you're not living in anyone's shadow (ala Ferentz and Hayden Fry), and you don't have to make excuses for your conference.
You'll always have that issue when you "hire above your head", but I think the ISU job, while difficult, stands on it's own against any non-powerhouse BCS conference job.
Agreed. Having success isn't bad, even if your coach is looking to jump ship. If Chizik can get us to the point that we are winning enough games that he becomes a hot commidity, then great. I see no problem with that.

I was going to say - no, I'm not worried about it because I really don't see Dan being a head coach at a D1 program again anytime soon.
There were a bunch of reasons why Dan didn't succeed more at ISU. Sure, a good portion would be ISU's position in college football, geography, lack of facilities and money - at least in his early years. All the standard slams against the Cyclones. And most have a degree of truth. But there's plenty of blame on his shoulders alone, as well. Til the end of time I believe that Dan is a master motivator, perhaps a good talent developer (that's been hit and miss), but he is NOT a good gameday coach. And I think the powers that be in college football realize that.
DM is gone, and you need to get over it. I actually find it refreshing to have a coach that will tell it like it is and take responsibility, instead of someone telling me how awesome the competition was and how bad things were when he got here.
A bunch of red flags should have been thrown up during the 2002-2003 collapse. Actually, a number of people did raise questions, but they were pretty much shouted down and ridiculed by the DM fanatics. Something went terribly wrong during the second half of 2002-2003. That something was never corrected, and it affected every season following. Fortunately, we now have ADJP, and he won't let such things go on with out correction.

I concur - Darts and I butted heads over this many a time, but he kept the personal separate from the coaching. I made a snide comment about something like "insert Darts comment here" after something personal happened to Mac, and Darts ripped me a new one over it. He likes the guy just like everyone else, he's just not deluded about what happened in Dan's 12 years here (don't worry Darts, I'm still SLIGHTLY deluded - call me sentimental... :wink

Actually, for the most part, I've been convinced he wasn't that great a coach. 1 really good year (what should have been a stepping stone), 6 mediocre years (with a couple of really lousy ones mixed in), and those were horrifically offset by his first 5 seasons. I pretty much lost faith in Mac as the season went along and our bowl eligibility kept slipping, but after the loss to KU which ended any hope I officially switched bandwagons.
If he's gone in 2-3 years, it can only mean that he's raised us to levels of unprecedented success in a pretty short time span. Hopefully then it will be easier for us to find and retain another top quality coach.
How can 56-87 be considered "fantastic"?
I would agree that winning roughly 40% of your games would be great if you predecessor(s) only won 15-20% of their games...however, his two predecessors also won roughly 40% of their games.
Do you consider Walden and Criner "fantastic" coaches as well?
My God...this post makes it sound almost like an abusive relationship where the person being abused sticks around with their abuser because they cannot see how leaving will improve the situation. Incredible.
