Quarterback Analysis

No, he wasn't great. But certainly good enough, I think. Hopefully another season under his belt will improve the mental side. If not, well, we've got a decent QB room.
Taking off the Cardinal and Gold sunglasses for a minute here, and Dekkers was without a doubt the 9th or 10th best starting QB in the Big 12 a year ago. Several teams had backups come in who looked better.

Hughes is a Jr and Becht is a R-Fr. Those couple of years make a huge difference in recognition, mental processing and decision making that can equalize raw athleticism. Depending on what the coaching staff is asking the QB to do, it may make sense to choose the less talented but more experienced player.

At the end of the day, everyone is going to complain no matter who is getting sacked or throwing INTs.
You are bringing me back to the days of Grant Rohach and Sam Richardson with that last sentence.

At Iowa State, we need good to great QB play to finish near the top of the Big 12. Other than Purdy and a few other ISU greats, QB play at ISU has been a weakness when compared to the rest of the league most years. We need to have really good QB play. Dekkers showed promise at the start of last season, but seemed to really struggle at times during Big 12 play. The question is do you think Dekkers can improve enough to allow us to content for the Big 12 Championship this year or next? If not, we need to find out if we have that kind of guy in the room.

To quote Jim Mora: PLAYOFFS?! I just wanna win a game.

We've been blitzed into oblivion the last few years, which is a big part of the problem. When it's 5-on-5, our OL does fine in pass protection. But we haven't had a reliable answer for blitzes for ages. A lot of that falls on a combination of QB, WR and playcalling.

Brock was able to escape when he had a lane. But when rushers stayed disciplined and collapsed the pocket without opening holes, he'd get swallowed up too.
We have sucked at hot routes basically all but two of Purdy's years and even then they were often lucky gunslinger type of decisions.

Thanks everyone for their insights and opinions.

I do not wish for anyone to be forced out if they want to stay AND I don't want to convict anyone before we know the crime but if @Jeremy is right and we have the deepest QB room we have ever had and Rocco's ceiling is higher than Dekkers we might be okay.

If the above is the case AND Dekkers is out for an extended period here is my dream scenario.

Rocco shows he is the next Brock. He gets drafted after next year earlier than Mr Irrelevant and makes an NFL team.

Dekkers learns his lesson but realizes after Rocco is setting the world on fire he is better off transferring. He has a solid career at Washington State and wins the Mountain West MVP his senior year.

Kohl is committed to Iowa State and sits behind Rocco. He gets in enough snaps each year to hone his skills. He takes over for Rocco and is THE MAN. He gets drafted in the first round.

Campbell starts to develop a pipeline at QB where guys sit a year or two and then get a chance to shine and get drafted. The bench is always solid.

Woof. That's some strong kool aid my man.

Cherry and Lemon flavored! All the time!

(What's the fun of being a fan if I can't dream - so long as I accept that reality does sometimes set in - such as when I didn't win the Powerball).

Name 8 or 9 better that had the same or similar o-line, rb production, protection, and wr/te threats. I’d argue that the only one of those groups that I note that was a benefit to HD over other qbs in the big 12 is that he had x as a wr which was a much better wr than a majority of big 12 qbs. I’d also argue though that after X, production at the wr position was probably one of the worst groups of the big 12 wr groups.

But how has any of that drastically improved this year?

By that metric don't even watch the season. Half a year of adjustments isn't going to suddenly invent a better WR or TE core or improve line play when our best lineman graduated and our only consistent WR graduated.

Dekker’s performance last year was actually pretty good overall. Led the Big 12 in Completion percentage and was the 3rd highest ranked overall. If our special teams and injuries weren’t so bad we would have easily won 2-4 more games and then everyone wouldn’t be dumping on him so much. Yes he made some dumb mistakes but what first year starter doesn’t. That being said, with the gambling issue, he might not ever start another game if Rocco or one of the other guys step up and shine.
Haven’t seen Average Yards Per Attempt, that’s critical when talking completion percentage. Carr made a long career with the Raiders with a big completion percentage on the shortest average yards per attempt in history.

I would guess that it hasn’t drastically improved since last season but that’s not going to keep me from watching them… just pointing out to the previous poster that HD wasn’t chopped liver last year (maybe minus his INTs).

Everyone will probably take this the wrong way but I'll say it anyway - our defense was really bad at getting turnovers last year. They were lights out at shutting teams down, but really never gave the offense short fields to work with.

We were 116th in TO Margin (15 takeaways vs 22 giveaways), and 98th in punt return average per the official NCAA stats. So we were always starting a long way from our endzone. And with an offense that wasn't explosive, we had to be more consistent than we were capable of.

I AM NOT BLAMING THE DEFENSE. THE DEFENSE LAST YEAR WAS EXCEPTIONAL. But the specific circumstances we saw last year made our offensive issues worse.

I anticipate Becht will be QB1 to start the season. He is a high IQ player who has been around football his entire life with his Dad, Anthony, being a solid player/coach. As a recruit, he held P5 offers from Ole Miss, Wake Forest and Iowa State. Also had Harvard and other Ivy league schools on him. Ultimately chose ISU and redshirted last year behind Dekkers.

He was the primary back up last season and saw a decent amount of action (29 snaps) in the final game vs TCU last season. Went 7-12 with 65 yrds and threw an INT.

At 6'1 205 he is mobile and can make some solid throws. Doesn't have elite arm talent but he can make plays. For this team to be successful this year Becht needs to limit TOs - which I think he can do a good job at - and utilize his football IQ to help lead the offense. That, paired with ISUs defense will keep the team in games and give us plenty of opportunities to win games.

Becht looks almost like a clone of Purdy honestly. Same size basically... both have big strong legs... both can run... and both have somewhat limited arm strength. Purdy had pretty good accuracy though... not sure about that from Becht yet.

Becht has a better arm than Purdy. One thing that Purdy was elite at though was his accuracy and throwing with anticipation. Hard to tell how good Becht is in those departments until we see it.
