Quarterback Analysis

I just think we were waaay closer than some remember last year, and I have confidence the coaching changes will cause a much quicker rebound than some. We were not awful last year, despite the record. Just awful at critical momenta. Hoping that new coaches and the growth and experience of the players will improve this. If we had made a few kicks or not dropped a few TDs and gone 6-6, people would be discussing this year very very differently.
You're correct. A bunch of interceptions away from having a chance.

It's certainly not going to be our Achilles Heel.
My concerns go in this order:
1. O-Line play
2. Receiver group without X
3. QB

I think if we get an O-line that can even kind of block and more than 1 receiver that can find a way to get open, one of our QBs will be able to step into that role.

I'm not really concerned about running backs at all, because I have no idea how to evaluate last year. They were getting killed in the backfield. I'm not sure Superman would have been able to run well with our line last year.

It ALL comes down to the Oline.

Hot Take: Log me in as off the Dekkers bandwagon. Dudes got all the physical gifts a QB could ever need to be successful and the mind of a potato that has been sitting at the back of your cupboard forgotten for 8 months.

Cant read a defense. Zeros in on 1 target and doesn't often progress beyond that 1 target. sure he has a 60 something odd percent completion rate, but 4/6 passes he throws are behind the LOS or within 2 yards of it. Not impressed. Hopefully his mental game has taken a huge leap forward coming into this season. I don't know that I am sold on any of the QB's... really hope the O-line play takes a huge step forward and the run game gets established because I am not convinced that QB play can carry our offense as it stands this year.
He's really lucky he had X last year.

If you think Dekkers was the main issue last year, you weren't watching. He wasn't amazing. But we had major ST issues, kicking issues, OL issues, penalty issues, etc. All in the red zone.
I agree with this for the most part but his pocket presence wasn't overwhelming.

Special teams are always bad. Have given up hope they improve

This offense doesn’t need a qb to spread the field. They need a good Oline, run the ball and have a qb that can move a lil, put the ball in the right spot quickly and not turn the ball over.

That's kind of people's point when they are being labeled pessimistic.

According to FPI our offensive efficiency was 82nd and the ST efficiency was 124th. They were truly, truly bad last year in every phase and Dekkers wasn't great either.

I'm excited for the season, I've got my season tickets again as I have every year for 20+ years. But when it comes to QB, OL, and ST, I've got to see it before I believe it.

I saw him play a lot at Ankeny as well. Even at Ankeny last year he had some real tough games. A part of the reason he was ranked so high was because of the physical tools he has and how they project to the next level. The ranking isn't necessarily indicative of how ready he is right out of the gate. I know people like to point to Purdy when talking about Kohl starting right away but Brock is such an exception. Stats aren't everything but here are Brock's SR year stats vs JJ's.

Brock: 237/364 4,405 yards, 65% completion, 18.6 AVG, 57 TD to 9 INT.

JJ: 155/239 2,023 yards, 65% completion, 13.1 AVG, 17TD to 4 INT.

Kohl was excellent at Ankeny last year. He struggled some but let's be honest - they had almost no running game against top teams and the OL left a lot to be desired. These are high school kids so I'm going to leave it at that.

Most people call me a pessimist on here, though I firmly believe I'm almost always in the middle... aka realist. Let me clarify a bit...
  1. We have the most talented QB room we've ever had.
  2. That doesn't mean we have Tom Brady in the room, but we don't have nearly the drop-off from 1 through 3 as typically seen.
  3. All of our QBs are going to have up and down games given their age, skills, OL, etc.
  4. Rocco has a high ceiling, higher than Dekkers. His mobility with good arm gives us options even if our OL sucks ass again.
  5. Kohl is incredibly smart and picking things up faster than anybody expected. He has the highest ceiling of any QB we've ever had, but he's got a lot of learning and adjusting to do. I wouldn't see him ready to play much this year unless Rocco and Hughes struggle big time.
  6. Hughes was a necessary addition once Dekkers became an unknown but also brings some things that Rocco and Kohl are lacking - experience being paramount.
I think no matter who plays, it's going to be up to the OL to improve and give them time. We supposedly have a lot of depth in the WR and TE rooms but we've yet to see any of it shine on game-day. We need several targets to step up or it's going to be a really long year.
Yeah I think a lot of us are zeroing in on the "OL sucks ass" portion of your comments

Dekker’s performance last year was actually pretty good overall. Led the Big 12 in Completion percentage and was the 3rd highest ranked overall. If our special teams and injuries weren’t so bad we would have easily won 2-4 more games and then everyone wouldn’t be dumping on him so much. Yes he made some dumb mistakes but what first year starter doesn’t. That being said, with the gambling issue, he might not ever start another game if Rocco or one of the other guys step up and shine.
