Actually, that’s realism.I wish I had your optimism.
…and this would be rampant pessimism. It is probably right on. I mean, we were picked to finish 10th in the Big 12. I am wondering if that is too generous if I'm being honest.

That is an awfully talented room to take over...Speaking of local talent, I'm big time pulling for Abu to take the starting running back position. He put size on his senior year and his speed is amazing. Also Kai Black at receiver though I think we have some dudes coming up in that room.
You're correct. A bunch of interceptions away from having a chance.I just think we were waaay closer than some remember last year, and I have confidence the coaching changes will cause a much quicker rebound than some. We were not awful last year, despite the record. Just awful at critical momenta. Hoping that new coaches and the growth and experience of the players will improve this. If we had made a few kicks or not dropped a few TDs and gone 6-6, people would be discussing this year very very differently.
I'm a realist. How is it pessimistic given the last two years? Plus we have 4 new coaches. TJ's success has given people more confidence than is warranted IMO.Actually, that’s realism.

It's certainly not going to be our Achilles Heel.
My concerns go in this order:
1. O-Line play
2. Receiver group without X
3. QB
I think if we get an O-line that can even kind of block and more than 1 receiver that can find a way to get open, one of our QBs will be able to step into that role.
I'm not really concerned about running backs at all, because I have no idea how to evaluate last year. They were getting killed in the backfield. I'm not sure Superman would have been able to run well with our line last year.
He's really lucky he had X last year.Hot Take: Log me in as off the Dekkers bandwagon. Dudes got all the physical gifts a QB could ever need to be successful and the mind of a potato that has been sitting at the back of your cupboard forgotten for 8 months.
Cant read a defense. Zeros in on 1 target and doesn't often progress beyond that 1 target. sure he has a 60 something odd percent completion rate, but 4/6 passes he throws are behind the LOS or within 2 yards of it. Not impressed. Hopefully his mental game has taken a huge leap forward coming into this season. I don't know that I am sold on any of the QB's... really hope the O-line play takes a huge step forward and the run game gets established because I am not convinced that QB play can carry our offense as it stands this year.
If you think Dekkers was the main issue last year, you weren't watching. He wasn't amazing. But we had major ST issues, kicking issues, OL issues, penalty issues, etc. All in the red zone. You're correct. A bunch of interceptions away from having a chance.
I agree with this for the most part but his pocket presence wasn't overwhelming. If you think Dekkers was the main issue last year, you weren't watching. He wasn't amazing. But we had major ST issues, kicking issues, OL issues, penalty issues, etc. All in the red zone.
Special teams are always bad. Have given up hope they improveIf you think Dekkers was the main issue last year, you weren't watching. He wasn't amazing. But we had major ST issues, kicking issues, OL issues, penalty issues, etc. All in the red zone.
No, he wasn't great. But certainly good enough, I think. Hopefully another season under his belt will improve the mental side. If not, well, we've got a decent QB room.I agree with this for the most part but his pocket presence wasn't overwhelming.

I saw him play a lot at Ankeny as well. Even at Ankeny last year he had some real tough games. A part of the reason he was ranked so high was because of the physical tools he has and how they project to the next level. The ranking isn't necessarily indicative of how ready he is right out of the gate. I know people like to point to Purdy when talking about Kohl starting right away but Brock is such an exception. Stats aren't everything but here are Brock's SR year stats vs JJ's.
Brock: 237/364 4,405 yards, 65% completion, 18.6 AVG, 57 TD to 9 INT.
JJ: 155/239 2,023 yards, 65% completion, 13.1 AVG, 17TD to 4 INT.
His field vision was poor. He rarely found the open man imo.If you think Dekkers was the main issue last year, you weren't watching. He wasn't amazing. But we had major ST issues, kicking issues, OL issues, penalty issues, etc. All in the red zone.

Yeah I think a lot of us are zeroing in on the "OL sucks ass" portion of your commentsMost people call me a pessimist on here, though I firmly believe I'm almost always in the middle... aka realist. Let me clarify a bit...
I think no matter who plays, it's going to be up to the OL to improve and give them time. We supposedly have a lot of depth in the WR and TE rooms but we've yet to see any of it shine on game-day. We need several targets to step up or it's going to be a really long year.
- We have the most talented QB room we've ever had.
- That doesn't mean we have Tom Brady in the room, but we don't have nearly the drop-off from 1 through 3 as typically seen.
- All of our QBs are going to have up and down games given their age, skills, OL, etc.
- Rocco has a high ceiling, higher than Dekkers. His mobility with good arm gives us options even if our OL sucks ass again.
- Kohl is incredibly smart and picking things up faster than anybody expected. He has the highest ceiling of any QB we've ever had, but he's got a lot of learning and adjusting to do. I wouldn't see him ready to play much this year unless Rocco and Hughes struggle big time.
- Hughes was a necessary addition once Dekkers became an unknown but also brings some things that Rocco and Kohl are lacking - experience being paramount.
True, but Brock had a late offer from Alabama so he definitely had higher talent than people initially realized. Probably should have been a higher rated recruit, which would make his performance less surprising.... Brock came out of nowhere as a freshman with like 2 months of practice, and he turned out OK. So you never know. ...
Texas Tech is doomedMaybe we should try him out at linebacker.
