Potential Transfers '14

What do we do if we miss on transfers that would actually make a contribution? Does Fred just bank the scholly knowing that we've already got the talent to compete next year? Or would he rather bring someone in for a year to practice against?

If you can get a one and done guy there is no reason to bank a sholly.
What if the one and done guy you can get would be competing for PT with SDW and not MM, Naz, or Thomas, but you could get a Kane level redshirt and one guy?

If ISU ends up with a 3rd scholarship to give, then I think Carlino might be worth a look. But I think a lot of the interest in him is just because posters here have seen him play, and he has had some success against ISU. Looking at his shooting percentages, he is not all that great. Now that may be BYU's system, his coaching, or his natural talent. Fred could probably help with that, but if you take a 5th year player I'm guessing you are not anticipating having to help him with his game all that much. DeAndre improved some on his stats this year because of the freedom Fred gives players, and because of the improvement in the talent around him. Fred didn't have to remake his game, he just had to put him in the right position to succeed. That may be all that is required with Carlino, but I think he could be a risk.

I think Dejean-Jones fits ISU's needs much better, and I think ISU needs another big/wing that can shoot from outside to compensate for possibly not having McKay for the first semester, and to deepen the front court in case of injury. I think it is important for ISU's bigs to shoot the 3 under Fred's system. It opens up everything else. Fred and his team can adapt to not having that, but let's face it, the offense is more efficient with it.

Also, if ISU feels it needs another shooter, there are still a lot more transfers to come, including a lot more 5th year players. I'm guessing there will be some in there with better shooting percentages than Carlino. We just have to be patient, and trust the staff.

I'm more interested in if Carlino can guard anybody than if he can create his own shot.

Thomas couldnt guard a gallon of milk...sooooo.....

I go back and forth....I think a seasoned guard with Carlinos ability would be a nice presence given we will be still pretty young in the backcourt. But i also dont want to take minutes from Naz either.

Oh...and theres that little thing of having any idea if hes even interested in coming here.

Count me as one who is only interested in Carlino if BDJ falls through. Otherwise, I think there will be better candidates available, even if they are traditional ones who have to sit out a year. I've got no issues with one of those too.

I thought he improved greatly over the course of the season.

I think Matt Carlino would be a great get personally. Also, count me in on the Bryce Dejean Jones sweepstakes as well... That kid can ball!!!!

The biggest need is a play-making combo guard (1/2), which BDJ would fill. He is also long and athletic enough he could guard elite wings that may give Long, Thomas, Hogue and Nader trouble. He has All-Big 12 ability. Carlino would also fill that need for a combo guard, but he is not going to be an All-Big 12 player, although there is less risk imo.

I agree the second need is a big. If you look at what we have before McKay can play, it may be the biggest need, but I prioritize March more. It is likely too much to ask for a big that can bang, rebound, and shoot 3Ps. Really, with what McKay and Nader will add, if we can have the first two, it would still be worth it. Perhaps that can be Edozie, but that seems unlikely.

If a third becomes available from a little used back-up transferring, as tempting as it would be to go all out for next year, I think you almost have to get the best available redshirt transfer or juco guard. Adding three 5th year seniors, Nader, and McKay to 5 returning guys with starting experience would be tough for even a zen master like Fred.

That at 5'10" 165 and needing to redshirt, we will pass.

This kid can ball despite those less than impressive variables. But I don't think we're one of those schools who's in need of a transfer PG. If he did happen to come here he and Man Man would both be juniors. It's not gonna happen.

I think they only take one graduate transfer at most but I could see them using both on transfers that have to sit out.

They will take at least one grad transfer and probably two that sit. IMO we will lose one.
