Potential Transfers '14

Based on his stats, Carlino seems more like an offensive minded point guard than a shooter. Has a high Assist/Turnover ratio and takes more twos than threes (though he probably shouldn't). Might be able to use him to back up Morris and take some minutes at the 2, but if he's looking for lots of playing time he'll probably end up somewhere else.
 
Not in love with Carlino. Would much rather have BDJ. Obviously I trust Fred. Just saying based of what I've watched.

Fred has scouted both guys (and we could take both, too) at least once in his career so he is familiar with both I'm guessing.
 
Carlino's positive side is that he can get his own shot which is something that Long and Thomas are lacking.

And hitting his own shot at a 38.5% clip. Something that I'm sure Naz could do if he forced stuff to create his own shot too.

I liked Carlino as a player and wouldn't argue if Fred may want to take on a experienced 2 guard who has produced. Thing is, in my opinion, his skill set is quite similar to Matt, Naz, and I am not sure if Fred would want to risk their development for a slight improvement at the position. A slasher, such as B D-J, would be a player a skill set next years roster doesn't currently have and would add to the wrinkles Fred's offense.
That is unless, it clicks for SDW and/or MattyIce by next fall, which I haven't ruled out.

I agree. I think Matt will be better than Carlino next year. You also have to remember that it takes time to adjust to a new system in one year, Kane not withstanding. Matt, Naz, and SDW already know the system.

Now, the BDJ brings a whole different skill set with his athleticism. Despite every team's hope of making it to the Final Four, having elite athletes always seems to trump, everything else being equal. Hogue's athleticism vs. Connecticut being a prime example.
 
As I recall from seeing a few BYU games this last year, Carlino was a pretty wild player. He could hit several shots in a row but then follow it up with 4 or 5 misses and a couple turnovers in a matter of a few minutes. Got out of control a bunch. If Fred wants him, I definitely trust his judgment more than mine. However, at this point, I don't really see him being the best fit.
 
Tyler Haws would be pretty sweet. avg like 25....I know he's not leaving, just saying

I heard he doesn't have the best depth perception..I'm not sure why though.

Carlino (in 2011) was in the same position as McKay as far as having to set out a spring semester followed by a fall semester in order to gain eligibility. But a player is immediately eligible once a professor submits his grades in the fall semester. So Jameel could take his finals during "dead week" as long as professors approve this, which is allowed with other non student athletes. 2. Any other year I would really want a high character senior point guard as an addition to the Iowa State roster. But I don't think Carlino would make next years team a whole lot better. Monte will start at the point and Custer will pick up minutes there as well. Leaving Carlino as a "combo guard" who doesn't shoot the long ball at a great percentage. 3. He could improve under Fred but would he any better than Naz or Matt Thomas? I don't think so. It seems like Calino is looking to start and play 30-35 minutes per game whch we can't offer.

1. Interesting. Does ISU still have a dead week? Finals start Monday the 15th, so if there is a deadweek, he could be eligible as early as the 5th, if true? That would be great.

3. His game against ISU this past year was better than any Thomas or Naz have had imo. And he is a veteran senior with a lot to play for. He would make us better. He is a senior combo guard that most nights can create for the offense and himself. Streaky shooter, but we have seen that before. Naz and Thomas will hopefully add elements to their games, but adding Carlino adds something to our backcourt imo.

4.)This is the risk with most 5th year guys, from both sides. Will their expectations be met, and how will they react if not? We lose Kane, so we could offer a starting job and 30-35 minutes for a talented enough combo guard. Is that Carlino? Probably not that many minutes, but perhaps a starting spot.

He shot 1-5 against us from 3. I still think people are confusing him with their other shooters.

If Fred would want him, then fine, I'm sure he would be a fine player for us. I just don't see it happening. He's not that much of an upgrade if at all.
 
I don't mind the BYU kid. However, I would like to get a game changer type guy like I think the Antoin Mason could be if he tranfers. If we have an extra scholly I would not mind the BYU kid if we can't fill it out with better recruits. I would not like to make him a priority though

I don't use points as the sole metric. If we were discussing a 3P competition I would agree, but we are in need of a complete combo guard more than one that is just a sharp-shooter imo.

Again, it comes down to what the alternative is. I prefer BDJ, but Carlino is certainly better than not using the scholarship, and he is probably better than all but a few other transfers. He is a different type of guard than Naz or Thomas, and having motivated, versatile seniors under the leadership of Fred has proven to be a winning formula.
 
What do we do if we miss on transfers that would actually make a contribution? Does Fred just bank the scholly knowing that we've already got the talent to compete next year? Or would he rather bring someone in for a year to practice against?
