Potential Transfers '14

I really don't see anyone saying that we shouldn't be taking transfers. Maybe I missed something.

Some people don't like only seeing a player for a year or two. With a 1 or 1.5 year guy I see that a little. The 2 and 3 year transfers seem like they're here forever because how much do most freshman play. We've been pretty lucky to have Niang and Morris be ready almost immediately (well maybe not totally lucky because perhaps Fred knows the freshman who can play from day 1). Even Ejim may have been forced into starting so early on a team that wasn't loaded.

Well, they may prefer a four year to a one or two year, but I doubt they prefer that so much as to give up wins to do it.

I think the biggest thing that people are hoping for is that we get guys with the talent of Kane and Royce, but get more than one year out of them.

I wouldn't stop bringing in transfers when available but hopefully we can bring in freshmen superstars as well.

I've thought about this a bit.

Who would have a more important impact on Iowa State?
Vaughn for one year

or

Melvin Ejim for 4 years?

That one year might be really good, but Ejim has started and won more games as a Cyclone than anyone else.

That's not the argument. Those 3 years you still use the scholly.

It's Ejim for 4 years vs Vaughn for 1 year/ Royce White redshirt and then play for a year/DeAndre Kane for a year.

Both situations use 4 years of scholarships.

Jabari Parker is the only one and done freshman this year who may have been as valuable as Kane, and recent developments have me doubting even that. That puts RV in perspective just as well I think.

Not that I'm dissagreeing with the freshman vs transfer route but I think there are a number of freshman out there that if you put them on the cyclones, they have a HUGE impact on this team that would rival what Kane has done. Would I trade Kane for any of them... Probably not but you put Embiid on this team instead of Kane (remember you'd still have Morris, Thomas, Naz, SDW and maybe someone else you've picked up) and this team is just as tough if not tougher.

ie:

Wiggins,
Embiid,
Gordon,
Parker,
Randle,
Ennis

Put me in the boat for bringing in the most talented transfers available, regardless of whether they can play immediately or how long they will be here. If they are like Lee and can play immediately, I just consider it a bonus, but I'd hardly say that we are desperate for someone. It definitely doesn't hurt though. Also, lets say we land Lee for one of our two available scholarships. If that were the case, I would be ecstatic to sign another transfer for our last scholly who would have to sit out out a year. I've come to love always have a guy or two sitting out in the wings making the scout team tougher than snot.

@GoodmanESPN: Richmond's Wayne Sparrow and Tim Singleton both transferring, sources told ESPN.

I doubt we purse either. Singleton played less minutes at Richmond than a guy like Percy or SDW played here, he's probably going to a low level school or DII. Sparrow played a good amount of minutes but never seemed to do much of anything either. I doubt he's the type of guy we want if he plays 18 minutes a game but barley records any stats

Possibly, but will Huggins really let him transfer in conference?

So how do coaches control where a player can transfer anyways? They don't have a choice in whether a player decides to leave, right?

I don't think they have to release them from their scholarship, right?

I might not have all my facts correct, but once a player signs with a school that school both has the ability to not grant somebody a release from their scholarship, and also to determine where a player can't transfer to in the event he is released and decides to transfer. Ultimately the player can transfer anywhere he wants, but he may have to pay his own way for a year.

If you remember, Jared Uthoff was at Wisconsin and had his transfer to all Big 10 schools, ACC schools, Marquette, and Iowa State restricted. As a result he paid his own way for his first year at Iowa.

But a school can pull a scholarship no questions asked, correct? And/or scholarships are awarded yearly? Seems unfair if that's the case.

They are awarded yearly, but I think a player needs a release to start talking to other schools. Even though West Virginia's season is done, I think Harris is technically still on scholarship until the end of the year, and therefore can't talk to other schools until he is either granted a release or the scholarship runs out for the year.
