Potential Transfers '14

1 and done freshman like Vaughn or 1 and done graduate transfers like Kane?

Best kid out there is what matters

That's the thing with transfers as well they are grown men when they get here for the most part. I will take them over an 18 year old boy any day of the week to fill most of our roster. There does need to be balance with that to make sure the ship stays afloat but Hoiberg seem's to have that figured out :).

As a fan I want someone that I can watch for 3-4 years. Yes, the transfer thing has worked out this long. Playing time can be an issue for some players because of what the coach has said to them during recruiting. Red shirting and having a core group of guys that you know is going to be there year in and year out builds better team chemistry. Like DSMCy said it would be nice to use JC or transfers to fill the holes where CFH didn't get a high school recruit or missed on a guys ability to play at this level.

This argument would have some validity if any of the things you listed were issues at ISU. We have great team chemistry, its amazing the way our guys talk to each other and respond to one another. Plus, guys like Ejim, Niang, Long, Morris and Thomas that will be 4 year guys. Chris Babb was here 3 years, Nader and McKay will be too. Anderson and Kane are the only 1 yr guys we've had, both were team leaders and neither took playing time away from any incoming kids. Both were great additions to the program on and off the court.

As a fan I want to watch a winner. I'd take Deandre Kane or Royce White over damn near all of the 3-4 year players we have had in the last decade, Ejim being the only one who is higher on my list of favorite players... Niang will be right up there too.

Redshirting is a rarity in basketballl, not a tool used to build team chemistry. Not sure why you are talking about that in a basketball post.

Hard to believe we still have fans worrying about 3-4 year players over best talent available.

I get the sentimental reasons for favoring 4-year guys. I mean how special has it been to watch Ejim rake in the awards and big wins this year after watching him develop from day 1? But you're right, from a team results standpoint, you can't argue with transfers. That has been a proven success at this point.

We seem to found a nice balance between both.

Man, I love reading the Iowa boards. Every time there's a transfer, a whole bunch of them want to go after the transfer, and then there is one poster reminding them that they are doing everything the right way.

To me, no more special than watching Kane this year.

I don't think one viewpoint is more right than the other, but I think you might be in the minority. Or at least, Kane and Ejim's seasons are special in different ways? I just don't think you can rip on people for not seeing Fred's results just because there's a romantic attachment to having a guy for four seasons.

I was having an argument with myself. Of all the players under Fred's tenure which player would I most want in this team. This is pre-Niang injury. I argued myself into thinking that Babb over Royce would be the best.

Why? Because we already have a player like Royce in Kane. What we are missing is that shutdown perimeter defense and outside threat. Also Babb was such a heady player.

The romantic attachment to four-year guys is a whole lot less if they don't win.

What's better than just Kane or just Royce? Them on the same team. I wouldn't know how to guard us if we had Royce in this year's team.

I do not see how some romantic attachment to four year guys clouds one's ability to see Fred's results.

this. Did anyone really enjoy Diante Garretts 4 years more than Fizer's time here? How about the 2 year stints from Willoughby, Cato, Tinsley or the other greats?

I think both DeAndre and Melvin are special to Cyclone fans, but it is a little different (not saying I care for recruiting purposes).

With Melvin, we watched him grow as a player and in importance to the team. You get pretty attached to a guy like that.

DeAndre was like "dang this guy is good. Damn this guy is great. Holy **** this guy is incredible. Damn this guy is gone".

niang, long, morris, thomas will all be 4 year players and i am really enjoying them

To pile onto this transfer/4 year player conversation, why does it even matter. Just give me the good players. I don't care how they get here as long as it's not through recruiting violations.
