Percy Gibson

I feel like Fred frequently says that about Percy, Edozie and SDW, but rarely follows through. There are obviously reasons, why Fred doesn't trust these players to play.

As far as I am concerned all 3 of these guys should be getting minutes every game. If they can't get any minutes then all 3 are recruiting busts - right? This is Percy's third year he should be contributing by now. SDW may not be a recruiting bust but seems like he should be getting some time. Edozie being a JC transfer was supposed to be immediate help and nothing.

Percy could have played until he fouled out against UT. Ridley is fat and slow and we just needed a big body to bang with him.

Help me inderstand. Keep in mind, I have been VERY critical of Percy for the last 2 seasons. With that said, he came in during the first half and gave quality minutes. Why on earth did he not see the floor again? Scored, rebounded....
I do t get it.

He also drew the only foul on Ridley until the late second half.

You know things have gone south when we're wondering why Percy isn't getting more minutes.

On average I am all for Edozie and Gibson seeing more minutes to help with foul trouble, rebounding/defense. They were seeing zero minutes, so 5-10 combined in probably good.

In regards to losing yesterday, Gibson playing is not going to help with the TOs. That is the foremost reason we lost. I think we know by now he hurts us on offense in the sense he is average in the post, but does not pass at all and does not maintain spacing. His defense on ball may be a little better, but his team defense is poor. Percy played when we were in foul trouble in the first half, like most want. We lost the lead, but that was expected as Percy is not a "plus" player for us. Had Percy played more minutes, I doubt the team is in better position to win.

I'd be more tempted to go smaller yesterday than play Gibson many more minutes. We have the size of small ball, but only 1 primary ball handler, only two guards, and not enough perimeter shooters. IRRC, our run against Baylor came when we had MM, Kane, and Naz in.

Besides trying different combos of pieces, we need to admit that we need more out of some guys. Naz and Thomas need to play like Big 12 guards. Georges needs to rebound better. I would say Ejim and Georges need to play better defense, but short of the refs thinking they play for KU, I am not sure they would be allowed to.

SDW got in the game and immediately got called for traveling on a fast break. I don't think he saw the floor after that.

The 2 guard position on our team might be the worst in the Big 12. I'm trying to be objective about it but I just think it is. We really need a slashing scorer at that position next season. If we had Tyrus, Scotty C or even Chris Allen at that position this year we'd probably still be undefeated.

It could be. It was a concern going into the year (there is a reason why Bubu was going to be a starter). When we were small in the past, we had three guys that could handle the ball. I wonder if playing another guard would help them. Share the load type of thing. Imo, if we are going to play Naz and Thomas so many minutes, more of the minutes need to come at the three (on offense) when MM is at the point. If Naz and Thomas cannot beat small-forwards with the dribble, maybe SDW should see some time to develop.

He almost gave up an easy layup before that too. Had no idea where his guy was when he slashed to the hoop. Lucky for us, the guy with the ball didn't see him either. A lot of what I see out of him is trying too hard not to mess up so he plays more. I think he wants to be out there and doesn't quite get it going for whatever reason. Needs more playing time before I can judge too much but at the same time, he has to prove he deserves it.

Completely agree. None of the guys are stepping up beyond just being a 5th guy out there. Thats where I feel Vaughn would be huge for this team next season. The missing link. Monte is really getting better so Point is secure. I think out big guys will be outstanding between Nader, Niang, Hogue and McKay. I think Custer will be very similar to Monte next season so 10-15 minutes a game is a fair expectation. SG is the pivotal spot of need. Hopefully Vaughn see's that and the potential 15+ points a game he would probably get.

We have been hurt by the bigs 3 games in a row. The other team is getting 2nd chance points at a higher clip than in non conference. Percy needs to go be a big body 'which he did' and change the way they play offense defense against the clones. Does not seem we are making good adjustments.

Percy is one of those guys that is decent until he is scouted. My guess is Fred is just using him sparingly until we really need him knowing at best we will get quality minutes out of him once or twice and if Niang and Ejim get in real foul trouble in a really big game we are going to need some actual offense out of him. I expect to see him in spurts with the conference grind flying just under the radar and off scouting reports. That said he has passed and rebounded much better in his minutes than we have seen in the past. He was much better when we had a driving threat like Royce to divert attention leaving him open for a dish. I think Kane can have a similar positive effect on him.

I have always been in Percy Gibson's corner. I do think he has the potential to be a very productive player. I also question why he doesn't get more minutes and think people are too critical of him at times..

Percy averaged around 10 min/gm and 5 ppg as a freshman. If he could match those numbers this year as a junior that would be a huge help.

I honestly think Percy Gibson is a loyal member of Cyclone Nation, and doesn't care about personel statistics, only to see Iowa State get the victory with games as the final buzzer sounds. For that, he should be commended. I also think academics is a major focus with Percy at Iowa State. Probably more so than the game of basketball...

I think Percy has potential too. The one way he can really help himself and our team when his is in there is when the ball goes to him, kick it back out. Why can't or haven't the coaches convinced him of this? This would create so many opportunities for himself. But when he unconsciously just throws it up, it kills us. When 3 guys collapse on him, that means others are open. If he kicks it out, the defense will naturally scatter back to their areas and his guy will relax a little, at that point he can always re-establish position deeper for a better scoring opportunity.

There was only one time where it was even questionable, and even that wasn't really a bad decision. The point of a post player is to get the ball and make a move to get a shot. I think there are a few stupid decisions but everyone only looks at those. He isn't a great player but he is definitely serviceable.

All this talk of Percy's turnovers???? Did you see the other Top5 guys the last few weeks? trunover after turnover.
I guess my big contention is the foul situation and being able to manage that.....it is PAINFUL to watch Hogue and Niang play passively. Once the other team smells blood and they got two or three scorers who have been coached and have their own sense that we will not rebound or hack them, that is when these 10 point runs go on us which have elimnated us from the last three games. The rest of the second half is just sparring. FOUL HARD, I would like to think out team knows that Percy and others are there to back them up. Apparently not though.

Percy is probably our most limited offensive weapon. Really his only ability is to catch the ball down low and chuck up a shot. He has no ability to rebound aggressively, get shots for others, or spread the floor. At least Edozie can rebound.

Since last January ended Percy has played 128 minutes, is 13-36 from the floor with only 23 rebounds.

In 737 career minutes played at Iowa State.... he has 9 assists.

After his first 1.5 years at ISU, he has been a huge let down.

I vehemently disagree with your entire post. From what I had saw last night, he was very aggressive and active down low last night. Only played 5 minutes...

It's sad when Hoiberg is trying to figure out who to throw in there to foul.

Percy's offensive game is atrocious. Lemme guess: gets feed, turns left, throws it up first time. Every time, until the end of time. He is a great defensive body and can block shots, but holy hell his offensive "game" is painful to watch. Shot decent FT's though.

Fred probably would like to but when your team is fighting to stay in the game, it's tough to risk not having your best out there and fall too far back. Obviously I'm not at practice but of the 3 I think Edozie is the least risky to have out there. Percy is slow and just makes too many mistakes and SDW is a liability on defense and doesn't really add anything on offense. I really liked Percy his freshman year and thought he had a good future, but as he's got older, it looks like the weight he's put on has slowed him down. Too many times he just seems to be a little behind the action.
