Fred probably would like to but when your team is fighting to stay in the game, it's tough to risk not having your best out there and fall too far back. Obviously I'm not at practice but of the 3 I think Edozie is the least risky to have out there. Percy is slow and just makes too many mistakes and SDW is a liability on defense and doesn't really add anything on offense. I really liked Percy his freshman year and thought he had a good future, but as he's got older, it looks like the weight he's put on has slowed him down. Too many times he just seems to be a little behind the action.

What was the reason earlier in the year?
Of course we do not trust them right now, and it is no surprise they struggle when they come in. Gibson and SDW have not played more than a handful of consecutive meaningful possessions in nearly two years. The regular guys have bad plays too after all. This is being overly-critical, but it helps development and depth to "give" guys meaningful minutes before they are needed.

SDW got in the game and immediately got called for traveling on a fast break. I don't think he saw the floor after that.

Hoiberg does seem to have the quickest hook for SDW of anyone the team. Been a few games lately where he comes in in the 1st half,gets a quick turnover (one game a charge, yesterday a travel), and gets taken out and never sees the floor again. Not saying its right or wrong, just an observation. Though MT get pulled after a mistake yesterday pretty quick once.

I agree with you to a degree, but those guys were getting more minutes earlier in the year, admittedly more in mop up situations. I do think they have made too many mistakes (usually turnovers) in the limited meaningful minutes they have got though. But we don't see them in practice and maybe Fred thinks they just aren't ready to play much at this level yet. I don't claim to be an expert but after SDW scored 50 points in the cap city league I was anxious to see him play as some posters said he was bigger after his red shirt year and would be a big part of the team this year. I saw him play a couple of times and posted that I didn't think he had the quickness and strength to contribute much, at least not yet. I got flamed pretty good for thinking that, and I may end up being dead wrong and he turns out to be a good player for us. I hope he does. I just trust Edozie more than the other two. But more than that I trust Fred.

You know things have gone south when we're wondering why Percy isn't getting more minutes.

Guess you hit the nail on the head there. I like Percy as much as most do, but I think the only rebound I've seen him get is the one that comes right to him! Its not that hard to understand why he doesn't play much, because we have plenty of intelligent coaches that coach him on a daily basis, plus Doc coming in unbiased and riding his butt, yet things haven't changed much. Its not like they're leaving someone on the bench if they thought they could help us win.

All this talk of Percy's turnovers???? Did you see the other Top5 guys the last few weeks? trunover after turnover.
I guess my big contention is the foul situation and being able to manage that.....it is PAINFUL to watch Hogue and Niang play passively. Once the other team smells blood and they got two or three scorers who have been coached and have their own sense that we will not rebound or hack them, that is when these 10 point runs go on us which have elimnated us from the last three games. The rest of the second half is just sparring. FOUL HARD, I would like to think out team knows that Percy and others are there to back them up. Apparently not though.

That is the hardest part for me, too. Sometimes you'll see them just move out of the way of an offensive player rather than contest the shot.

It's looking more and more like we are just a mediocre three-point shooting team in terms of percentage. What distinguishes ISU from other teams is how many of our threes come from our forwards. Our shooting guards have been less than stellar so far.

Our defense just looks so, so bad. It's almost as if the opposing team has the option of taking the open threes that we give them or just take any shot at all and wait for the rebound to come down, knowing that they'll be able to jump higher than our guys.

I think he got the first half minutes because Fred got a case of "insta-burn" at Georges.

If that didn't happen, Percy gets zero for minutes.

Niang 18 points 6 assists. Ejim 17 points 10 rebounds. Percy can give us some minutes but not that kind of production

My guess is between this, spacing and playing within the offense/how he affects our ability to space it out. The big guys have to be able to pass effectively or it doesn't work.

I honestly think Percy Gibson is a loyal member of Cyclone Nation, and doesn't care about personel statistics, only to see Iowa State get the victory with games as the final buzzer sounds. For that, he should be commended. I also think academics is a major focus with Percy at Iowa State. Probably more so than the game of basketball...

I think Gibson also cares plenty about basketball and the team and is trying the best he can. For some reason, though, it just doesn't seem to be working as well as we (and probably he) hoped.

The biggest problem for guys like Percy, SDW, and even Edozie is that they simply don't play enough. Why do they look so slow, rusty, like they are are pressing too much, or making mistakes? Because they haven't been exposed enough or regularly enough. I'm not calling out Fred here, but the reason they aren't coming in and being productive is because they haven't had any chance to do that so far. What I'm seeing out of guys like Percy and especially SDW is the same thing we all saw from Naz Long last year. We all thought he was terrible and boo-hoo'd him every time he entered the game because of all the mistakes he made. Give these guys a chance. That goes for the coaches as well as the fans.
