Peak Iowa Fan

And the weird thing is I hear it over and over again. It’s not just some subset of stupid Iowa fans, it’s practically systemic. Is there some original source for this remark, and why did anyone who heard this remark think "Yup, that'll show 'em!" Really digs me to the core every time I hear it, mostly because I utterly despise stupid people.

Welcome to the Hive Brain of Hawk fans....

Got to love the logic of some Hawk fans. To them:

Up until the Iowa game, Rhoads is a idiotic, hapless coach. For the Iowa game, however, Rhoads' football fairy god-coach turns him into a Vince Lombardi incarnate which allows him to outcoach a $4 million super coach whose teams get better as the season progresses. Then, after the Iowa game, Rhoads turns back into a poor, raggedy shadow of a football coach.

How can they be sure Rhoads actually outcoached Ferentz? They are far too busy focusing on the officiating and each and every call that is made so they can specifically rant about each one that cost them the game.

Tony's brain was fried too.

Okay, had to look this up.

Most losses (cheating a little since this season is just underway) for Hawks over last 20 years:

12 losses to Ohio State (OSU owns them 12-1, good for the Hawks they don't play every year)

10 losses to Iowa State

10 losses to Northwestern (chance to made it 11 this season)

9 losses to Wisconsin (chance to make it 10 this season and get into double figures with ISU)

8 losses to Michigan

Noticed this in a thread linked from the LOL thread and felt that it deserved its own thread. This is it. This is peak Iowa fan. Their whole fanbase summed up in a single sentence.

Why wasn't it our "Super Bowl" when we lost for 15 straight years? Why is it only our Super Bowl after we win? Why isn't it our Super Bowl after we lose? It all starts with the delusion of grandeur.

Northwestern has never had a more talented football team than Iowa either, just ask any Hawk fan. Anytime Northwestern beats Iowa, it's always because it's their Super Bowl too and that Northwestern just gets fired up a lot more to play Iowa.

Rarely when Iowa loses is it because they just got beat by the better team. A lot of teams have played a lot of Super Bowls against Iowa lately it seems.

Iowa fans can't comprehend not being the best D1 team in the state. It's not even in the question for them. 3 out of 4 is hard to argue with. Two in a row at Kinnick. Had to turn that knife a little bit.

It shouldn't be too difficult. Other than wrestling, they don't have much to hang their hat on.

Wow. They suck. BIG.

Fans may be delusional.

The funny part is it likely originated from the game really being Iowa's superbowl under Hayden Fry. The foundation to him every year was to keep ISU under Iowa. Essentially, you're never going to be the best team in the country if you're not the best team in the state. Then ol' raisinface started going downhill and ISU got Dan, who was interested in the rivalry, and Iowa got Kirk, with his elitist snobbery attitude, who didn't put much emphasis on the game, because in his mind, ISU was below his interest (my extrapolation there). Right in that time frame was when ISU was having absolute crap seasons, but started beating Iowa, and the Iowa fans could only soothe themselves by saying that ISU players cared, and Iowa players didn't because they were so far above ISU.

Thank you. I remember when I was a kid my dad and I would go to these events when the UI coaches would go around the state and have these dinners and speak. Fry used to always say that the ISU game was THE most important game for the reasons you mentioned. He said the most important thing he could do was dominate in-state recruiting and build the fan base by making every kid that grows up in the state to want to play for Iowa. So yes, McCarney carried that approach as well.

Does anyone else think that it's funny that in FB, it's never blamed on the talent, but in MBB (minus Lick), it's always blamed on the talent? FB losses are usually blamed on coaching or refs. There are very few teams in the country that are more talented than iowa. But in MBB, it's usually "Fran needs more talent".

Did anyone notice the rest of the Big 10 teams had a brutal showing in last week end's games. I wonder what the other Big 10 teams are saying is their lack of success.
