Over and back

Actually I saw where one of the sports info guys from ISU tweeted out the rules and you don't have to touch the floor. You only have to cross the plane with all three: two fee and the ball. I haven't been able to go back and look at it, but I would assume he was all the way over(in the air). I'll see if I can find the tweet.

Not to mention, Babb was actually in the frontcourt when he got the ball. Basically there wasn't no way in hell this should have been called. Monte wasnt in the frontcourt yet and when Babb caught it he was in the frontcourt. It was maybe one of the worst calls all year as far as when in the game it was called and how wrong it was
I saw it live but don't have quick access to a replay. Was Babb's foot on the court when he caught it? If not, and he caught it in the air, he would still have backcourt status.

Being a sports information guy from ISU does not make him an official or a rules expert. Unless the rule is different for NCAA and NFHS, which I don't believe this one is, "sports info guy" is incorrect.

EDIT: Confirmed with two college officials. Rule is same for HS and NCAA.

That said, the call was obviously wrong.

IIRC, Babb wasn't established in the frontcourt yet. He left his feet but had not yet landed in the frontcourt. I think the error in the call had to do with Monte's position over Babb's.

It appeared as if his foot came down on the line at midcourt right before or as he was catching the ball. Bang bang play for sure.

It was the wrong call no doubt. But I was surprised by some of the decisions our guards made late in the game in terms of attacking the defense vs picking up the dribble.
Agree. I thought Monte was going to push past the two defenders, not pass to Babb. He still had 3 seconds to get a decent shot... no way Babb would have had time. It worked out though...

Agreed. I think the person I was responding to was of the impression they had missed BOTH ends of the play (passer and receiver). I was saying they only missed the Monte half. Still, 50% right = 100% wrong!

Either way he'd still have backcourt status then.

its stupid to not be able to review that call. whatevs we won, chicken dinner

Its harder to win on the road for so many different reasons other than simple basketball. It is what it is and we have 5 road wins with 6 being our high water mark. Pretty rare air right now for conference play on the road.

I think the worst part of this, other than how obviously it was not over and back, was that the announcers concluded it must be over and back because "the ball did go backwards". WTF? It's not a lateral in football.

The "announcers", and I use that term loosely because they were further away from Lubbock than I was, were awful all night. Mispronouncing Georges and Monte's names, calling for "over the back" among numerous mistakes.

It was hard enough to watch the game because I thought we had so many opportunities to open up a comfortable lead but never did-then these 2 jokers call the game.

Just proud that the guys had what it took to pull it out in the end, because it could have easily slipped away

A live ball is in the front court or back court of the team in control as follows:

a. A ball that is in contact with a player or with the playing court shall be in the back court when either the ball or the player (either player when the ball is touching more than one) is touching the back court. It shall be in the front court when neither the ball nor the player is touching the back court.

b. A ball that is not in contact with a player or the playing court retains the same status as when it was last in contact with a player or the playing court.

c. During a dribble from back court to front court, the ball shall be in the front court when both feet of the dribbler and the ball touch the playing court entirely in the front court.

Sorry, wasn't the sports info director I thought it was. Mistook who said it when I was browsing. Here's the info they posted I was referencing though. Truthfully, I don't know exact referenced document. In my quick browsing the highlighted part would lead you to believe if they're not touching the backcourt it's considered in the front court. But, I see where section c. is the more relevant part about dribbling from back to front. Also, in reading "...both feet of the dribbler AND the ball TOUCH the playing court..." Wouldn't that mean that you could "plant" in the front court without dribbling and pass to the backcourt still?

EDIT: I see where CY88CE11 posted the same rules.

It did work out, but shame on Monte for not just continuing his dribble against that double team. I think Tech would have possibly panicked and fouled him, letting us win the game at the line. As it was, even if the ref did not blow the whistle on the backcourt violation, we only managed to get off a ridiculous prayer at the buzzer.

End of game, sometimes I wish Monte would go into Frank Mason or Jamaal Tinsley mode. Too unselfish at times. Needed a Texas game in KC ending there.

The same announcers (or at least one of them) that didn't think Gray committed his 5th foul when he side-checked Thomas to try and get an offensive rebound that Thomas already had control of...he thought it should've been a jump ball...riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I'm pretty sure Monte traveled, which should have preceded any over and back talk. He jumped in back court and landed one foot in front court before passing. Traveling either way, never should have leapt in the 1st place.
