OT - Cutting Cable

I have a question for streamers. Does anyone actually use the DVR functionality? I've been streaming for a while now and haven't found a use for the DVR. It seems completely useless. Every show I watch is available on demand. All sporting events I watch are available on demand. Am I missing something?

The only thing I use it for with DTVN is Discovery networks because they have had a weird agreement where it might be a couple weeks after a show airs before you can watch on demand. Other than that if I miss a show I just watch it on that network's app.

Same goes for us...we never use the DVR, as the things we would DVR are available on demand. With Sling, the DVR costs extra I believe, so we don't have it added.

I use the DVR for tv shows on local channels and sports games. Some of that content is not available on demand. But yes, most of the content is on demand but nice thing about the DVRs is you can fast forward where some on demand apps won't let you do that.

Thanks for your input. I honestly haven't found a show or sporting event not available on demand. When you say local channels, are your referring to local news or public access?

Local channels like 5, 8, 17 in the DSM area. Basically the local news channels that you can get on an antenna. CBS is one where the DVR is a must so I don't have to purchase CBS all access.

I'm able to get the shows on those channels on demand through my streaming service. I think only local news would be the only thing unavailable. I can get all CBS content that is aired nationally on demand.

I use the DVR function on DTV Now when I can for shows we watch to fast forward through commercials. The commercials on the on-demand apps to seem to be minimal compared to the broadcast, but still, when watching an hour show, its usually 45 minutes worth of content or 20 minutes for a half-hour show. Using the DVR lets us usually get one more program in than we would with commercials.

That is true but usually have to wait a while and you can't get all the most recent episodes as they disappear after awhile.

DVR is included in Hulu Live (50 hours), YTTV(unlimited) and Philo(unlimited), so it hasn't cost us any extra with the combination of streaming services we've used at any given time.

Recording movies is also a plus of the DVR so I don't have to pay to rent them, if they're not hulu or netflix.

I do everything that you do for $85/mo for high speed internet, and DirecTVNow, plus my Netflix. My DTVN has DVR. I'll never go back to cable.

For 150MB download, it will cost me ~$80 + tax here in Houston. I've been impressed with ATTs Direct TV and would consider that, especially for DVR capability, which is a necessity for my habits. Also, of the few network TV shows I did stream, I was required to sit through the commercials as it was prohibited to fast-f . Is that true with most shows??

How much of that data do you use? We have used 1TB of data without cutting the cord. The only thing slightly holding me back, besides being old and not liking change.

What's bizzare is, I have not seen our data usage change when we went to all streaming. It should, but mediacom says my data usage still hovers around 1.5Tb.

We tag shows we watch so they appear in the home menu of youtube.tv, but I am not sure it really matters, I can search and find any episode of anything, or just look on Hulu and it is probably there also. Honestly the only downside I have found is if I want to watch an HBO show right when it is on, I usually have to wait a few hours.

Having tried ChromeCast, Firestick and now the latest Apple TV, I am so frustrated at the prospects of 'cutting cable', that I'm back to paying Comcast $140 / mo.
I never found chord-cutting to be cost effective; I gotta pay for high-speed internet (to the cable company), then pay up to $40 / mo for any streaming service, which means I'm about $20 less than my comcast fee.
I found the cable interface to be the most efficient and fastest for channel surfing and I have a DVR which for my habits is a necessity. for 20-bucks that's worth it.

I hate comcast, but they got me by the balls and i surrender.

The cost benefit is for those who pay for high speed internet already and then pay an additional $100 / month for TV packages. It seems the cable companies jack up the price of Internet only to keep people from switching. For us, we pay roughly $50 per month to the utility company for internet and were paying another $100 to Dish network. The $50 stayed the same and the $100 went to $45.

Also, it's nice to be able to setup a TV on a wall without a car let connection. And, it is month to month, so during them summer we'll drop all but Netflix and save more that way.

Do the streamer DVR's let you "chase" a show you are DVRing? I do that all the time with my TiVo. Tune in 20 minutes late and fast forward through the commercials.

Between 200-400 GB's a month. No gaming or kids. Just two millennials who stream a lot of music, Netflix, The Bachelor, and sports

I use it only to pause live TV on Youtube if I need to pee or get food

I can do that with youtube.tv. Every time you tune into a show it pops up and says start from live or beginning.

Is yours glichy with that too, or is it my setup? We've had times where we're behind and when the program time ends, it'll jump to live or get an error. Real annoying when watching sports.

Never had an issue with that on apple tv or a new samsung tv.
