OT - Cutting Cable

Just an FYI...Sling Orange is going up $5.01 to $25 at the end of this month. Seems to be consistent with what has been mentioned here about some of the other providers. They have added a few channels since we first subscribed to it, but none that really matter much to me...

They're starting to get as bloated as the cable lineups that they were created to replace. I canceled my streaming cable back in March once the tournament was over. Normally I would be looking to sign back up next month right before football starts back up. But I'm giving serious thought to just bypassing it completely this year and just listening to the radio and watching highlights on Twitter.

All I want is college sports. I'll pay for it. But I don't want to pay for a bunch of channels that I'll never turn to. I've already got Netflix and Amazon Prime if I just want to have something on.

I'd just get fire sticks but I don't think YouTube TV works on the since google and amazon are having a tiff.

I got two FireTV sticks for cheap/free and loved them at first. But they lag compared to any of the streaming devices' premier versions. They don't have quite the processing power needed for frequent streaming. I finally moved ours from our main TVs to our ancillary ones due to how much they frustrated me.

Agreed. I have one stick left on a BR TV. FireTV, FireTV cube and PS 4 on the others. The stick isn't bad especially if you get the newest version. Just not as fast as the others.

(Post NBA playoffs until college football) I really only stream for a Cubs games. Living in blackout country blows.

If you record on the Cloud Storage and there is no Video On Demand version you can skip comercials. If there is a VOD version it will replace it (some times within 30 minutes after the show airs. The VOD version you can't skip commericials but they are more like YouTube commericals. If it's really your Cloud DVR version you can skip commercials (easier with a remote like Xbox but on phone you have a +30 seconds button I think).

People who don't like YouTube TV it's usually because of this forcing of the VOD over DVR versions. I watch a lot of sports and older TV shows so it doesn't bother me so much.

So help me understand; when using YouTube TV, what is your Remote Control device - your phone, or tablet ?? If so, that seems really inconvenient for channel surfing.

Depends...we use the Roku remotes and the LG remote that came with the TV. I have never used my phone or tablet as a remote.

That depends on what you're using to stream. If it's a Roku, use the Roku remote. If you're broadcasting from your phone to a Chromecast, you'll change it with your phone. It's the same for any of the TV streaming services.

Great; thanks. I've tried Chromecast and Firestick from Amazon. How is the Roku Remote for channel surfing:
  • does it load programs fast, or take some buffer time?
  • does it have a TV Guide to view current and future times and shows?
  • mute button?
thanks

  • does it load programs fast, or take some buffer time? Usually within a second or two, from what I've seen with 100Mbps service from Mediacom (so, 50 Mbps during peak).
  • does it have a TV Guide to view current and future times and shows? Yes. It's reasonably easy to navigate. Several of them have favorites you can set up to make the Guide more useful to you.
  • mute button? No, use TV/Audio remote
thanks

Awesome thanks; looks like I'll still need 3-remonts; one for the Roku; one for the TV and one for the Soundbar...
I'm coming up on my decision to renew with Comcast, or cut the chord.
I have to admit, it's convenient to surf with the equipment from a cable provider - but use two remotes; one Comcast, one Soundbar..

If I cut the chord, I would still pay about $90 for something like 150 Mbls internet speed. If I add a Roku device, which goes for - what $35 / mo, so I'm nearly at the full Comcast plan rate.
Still, it would be a good feeling to tell Comcast to stuff it.

The Roku (/Apple TV/Fire TV/Chromecast) is just the streaming device. You buy that yourself, then you stream from a live streaming service (PS Vue/Directv Now/YoutubeTV/Hulu Live) for $20-75/month, depending on the provider and package you choose. You'd be around $125/month for everything, but you can cancel whenever and switch packages or just skip live TV for a few months, whatever. I'm going to skip the summer next year because I only use it for live sports, and I get baseball through MLB.tv.

Here's what you're looking at price-wise for a full Roku. There are plenty of device options, but I would advise avoiding the stick versions of any of them for any TV that you'll use frequently.

Just a general comment as I see this thread pop up often. I strongly prefer my Roku over my FireTV. The only thing I prefer about the FireTV is the way the home page is presented. I like the Roku better for everything else. The app layouts are better, it runs smoother, the remote is better. Both are the box variety, no sticks, and the FireTV is the newer model. Still prefer the Roku. I need to buy a fourth box and it will be a Roku.

Yeah I have a 4k apple tv and a few rokus (3 and premiere i think) and much prefer the rokus. Especially the remote, I hate the apple tv remote.

I hear there is a 1 bedroom loft for rent on side of the WOI antenna. You may be able to get it OTA from there.

I installed an amplified antenna in my attic and have no problem pulling WOI. It's pretty much impossible to get with an indoor antenna though.

I have an old AppleTV. Because of the age, it isn't a fair comparison, but I prefer the Roku over it as well.

The Roku remote is simple, but it dominates the others. Headphone jack and TV volume buttons....simple but critical.
