OT - Cutting Cable

For those that say you get locals with dtvnow, do you have to live in a metro area? Just curious if I could get them in NE iowa

In NE Iowa, YouTube.tv does have all four local channels. There are some differences in the overall channel lineup to DTVNow, but the service, interface, and DVR are exceptional. Been using it for several months.

SlingTV users...why are games on FS1 blacked out? For example the PSU Illinois game says content unavailable. I have noticed this on a lot of games this year. I don’t care now but am worried if ISU ever lands on FS1.
The FS1 blackouts on Sling TV are only for B1G home games. When the B1G renegotiated their contracts with ESPN and Fox in 2017 they got a big bump in payouts. Fox renegotiated higher carraige fees with all the other cable, satellite, and OTT providers to recoup the higher payout. Sling TV held their ground and told them to pound sand.

Big12 and Pac12 games are not impacted on FS1. Just games that have a B1G team as the home team. That was why the Texas / Maryland game was blacked out.

FWIW: The blackout did save my FIL the misery / embarrassment of watching the Husker / Michigan game this last weekend. So it does have its perks...

I like that Sling held their ground and denied the little X money for junk. However they should.make it known and why a little more up front.

I used Vue a lot last year, but yeah, the price increases are no good.

If you use your streaming service almost exclusively for access to ISU sports (which I do) then Hulu Live has all "the needed channels" (ESPN + Fox incarnations) for $40, whereas with Vue, you have to go with the 2nd package to get all those channels, which is $50 monthly.

Interface isn't a big deal for me, so I'll go with Hulu for now and save the $10 per month.

When I compare it to what DTV, DIsh, Mediacom, etc would cost to cover Iowa State athletics, I'm still about $100 ahead by streaming Vue. Those receiver fees, HD fees, and DVR fees add up in a real hurry.

Would like to give Youtube TV a try sometime but I have all FireTVs..... wish amazon and google would get their issues worked out.

I might have to try a roku . Having a remove that also controls the TV and a better single sign on feature would be nice.

I have been using YouTube TV since the Super Bowl and have been very happy! My wife and children (young) love it as well. I use Roku or the YouTube TV app on the TV but I agree with you about Amazon and Google!

Oh yeah, Vue is still much cheaper than paying Mediacom / Dish what it takes to get FS1, Fox Sports Net, ESPN U, ESPN News, etc.

I agree on the remotes. I ended up with harmony remotes in all rooms to control Rokus and an AppleTV.

Did a free trial of YouTubeTV when the ISU-Akron game didn't show up on my Mediacom (it was listed but never appeared). Think I'm ready to roll with it and ditch the cable. My cable had gotten outrageous and I should save about 80/mo and net more sports channels than I had before.

I recall a conversation about YouTube TV not having certain Big Ten games due to only having a single Big Ten channel and not the overflow channels. It seems as though YouTube TV has added the Big Ten overflow channels but they will only show up when there are multiple games occurring at the same time. Good to know...might be more useful during basketball season?

I have been using Philo for my base streaming for the past month and like it a lot, best bang for the buck for $16. Unlimited DVR for 30 days. For sports I've been using trials to see if theres another service I can pair it with. Trying hulu live tv right now. I've had no issues with it but the interface is kind of confusing. DTN is good but way more expensive than sling or hulu live for the same sports channels.

During football season I'll be using hulu live or sling going forward ($40/mon) and Philo year round ($16/mon).

Might buy a new 4K roku and try tytv eventually.

What device are you using to stream Philo?

I pulled the trigger on the Roku Ultra (Ethernet connection over WiFi). Life changing difference compared to using the built in apps on my TV. Got last years model at Target for $60. The option to plug in headphones and hear the TV thru the remote while my wife is napping on the couch may save me a future therapy bill(s).

I would classify it as a must have for an cord-cutter. Right now it comes with a 30 days Hulu TV trial and that service is very nice.

Apple TV for comparison is $150 and offers less apps

We have 2 Roku Ultras and 1 Apple TV. I do still like the Apple better since it's a little quicker on the menus, but it's not enough to make it worth the extra money. We got it free from DTvN with a 3 month subscription, but I couldn't imagine paying full retail for one.

I do agree that a wired connection does make for a more consistent viewing experience. We've had no buffering or resolution changes since goong from wireless to wired.

I might have to give the Roku Ultra a try as I’m still using the basic Roku stick I got for free when I signed up with Sling. It tends to freeze up every now and again.
