OT - Cutting Cable

OT: We also have Mediacom. For the first 11 years in our current house, reliability was crap. Last year they ran fiber to our hood and I haven't had a single glitch since, knock on wood.

Fiber.... lucky! Im hoping 5G rolls out soon so I can upgrade over century link.

I have jumped around the last few years. I started with sling a few years back and at the time it was ok but the espn channels really lagged for me. I went to Vue and liked it much better, but went through 2 price increases in a short time. Did Hulu last Fall through Spring and liked the content and the bonus of Hulu's episode library, but as others mentioned the interface was awful to get to the Live TV. I renewed it a few weeks ago and the interface is better but still not great. That said to me still the best bang for the buck. I also can't wait for something to come along that will allow me drop CenturyLink. I have been battling issues with bad connections with them for a couple years and they can't seem to or care to get it figured out. Their customer service has been terrible.

I'm in the same boat. I've never really had many issues with CL besides they cutting off my service after the first year. I'm rarely down with them, only 3-4 times in 5 years but all i can get is 12mbps. I can get mediacom but they were down at least 1-2 days a week for me. So I can get faster speed with less reliability or slower speed with reliability. So far I can stream without many issues but we never have more 1 stream at a time usually. I'm concerned about 2 when I get my basement set up.

5G can't get here fast enough.

That is good to know. I'll probably do a trial of sling and hulu tv and then go from there. Been a while since I tried sling.
FYI: Just in case you were wanting the Discovery Channels when you do the trials. They won't be added to Sling TV until later this year. Not sure when they are being added to Hulu TV.

Good news is that Sling TV has said it won't raise prices with the added channels. I would assume that some will end up in base Orange or Blue package for $25/mo and the rest in one of the $5/mo add ons...

Right. In my first about it, I included that they will be added in December based off of the info I have read.

I'll be curious to do the hulu vs sling. When I tried sling over a year ago, I though ESPN and live games had horrible picture and were slow.

As far as internet, we are lucky in Cedar Falls to have a municipal fiber system. Don't know why more cities don't run their own utilities.

For service, I've tried them all. I'll be sticking with YoutubeTV for the foreseeable future. They have all four local broadcasters in Eastern Iowa and their interface and DVR are the best I've used for both Roku and AppleTV. My only issue is that with NBC, they've started restricting the DVR recordings in leiu of the on-demand versions the day after the show aired. All other channels I have the option of which I wanted to watch. The on-demand you can't skip past commercials. If this continues with more channels, the cloud DVR might end up being a real negative.

You're lucky that it's fiber, not that it's municipal. The fact that it's fiber is what makes it fast and reliable.

We’ve got that ATT fiber here in CBus. It’s blazing. Way better than the CenturyLink fiber in Johnston.

SlingTV users...why are games on FS1 blacked out? For example the PSU Illinois game says content unavailable. I have noticed this on a lot of games this year. I don’t care now but am worried if ISU ever lands on FS1.

Can you log into the foxsportsgo app with sling TV credentials?

That worked! Thanks! I’m still curious why FS1 is blacked out for college football on Sling. I might try calling them
Can you have either blue or orange package, do you only get the access for the channels in your package? Or do you get app access for all of sling?

I have blue and orange so that isn’t an issue. I think it might be just Big10 games but I can’t be sure. I remember not getting the Texas Maryland game as well. I think it is a dispute between Fox and Sling. Hopefully Bog12 is not affected but Foxsports app works

For those that say you get locals with dtvnow, do you have to live in a metro area? Just curious if I could get them in NE iowa

I love PS Vue, but lately there have been rumblings about Sony possibly dropping it, as they've stalled at 800,000 subscribers. That would be a shame since, imo, it's the best streaming service.

Some marketing experts have suggested they made a mistake by keeping "Playstation" in the name, as many people mistakenly assume you must own a Playstation to have the service.

Hulu LiveTV and Sling are getting Discovery channels later this year. Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!

I'll be dropping DTVnow for Hulu live tv when those channels are added around December. i really think Hulu live tv will be one of the best bang for the buck services once those are added. $40/mon with DVR included, some locals (KCCI, Fox 17, ABC), a lot of sports, and hulu's library. Great deal in my book vs DTVnow, TYTV and PS Vue.

I used Vue a lot last year, but yeah, the price increases are no good.

If you use your streaming service almost exclusively for access to ISU sports (which I do) then Hulu Live has all "the needed channels" (ESPN + Fox incarnations) for $40, whereas with Vue, you have to go with the 2nd package to get all those channels, which is $50 monthly.

Interface isn't a big deal for me, so I'll go with Hulu for now and save the $10 per month.
