On Becoming a Hawkeye.

I remember that sink from Iowa basketball camp 25 years ago.

Yeah, I went to Iowa wrestling camps in late 80s and early 90s. I'm sure my dorms would have grossed out a lot of privileged kids.

My freshman Helser dorm at ISU in '97 would have done the same. It was clean but nowhere near what many people would feel comfortable in. In normal circumstances the excitement of living on your own really does wonders to look beyond any of that...but if I had been quarantined there with a duffle bag of stuff I'd have probably been miserable.

You're a student in the dorms this year?

Please share more about what it's like. I have a cousin who just moved into dorms as a freshman.
I’m a returning student living in Freddy Court. I was only back in Ames for about a day, because one of my roommates tested positive and we were all forced to quarantine. I decided to head back home and isolate in my parents’ basement for two weeks instead of staying in Oak-Elm. I ended up testing negative, but it was stupid that the university would let us move in without having our test results.

That is tough, I feel for you. Like you said, it's better than no plan but it doesn't seem efficient either.

Putting sick students away from home for the first time in filthy rooms seems to be their go to plan. Why didn’t they test them moving in? Assuming this is same kid but not sure.

I thought they handled it very well for my daughter. She had to select a specific move in date and time. Her roommates could not select a time within 24 hours of her move in. She was tested immediately upon arriving on campus. Moved in and had test results by next morning (negative). Then her roommates went through same process 24 hours later.

If she would have tested positive, option of moving to a isolation dorm, or returning home. And I am sure the isolation dorm was better quality than what this poor girl suffered.

But really? Testing positive and getting on a bus? wtf? Horrible decision making.

Apparantly the oak elm residents were ordering pizzas and such delivered to their rooms. Some delivery drivers didn’t know the situation and weren’t happy to find out they were handing pizzas to Covid positives. Not sure what their SOP are.

The story is a bit odd. Taking bus home AND having to stay in hotel once back in hometown. I would think family could make arrangements to quarantine her with someone to watch over her.

That said, while taking a bus seems risky it's not like she was radioactive with Covid. If she wore a mask, sat away from people and limited interactions with other people- taking a bus was probably a reasonable choice.

That is what is frustrating. ISU goes through all the effort and expense to execute a good plan, but the students then go out and party with no common sense. Making the entire exercise moot.

JFC... I hope ISU has their sh!t together a lot more than that. Telling her not to call home after she found out she was positive until they figured out what to do? WTF is that? The delusion of superiority really does permeate that whole school.
Sounds like they were handling this like a rape investigation in the athletic department.

If the bus had some sort of ventilation system I would agree, but most buses don't so it is an elevated risk.

Unlike Iowa, ISU tested all the students moving into university housing and had a very well planned out process for moving students to isolation or quarantine housing. It's just another stark example of how the two universities differ dramatically.

Which is great but let's not go overboard on the impact here. You're still talking about something like three-quarters of students who will not be tested upon their return for the fall semester.

hell that sink looks brand spanking new compared to some of the barracks rooms I stayed in. nothing like spending the first 3 hrs in your new room for the next month wiping black mold off of the AC vents, sink, shower and fridge.. but then again if I was paying thousands for the school year for a place to stay I would expect the first dorm room too.

A mask will not prevent the spread of COVID. There is no way she should have gotten on that bus.

The city of Chicago has a two week quarantine for any one from Iowa before being allowed out in public.

Enjoy your visit!!!

She was saying that the only way she could have gotten it was at the ER and states everyone there had a mask on.

The other oddity was, she was obviously sick for a day while she hung with her roommate. They never quarantined her roommate from the sounds of it. The first girl was obviously contagious the whole time since she ran a fever the second day and they say you are contagious a day before symptoms hit.

Ehh first year college students aren't exactly known for being the most rational folks in the world, re: hotel vs bus vs staying. And the article says she did try to get a ZipCar but couldn't and felt the bus was the only option. Would've been turned down by most, if not all, rental car companies due to her age. She's 18, away from home in a new state, and just tested positive for a viral infection that everyone's kinda on edge about. Could the parents have stepped up and got a hotel room for her in IC? Probably.

Would this even be a viral story if UI had been even remotely more prepared than they were for a positive test result, and/or had a clean, sanitary room available in their designated quarantine dorm? Probably not.

Really weird story. Love that UI continues to spread egg all over their face in the news, but this girl's testimony is very odd. Very easy to pinpoint elements that were embellished and very poor decision making. Who's to say this girl wasn't just homesick and jumped at the first chance to be closer to mom and dad again, citing less then ideal quarantine conditions as an excuse?
