*** Official UNI vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

After seeing a couple of egregious calls made against us, I decided to objectively evaluate the reffing.

All-in-all well reffed. BUT the two worst calls were against us.

against ISU good call: had the jersey and prevented release
against ISU bad call: on #55. Defense spun into arm, but was never held. Horrible call.
against UNI good call: False starts are pretty easy to get right
against ISU good call: Good block until unnecessary last twist and throw.
against UNI good call: False starts are pretty easy to get right
against UNI good call: No doubt on facemask
against UNI good call: Unlike the one on us Becht's ball was long gone before the hit.
against ISU good call: False start on wide receiver.
against ISU very bad call: Very bad. Ball was still in QBs hand.
against ISU good call: He hooked when all he needed to do was push. Sad thing is it didn't have a bearing on the play.
against ISU good call: Delay of game.
against UNI good call: Super takedown. Much more obvious than our ST hold two penalties back.

Note: I may have missed some, but these are the ones I was able to pay attention to.

The reffing is fine as long as ISU wins!

Even before the game was in hand, we played a ton of bodies. Probably the most I've to refer to the roster in a long time. Seems like we have freshman and sophs in the depth chart at every spot on defense. Pretty sure 8 or 9 different guys played on the DL in the first quarter.

With the understanding it's only one game here's a bit about the special teams versus last year.

Punting
Tyler Perkins – He is 2nd in the nation in punting average – 53.6 yards
He was 68th last year at 42 yards

Punt Returns
Jaylin Noel – He is 4th in the nation in punt return average - 30.0 yards
Last year there was no Iowa State player in the top 100

Kickoff yardage
Averaged 64.0 yards which would have put them at #10 in the nation for last year

Kickoffs with Touchbacks
3/5 for 60% - Last year Iowa State kicked for touchbacks 24% of the time - And totaling the top 10 kickers from last year they averaged 52%

Field Goals
Chase Contrarez is tied for 1st for the longest field goal of the year so far at 56 yards. Last year? Not so much, with no Iowa State kicker in the top 100.

That was fun. Gotta love scoring our first touchdown of the year off of a pick 6 against UNI. It’s always nice to see the Cyclones cover the spread and win their first game by 3 scores. A week two matchup with Iowa will be big, followed by a road game in Ohio. Of course home games against Oklahoma State, Kansas, TCU, and Texas will all be fun as well.

Of course, I’m talking about the year 2017. Willie Harvey scored our first TD of the year against UNI, and the Clones went on to win 42-24. The road game in Ohio that year was Akron. Of course our conference home games were similar. That year had its ups and downs, but man was it a fun year. The emergence of Kyle Kempt along with huge wins vs Oklahoma, TCU, and the Liberty Bowl vs Memphis were amazing. I would sure take a repeat of that year, but no matter what this year brings I will enjoy the ride.

Probably already posted somewhere but still a great photo.

Great isn't it? And yes, it was in another thread, I think.

Who took this pic, I wonder? This should make the rounds in the media several more times this year!
That's fun.

Bummer that pronunciation of Hamann is "HAY-men," (shwa-e), but we can't have everything. :)
And NOBODY needs to know this! Haha! Ham & Bacon all the way!!

Yes! And while not counting this year out, we could surprise! our immediate future looks very bright.
