I'm not even that upset. The team that hustled and put forth the effort needed to win today.... won.
Nothing irritates me more than watching teams that don't give effort. Teams like that, get what they deserve.
Kudos to Jameel McKay this season.... he's the only one on this team that consistently is giving the kind of effort needed to be the best team you can be. If every guy on this team gave the effort consistently that McKay does, I would have picked us to the Final Four. Instead, I had us losing to Gonzaga in the Sweet Sixteen, but wasn't surprised one bit that we lost today at all.
I love Hoiberg, but he was outcoached again today, and his players are a mirror image of him in that they have no sense of urgency. Well, today, that urgency never did show up, and we lost.
It's aggravating because of how we lost more than anything. If we played really well, and were just beaten by a team that couldn't miss, etc, that's one thing, but we lost today because we didn't care at all and gave no effort. We got destroyed on the glass, and that is all about effort, hustle, and basic fundamentals in blocking out.
UAB got nearly every loose ball. They got nearly every contested rebound. They turned us over numerous times. It was flat out embarrassing, and I hope our guys are embarrassed, if nothing else, just by the lack of effort they gave. They took this win for granted, and for that, they're going home, as they should.
As for next year, we will be a VERY talented team once again, that will have the ability to go as far as they want. Now, whether they learn a lesson from this and give better effort next year, we shall see. I hate to see seniors go, and I will miss Dustin Hogue and Daniel Edozie, but I'm sorry I will not miss BDJ. I think his attitude and his lack of effort rubbed off on this team and destroyed any kind of chemistry we could have had. Go ahead and rip me all you want for saying it, but it's just how I feel. Kane and Ejim did SO much for the team's chemistry that BDJ didn't.
I think this year's team probably was more talented than last year's, but it doesn't surprise me one bit that this team didn't go as far. This group felt entitled and let their success go to their heads. They didn't think they had to show up today to win, and they were wrong and got embarrassed. I just hope it sinks in, and they don't allow it to happen next year.

Don't blame his frustration. Went from being a starter to a guy who gets 5 minutes to prove whether or not he will play the rest of the game no matter how poor the starters do.
I mean Thomas was our only offense in the first half and barely got to play in the second.

I didn't mind the BDJ benching as much because of his attitude. I think I would have benched him too. But not playing Thomas in the 2nd half was just plain stupid.
You give the kid a few minutes in the 1st half to prove himself, and he does just that, and in fact is the only thing we have going for us offensively basically. So then for going out there and being productive, you get benched? I'm sorry, but that is BS.
Didn't sound as if Thomas was too happy before this game, and I can't imagine how he would feel now after being so hot in the 1st half and not getting a chance in the 2nd half? I hope we don't lose him, but I have my worries right now. I'd be ticked if I were Matt.
They looked exhausted out there today but not disappointed just sad they didn't move on and I am sure they are too. Win as a team lose as a team.
As far as BDJ- No matter the issue, that's on Hoiberg. If he couldn't keep him engaged, that's on him. If he was someone who was impossible to handle, he shouldn't have been brought in. I have thought about the whole transfer deal and one transfer not neccesarily working out doesn't mean the whole idea is bad but in hindsight, BDJ was so different than anyone else who has transferred in. BDJ spent 3 years being an alpha dog and one year really being a pure scorer who was forced to create everything on his own due to a bad coach. Compare that to Kane and you see Kane with a much more well rounded statline and even though he scored a lot, he did a lot of other things very well too. Compare him to ROyce and Royce had no other post high school basketball influence. Compare him to Luscious and Allen and neither of them were "the man." You can't bring in a guy like him and play him 5 minutes one night because he starts poorly and 25 the next when he starts a little better. I think it was pretty clear that BDJ pressed to much and I think that was in an effort to gain his minutes because he thinks he'll get the hook right away and I don't really blame him. I think Thomas should get some minutes but he has nowhere near the ability to spark a run like BDJ can.
This isn't some "fire Hoiberg" type of thing but I think it's fair to critique some things. Also, someone on this staff needs to figure out how we're going to defend. This isn't a "this roster isn't built for defense" kind of problem.

Yeah. This is pretty much where I'm at with BDJ; I've praised him when he's played well, if not on here then at least in my own head and to family and friends, but if the reports of these sideline eruptions are true than I would have sat him as well.
They say close to 90% of communication is non-verbal, and when they showed him sitting on the bench with his warm-ups still on looking for all the world like he didn't care that told me all I need to know about him and his character. I'm not going to blame him for the loss today, but honestly he's dead to me as a Cyclone fan.

Sure it is. We had one of the worst rosters for defense. Our best defenders could not be counted on for offense. A bit of the old McD problem- not enough good two-way players.
Why do u think Fred didn't call timeout with a minute left up two? He had 3 timeouts left and after nearly turning it over a few times we end up with an air bank and shot clock violation. Pivotal possession and we were running amok. They come down and hit a 3 to go ahead.

I just saw that quote on the ESPN story, and you know what? I hate to write it, but it actually makes me just a little bit glad the team lost today. Now they'll have six months to finally figure out that if you come out lackadaisical (or start playing that way after you get a 10-point lead in the first 5 minutes of the game), you go home much, much earlier than you're supposed to. If the Texas Tech game didn't hammer that point home enough than nothing would.
