***Official NIU @ ISU Post Game Thread***

JonDMiller, I agree with you on most of your analysis but one thing that stuck out to me was the arm tackling done by the ISU defense. They would have a Northern Illinois player contain but they would still get about 4 or 5 more yards on the play. Tackling has to improve drastically on this young Cyclone defense.

It's tough for me to go too hard on the first game...I think you have to accept some degrees of rust, and this is an area where you see a lot of improvement week one to week two. If you dont then it can be a longer term issue.

I liked the contact Iowa State made, and a lot of the 'missed tackles' I saw at the LOS were due to some interior penetration with an OL trying to make a block, but being ineffective, the ISU player disrupting the intended direction of the play, and funneling the runner into teammates.

That, and I am going to give CPR and Wally more of a benefit of the doubt than I have been this offseason.

The guy complaining about Arnaud in this thread is a Hok fan, and undoubtedly thinks Stanzi is Heisman material...

Do I have a tumor? When did I mention Ricky Stanzi or the Iowa Hawkeyes? I just put in my opinion that AA didn't look like a QB that is going to lead ISU through a ridiculous schedule. Even that said, it's not as if he won't improve. Even that said, I am well within my right to criticize a QB that looked shakey at times against a DII school.

There is some serious paranoia from jdogg, who I suspect is actually a hok fan. See, it's that easy Senator McCarthy

NIU is a D2 school now? I know the MAC sucks, but it took a BIG time demotion this summer I
guess!
i had a friend post on facebook, "congrats to isu for scoring a late touchdown to beat a division 2 team" once i told him niu was a
d1 team that went to a bowl, the post vanished

Solid effort...you get a win against a team you should be able to beat that is not a totally horrid team.

Plenty of good things to hang your hat on and plenty of areas that have room for improvement going forward.

I would like to see us use #88 Franklin more in our offensive package...he appears to be an outstanding player.

Team looked pretty good last night against a good team. A couple dumb mistakes, but hopefully they can be fixed. However their work is cut out for them next week.

Yeah, that poster lost all credibility to me. If it were something like thinking ND State was DIII I'd understand, but anyone that pays ANY kind of attention to college football knows that Northern Illinois is an FBS team.

Nice win. Nice drive to sew it up in the 4th. Less impressed with how they came out from half and how they allowed NIU to catch up with the offense and shut them out for so long in the 2nd. Not as impressed with tackling thier best back and the yards after contact that he got. Not as impressed with the number of very short passes AA threw. Good first game effort though overall against a team that could do well in thier conference.

Mostly pleased with the win, still have some concerns. Pass rush was nowhere to be found, several missed tackles, AA throwing 2 bad balls that were picked. NIU was no cupcake, their RB was as good as advertised though, he will be in the NFL. I'm sure the staff will address these needs and have them ready for the game next week. Who do we play?

Some directional school, not real relevant.

First of all, the REFS sucked. Late flags and no explanation of calls. Where were they from? Bad First game for the Refs.

I was more impressed with the Defense than the Offense. I thought our LB's did a great job. DL actually didn't do too bad. They played adequate but we need more push. Safeties did pretty well as well as the corners. Sandvig did a nice job replacing Sims. I thought Reeves was more solid than Anthony Young. NIU saw something in that second half when they went to the WR that Young was covering for several plays in the third quarter. Young got lucky a few times because the WR had gotten separation deep.

On offense, Arnaud was a bit inconsistent. He forced a few balls. But made some great plays. A-Rob is A-Rob. That's good. Collin Franklin is a weapon. Sed Johnson as well. We have a good group of WR's. Thought they did pretty well. I thought the line played pretty decent for the first game. We consistently moved the ball pretty well. We need to cut down on the penalties and TO's. They were costly.

ST play was adequate to poor. The return teams did a decent job. FG kicking was so-so. But maybe that FG Mahoney missed was just a total breakdown from snap to hold to kick. It was ugly. Punting was worse. WOW. Hate to dump on a guy, but that 18 yarder was an ugly punt. And the wind was at his back. Ugh. We can't have that next week at all.

I pretty much agree across the board. Looks like Mahoney took a half step before the snap and threw off his timing. And, it was a long kick into a little bit of wind, so he probably over-kicked it.

I'm not putting too much on the punter just yet. That was his very first kick, and it was under some pressure due to the game situation.

The defense was great. The offense really needed to take the pressure off them more, but they stepped up anyway.

I'm quoting this just because it's fun to see you two agree across the board.

I also think Stormin hit the nail on the head.
We had a mostly comfortable win, and we have obvious areas for improvement. Probably right about where the coaches want to be. We showed some great potential, but they can easily impress some improvements for next week.

When it comes to Iowa State Football, I think it is safe to say that Cyclone fans are "ALL IN".
