Or he needs a drill we did in HS called "foul me". A guy would drive in for a layup and another guy would intentionally foul him so we would be better prepared for making tough layups. It was rough, but it worked.

or at least try to initiate contact and get fouled. He is too worried about avoiding contact all together.
