Official ISU vs Texas AM Post Game Thread

The reason our defense is poor has little to do with schemes in my opinion. WE DON'T HAVE THE ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN THE BIG 12! WE ARE TOTALLY OUTMANNED. OUR KIDS TRY HARD BUT THEY ARE OVERMATCHED. I'm not a kool aid drinker I'm a football coach. I don't see how anyone can watch us play and not notice that the other teams players are bigger, faster, and stronger than ours. Can this staff turn our program around? Only time will tell. Talk of firing them now is pure lunacy imho. We have a long ways to go and it won't be easy.

Finally, a smart answer.

So you are saying the man who was voted Assistant Coach of the Year as a DC has horrendous schemes? I guess we are sunk then.

Oh, I don't know - was it the schemes at Texas and Auburm - or talented players? Chizik's defense at Texas in his second year wasn't so hot.
Donnie Duncan was the "hot" assistant under Barry Switzer when we hired him too - but he wasn't too great as a head coach.

They do not appear to work in the Big12.....rgw ewceivers just go to an open area and catch a 20 yard pass for four weeks ina row. No arms up to block vision. No thrust. No sacks. Just completions at 80% clip.

This would be the same defense scheme that won him his award. Maybe the personnel isnt there?

They seemed to work when Texas won the national championship. They also worked when Auburn went udefeated. We need more horses.

I think it's more of a personnel issue...which I don't expect him to have solved in 1 true recruiting class...

This is the key. Recruiting. Ames has no mountains, beaches, or big city amenities. If ISU could ever get a coach who can recruit consistent top 25 classes, the fanbase would quickly see the results.

And don't talk about KSU or Rutgers, they are the exception, not the rule.

Going for 4 fieldgoals instead of touchdowns lost the game Anticipate we need to score more.

Maybe we can beat KSU and Colorado. Right now KSU looked good.

ISU has now given up 35, 38, 35 and 49 points in Big 12 games. Our Big 12 opponents have attempted only one FG in four games. Meanwhile we've attempted 10 in the four games. It's not working so I say go for it! We're actually pretty good on 4th down - converting 64% on the season.

I think we have a shot against Colorado. Their QB situation is even worse than our's right now.

I thought the same thing when I watched us against Nebraska. They had us outmanned at almost every position. IMO, the only ISU players that might start at Nebraska are Reggie Stephens, RJ Sumrall, Kurtis Taylor, Jesse Smith and Leonard Johnson.

Still we have the talent on defense to do a heck of a lot better than they have been doing. You can't shut down KU for an entire half without having some talent.

That has to be the worst pass defense I have ever seen played at the collegiate level. As a few others have stated...
1.The safeties are the worst in D-1 football. I watch #20, Hundley I think, get absolutely torched all night long. Smith is not any better. Is that really the best we have to offer? I would have tryouts and see if anyone wanted the job. If not, have students tryout for the team. Yes, I am serious.
2.The D-line is maybe the worst I have seen since I went to school there, in the early 90's Walden era. Just about any D-1 QB can compete 80% of their passes if they have on average, 5 seconds to throw.

Another thread on CF mentions scrapping the zone and playing man. I would be all for trying that. At least then there would be someone actually trying to cover. There were at least 4 plays tonight where the Aggie WR had no one within 10 yards of him.

The offense? It really doesn't matter. You can't beat the Ames JV team if your defense lets them score every time they have the ball.

I want to see a replay of that onside kick.

Although I will say Iowa State is home of some of the best boo-ing I've ever heard at any event...:daydreaming:
I left the game when onside kick happened but after listening to John and Eric I felt you got screwed. I went home and looked at it and a&m didn't touch the ball. As for my thoughts. Somewhere Mac is laughing. People talk about this taking time. The ISU team Mac inherited vs what Gene got is even a debate. Coaches taking over new programs have to succeed by doing a combination of using what you got and putting your style on them. Last year in Gene's first year you have the best QB/WR tandem that ISU will ever have in BM and TB. We saw last year in the Kent State game them got BM to TB to start second half and scored, and then he proceeded to do little of that the rest of the year. I am so tired of this will take time excuse and that we are young. If they are talented enough to play as underclassmen that excuse is BS. Bright side we saw little of that everyone turn their head to the coaches crap. ISU WOMEN's BASKETBALL can't get here soon enough. It's the one sport Pollard hasn't turned to crap!!!!!!!!!

Think of the points given up and ISU hasnt played any of the good teams in the conference yet.

OSU
TEXAS
Texas Tech
Missouri
Oklahoma

I will only say this about the defense:

Just because our offense doesn't throw the ball in the middle of the field does not mean that other teams don't throw in the middle of the field also.

The first two TD's for A$M were deep balls right down the middle of the field. Our defense plays against our offense in practice. How many times have we gone deep down the middle of the field? I can't recall a single instance thus far this year.

We threw two crossing routes all night, I believe, both made nice gains. I just don't understand our aversion to throwing in the middle of the field. And on the other side of the coin, I don't understand our defense's inability to cover the middle of the field.

OH MY GOD!!!!

I can now say I was very foolish at the start of the year. But, time has tought me some things, I feel that ISU as a team has alot of heart. I mean most teams in their position would have given up. But they don't and I respect that. But OH MY GOD the coaching staff(mostly the defense) is calling high school type defense schemes. Where is the hiden coverages and blitzes. I don't like to call a coach out but what the hell are you doing. When an AM player calls where he is going to catch a ball. I would think you can see that from where your at in the press box. He did not once or twice but three damn times. I mean OH MY GOD!
And now on to the Big XII officals! What the was that crap on the onside kick. I mean OH MY GOD, for christ sakes when a twelve year old kid can tell that an Aggie player touch the ball and that we got it where in the hell does the review come in. I have see some shotty officiating in my time but that toke the cake. I can now say the Big XII has the worst and I mean the worst officals in all of college football!
So to all you fans thanks for letting me blow off some steam & I'm never going to give up on the cyclones I love this school & it's teams way to much! GO CYCLONES!

Ok, Missouri, Texas Tech, Kansas. If that is not good enough for you, Baylor. What do they have to offer? I have been to Lubbock- not much going on there.

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I'm too lazy to search back through this thread. Amazingly, this was the fewest points Texas A&M has allowed in conference play.

Well, I'm back from the game. I don't really have much to say.

I remember when I predicted us to go 3-0 vs. 1st Year Coaches in the Big 12.

lulz. I figured we'd go at least 2-1 against them. Unfortunately, I forgot that we're Iowa State, and we make all struggling programs look good.
