*** Official IOWA STATE vs #11 Oklahoma Game(Day) Thread ***

I'll have to re-watch the game because I watched while doing other things. Disappointed in the loss, but betting OU in Norman wasn't going to be easy. But I felt we played well and the effort was there, but a couple things stand out:
  1. OU got open 3's and made them (10-25). We missed ours, shooting 3-16.
  2. The Clones execution on offense was pretty bad the last 4 minutes. We shot 2-9 and the only baskets were Ward's put back and Paveletzke's drive with 15 seconds left.
  3. We saw the difference between P5 teams and mid-majors:
    • On offense, when our guards get by their defender, there will be 1-2 opponents at the basket contesting layups. Our guards have to be willing mid-range jump shooters. Felt we really struggled with this the first 10-12 minutes of game.
    • Big12 teams have played ISU enough to know that weak side jumper shooters will be open if the ball is reversed. OU either got open jump shots or were able to ball fake drive to basket.
Houston will be a tough game on Tuesday, but 2 straight in Hilton might be what these team needs on offense.

It was also nice to see Watson get some run tonight. His defense and athleticism gives the Clones some energy.

We didn't shoot the ball well the entire night, playing the #11 ranked team on the road, and we had a lead with 4 minutes left, and it was still within 5 points with one minute left in the game.
We need to upgrade our out of conference schedule, but I am not going to get down with an 8-point loss in the first conference game on the road.

I hope the staff can wean themselves off the excessive double-teaming. I think a good number of the Big-12 teams are going to make ISU pay for it, like OU did.

Imo they started to pick away at it last year.

Keep calm, skip pass and cast away.

Other bummer here is....there are only 3 or 4 realistically winnable road games, and this was one of them.
TCU, UCF, Texas, Cincinnati, and Kansas State are all Cyclone away games, and all those teams are sub-30 in KenPom. OU is now 20, they were around 22 before the game. This wasn't in the top half of winnable away games for ISU.

Yes...they way over rotated.
Am I silly to think that we don't have to ONLY score off of turnovers and runouts this year? If we didn't double every time down the floor, we could hit them by surprise every time. When you get used to a particular thing that will be hitting you, you know how to counter it and, in the past, we were able to cover up after a quick reversal, but we don't have that kind of skill right now (I think we showed that.) we need to double on like 30% of the D possessions and play more straight up help on the other 70%. Maybe I'm wrong, just seems we don't HAVE to get turnovers to score this year.

Not to mention it seems like we’ve always played poorly down there.

I don’t know if it’s Omaha being a non factor or what but this team and season has been extremely meh to me
Um, it's the first conference game? OK is pretty good.

Don't give up just yet. Haha.

I don't know either but I was hoping with an overall upgrade in athleticism that ISU wouldn't need to be make every possession a hornets' nest and could just D up a bit.
