****Official Class Of 2024 Recruiting Thread****

Maybe I'm stirring the pot too much, but aren't you limiting your options considerably if you have a player that can't (or doesn't need to} score--you know, like the premise of the game?

I am saying that he don't need to score that much. It's like Tamin. He didn't need to make three's but he had to be a threat from 3. That is the difference between this year and last year for him. Rock does not need to be a big scorer, he just needs to be good enough they have to respect his scoring ability down low. The guards next year will be the top guards in the conference in my opinion.

Yea, in his 3 years TJ hasn't really shown an offense that runs through it's low post player. If Rock is going to play 15+ minutes next year, it will be because he can defend the paint, block shots, rebound, screen on the PNR and get hustle baskets around the basket. If he has any kind of low post move, he could play 25+ mpg.

A physcial 7' in the paint would be nice.

Maybe I'm stirring the pot too much, but aren't you limiting your options considerably if you have a player that can't (or doesn't need to} score--you know, like the premise of the game? how many times do we seem to be playing 4 on 5 when a sub has a weakness the opposition doesn't have to account for, ie: a wing or guard that can't shoot a three doesn't need to be guarded there so the defense packs it in tighter. Agreed, if every player could do all things at every position you'd be nearly unstoppable but why limit yourself from the start?
Well, if you have a guy that's offensively limited it's best to be a big that can hang around the rim for put backs. Still has to be guarded.

I bet we add an experienced starting level center who's currently playing well at a mid major. Think an Osun or Hason Ward type not Hunter Dickinson or Graham Ike.

AND we also add a forward who is more of a physical player to pair with Milan. Ideally Omaha figures it out and can play that Tre King role but tbd. I think we bring someone in regardless of what Omaha decides for his future.
I think everyone is underestimating how big of a jump Watson is going to take. He's going to play a major role next season.

Hope so, he works his butt off on defense. He's fun to watch.

But Watson's minutes in 2024/25 might be contingent on how his offense develops over the summer. IMO a coach can play 1 non-threat on offense if he is a great defender. But it gets tougher if there are 2 non-threats on the court simultaneously.

Watson seems like a combo 3/4 player. If his offense remains limited, his minutes might be capped by how good our 5 is on offense.

I agree. He is really going to have to work on his offensive game to make a big leap.

I'm curious what kinds of evolutions we'll see in play style (especially offensively) moving forward. If Rock develops, he can be by far the most offensively skilled post that TJ has had at Iowa State. If MM doesn't leave early, he'll be capable of being the centerpiece of the offense in a way that he couldn't be this year because of the freshman adjustment. With the entire backcourt potentially returning next season and getting added to with Indrusaitis and Pierce (plus Hamilton off redshirt), I think it's possible that MM plays more at the 4 next season. If that results in an MM/Rock frontcourt sometimes, that probably means some 5-out offense which can open up huge driving lanes for Lipsey and Gilbert.

Thinking about that also just makes me think about how easy of a recruiting pitch it should be to an athletic post who can protect the paint and clean up the glass. Obviously that pitch has to compete with other schools' NIL dollars, but I'm confident that Otz and company can find a great fit.

That sounds all well and good but have you run this by ZRF yet?

I need to enjoy the success of this season. But next year could be really special if our key people return. A starting lineup with Lipsey, Gilbert, C Jones, Momcilovic and ???? would be reason for crazy optimism.

Then it's a matter if the staff feels Watson, Paveletzke, Biliew & Rock can make the leap. The first 3 guys all have great tools to work with, but in Matt Campbell vernacular- "Can the hone their craft?". Then any contribution from Hamilton, Fish, Pierce and Indrusaitis is upside.

Anyone have any updates how our redshirts are looking in practice?

We probably need to bring in two transfer posts correct? Who on the current roster won't be here next year? The only candidates seem to be Watson and Biliew.
