***OFFICIAL BIG 12 EXPANSION THREAD 2.0***

Wait. What? I clearly missed something. Although, that "something" is probably nothing more than horse-**** speculation, so I'm not sure why I'm even asking.

Just rumors starting to circulate that Texas is talking with the B1G.

We just need the ACC to die, and the B12 pick up whoever the SEC/B1G don't want and then it will be done with for good.

These rumors, which had died down for only a short time after the GOR was signed, are a big reason why I want to see the Big 12 expand. Not because I feel we need to expand to survive some scary unknown future dominated by megaconferences. But because expansion beyond 10, in my opinion, demonstrates a true commitment to the future if all existing members vote to expand. (Yes, I still have my doubts that a school couldn't lawyer up and wiggle out of the full penalty that would come under the GOR.)

Pulling in WVU and TCU doesn't do anything for me as that was nothing more than short-term survival. My understanding is that we needed to maintain at least 10 members to avoid voiding our media rights contracts. Vote to expand beyond 10, then I'll be truly comfortable about our future.

Hey, granting of broadcast rights to the league would stop UT. You all said it. Or was that yesterday's take?

I'm going to just start a Twitter account and make crap up and see how many people I can get to start posting it as "rumors" and "smoke" from "sources".

Texas to the Big East.

Why would Texas go to the B1G when they would have to give up the LHN? That would make no sense. It is all ******** until it happens as far as I am concerned.

Now, I personally don’t believe that the Big East will lose anyone else to the MWC (the Big East still seems to be a better value proposition for the Texas-based schools), but perception of who is weak or strong can change pretty quickly in conference realignment. It’s one thing for the Big East to be losing head-to-head battles with the Big Ten and ACC, yet it’s an entirely different matter when the MWC seems to have more momentum.

Last year, Louisville took in nearly $88,000,000 in athletic revenue. I think that would put them about third in the Big 12 (according to the EADA numbers). And Louisville got that revenue despite being in a conference with a horrible (by today's standards) TV deal. For reference, Kentucky had revenue of nearly $86,000,000, and that being a member of the SEC.

For a school of 12,000 undergrads, either Louisville has one enormously rich alumni base, or they have a much larger national fan base and following than you give them credit for.

...or they are counting revenues that aren't a direct result of UL athletics (e.g. ancillary YUM Center revenues).

Louisville does have some cache as a MBB national brand but they don't add sufficient TV value for FB to justify the B12 adding them which is exactly why they heading to the ACC. They are the first commuter school in the ACC which should tell you how desperate the ACC is.

I've never had a belief that a contract, or GOR, or whatever other name you call it could keep a conference together.

Bottom line is that if OU/Texas wanted to get out, and 4 other teams had landing spots in the other major conferences, this thing could implode.

I don't think that's likely to happen, as I think we'll have the upper hand in the fight for survival between the ACC and B12, but I do think it's possible.

Either the ACC or B12 will eventually go down in flames if the B1G and SEC want 16 or more.

Instead of expanding what I wish the Big 12 would do is go out and make a deal with the ACC/SEC/Big 10 and Pac 12. Tell them we will go to four superconferences of 16 and dissolve the Big 12 if they take all 10 teams in our league and split them up into those four conferences. Currently it would take those conferences 10 more teams to each get to 16. The Pac needs 4, the ACC needs 2, the Big Ten needs 2, and the SEC needs 2. Doing this assures all of our members long term stability and it locks out UConn, Cincinnati, BYU etc instead of KSU/ISU/Baylor should the Big 12 dissolve further down the line.

We will make sure KU and OU go to SEC. OSU, TT, Baylor and TCU to PAC 12. UT and ISU to BIG and WVU and KSU to ACC.

What? That is the role of the ACC.

Besides, KSU, KU, ISU and Baylor would all be in a BCS conference if the Big 12 were to dissolve further down the line.

I actually really like this completely implausible fantasy. Us and KU to the BoneG, Texas and WV to the ACC, OU and K-State to SEC, Tech+OKState+Baylor+TCU to PAC. If the PAC wants to screw one of Baylor and TCU and take BYU instead, it's cool by me.

Louisville has the highest revenue producing men's basketball program in the nation.

Part of the reason the expansion rumour have died a bit is because everyones kinda waiting for the Maryland lawsuit to be decided

They won't be when they have to start paying for the Yum Center which is hemorrhaging money.

I always love when people try to make this point as if it matters. Not only does no one care how much money the athletic department is claiming (AD's have a lot of freedom in how they disclose their books), it legitimately holds exactly zero weight.

Louisville posting those numbers all over the place is nothing more than putting lipstick on a pig.
