This is all about ND. Once they commit the other pieces will fall. If they do not, there will be unrest in the ACC, and it will leave open the possibility for defections.

if ND joins ACC, it is stable, and B12 is in trouble. if it joins B1G, they are done, and ACC is picked apart.

The only reason Notre Dame would go full membership ACC over B1G is spite. But you're correct in how it will happen and we've seen schools make conference decisions based on spite already.

Wish the guy could have named the "non western" Big East schools the MWC was talking with.

With BSU going back, that league could be strong in football again with BYU/Houston/SMU in the fold. Nevada has been a solid program for quite a while now. Memphis along with one of the Texas schools would be an interesting move too, the league has been flirting with "major" in hoops lately and Memphis would definitely put them over the edge. It would just depend if Memphis thinks their east coast recruiting presence is totally shot with CUSA or Big East leftovers, you know they had to be salivating at getting into the previous Big East as it was with NYC, Philly, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc for basketball recruiting...

As long as ND football has access to the playoff without having to join a conference they won't join one. Until their special negotiating privileges that puts the one school on equal footing of an entire conference they have no incentive to do so. Pull the plug on their special privileges and they'll join a conference - but I agree it won't be the Big 10.

If we're talking about full equal membership why ACC over B1G assuming both are happy to add them at a moment's notice?

Oh, the Big 10 clearly wants Notre Dame. I think they're the whole reason why they haven't gone to 16 yet - one last chance. ND just wants nothing to do with the Big 10 because of old grudges.

Notre Dame playing for a National Championship this year is all the reasoning they need to never (at least in the foreseeable future) join a conference. I see all of the conferences moving on without them.

Exactly, the best thing that could have happened would have been to see ND be undefeated and left out of the NC, that may have been a bit of a reality check, but sadly the way This year turned out only cements their independent status

I wouldn't be shocked that if Maryland doesn't have to pay the whole 50 million that your going to see a bunch of movement very quickly. i think the B1G may just add 1 right away especially if the Big 12 goes and adds 2 ACC schools just to give ND 1 final chance before adding their 2nd school and going to 16 with the SEC in tow

ND's undefeated season has nothing to do with it.

Prior to the end of ND's season, the NCAA President's Committee had already approved the new 4-team playoff format and bowl system that permitted ND and the Group of Five conferences (BE, MWC, Sun Belt, MAC and WAC) access to the new playoff and bowl system.

ND has access to the playoff and bowls for the next 12-13 years as an indy so they won't join a conference for that reason.

What may prompt them to join a conference as a full member is to find an acceptable home for their non-FB sports if the ACC blows up. They likely will not join the ACC as a partial member if it blows up. They would then join the Cathlolic 7 conference as a partial member or join the B10 or B12 as full members. If ESPN does not sweeten the money pot for the ACC, my money is on ND joining the Catholic 7 in order to remain an indy in FB.

Im just not sure that the ACC will blow up unless the Big 12 goes to 16. The reason is if the b1G and SEC go to 16 and take 4 ACC teams that will put the ACC at 11 teams. They then add Cincy and UCONN and they are back to 14 for everything but football. Even if the Big 12 takes clemson and fsu that still leaves them with 12 and they can add South Florida to get to 12 in FB. But if the big 12 were to go to 16 that means 4 more ACC likely schools which would then make it hard for the ACC to be relevent

You're right, the ACC probably will not "blow up"...but they'll be left to Big East status, out of the big 4.

Agree, but it is surprising to learn there are a vocal minority that really dislike the SEC and Slive. Guess it isn't all roses like they would have us believe.

actually evidence that the more teams you add, the more teams that can be upset they aren't winning enough. The TV stations would love USC, Texas, OU, Mich, OSU, Florida, Alabama, etc. all in one conference...but, only 1 or 2 of them would be happy...just like every conference now. You are either one of the 2 that is happy, one of the 2 or so that hates it or one of the rest that puts up with it because it is the best option.

When the SEC and B1G go to 16 and i wouldn't be shocked if the announce schools before football next year its going to be very interesting to see what happens especially with the Pac 12 and the Big 12. I think the Big 12 has to get to 12 atleast but if there is basically a 4 conference majority be interesting to see what happens with who gets who

I have heard this line before, and it might be true. But if ND has such a nagging grudge against the big10, why do they keep playing so many big10 schools, and thereby helping the big10?

I agree with ND joining the Catholic 7. They remain Indy in FB and find a great spot for their BB team...not sure about the rest of their non-revenue sports.
