I guess I don't fear competition from others - I would rather base my plans on strategy and confidence in my own abilities. That would be the worst thing to do. If you add 4 more schools, then you have more schools that are now members of a P5 conference that you will compete against if it all blows up. You only expand if there is a GoR extension. If there is no GoR extension, you vote no. And you get KSU, Baylor and TCU to vote the same way.
Yep if it were 1965, this would make a great argument but unfortunately it's all about football performance and TV sets and we don't look so hot there.

The truth hurts.I know this is completely true but I'm not sure what this says about our society that academic profile of a non profit university is at the bottom of the criteria list because the biggest concern is money

This would be concerning if it was up to a vote of society in general. However, the people that make the decisions are academics - university presidents of which 99% of them were college professors with PhDs before moving up the ranks of university administration. If there is one set of people who would defy the preferences of society to place athletic performance over university prestige and the ability to choose who their university's "peer" institutions, it would be university presidents. I'm not too worried about ISU's chances of finding a nice landing spot should the Big 12 explode. It's a different scenario though for KSU, OSU, Baylor, TCU, etc. since they don't have the size or academic prestige.
The academically prestigious Big Ten presidents had the choice between Missouri (who desparately wanted in the Big Ten) and Nebraska, fully knowing that the latter was likely to be booted from the AAU. The academically prestigious Big Ten presidents chose Nebraska...
Pac 12 will not admit a religious university whether it is BYU, TCU or Baylor. It has nothing to do with the school's policies.Eh, TCU is certainly different from BYU in terms of trepidation about the school's policies, so I don't think that's a sure thing. And Texas Tech and TCU are in the same "market" just like Kansas and Iowa State are. That is to say, not at all.
If expansion does happen with the Big 12 falling apart, I don't think every conference will be scrambling to get to 16. The B1G may stand pat at 14, or maybe they do jump to 16 while the SEC stays where there are. The B1G prints money as it is - I very much doubt that Kansas or Iowa State (2/3rds of the AAU schools in the Big 12) are on their mind at all.

Best thing for ISU to do is have a well fan supported competative football team. Having a team that can go 7-8 win seasons on average will go a LONG way if we have to market ourselves to another conference. I know, its a tall order, but I think its achievable.
Personally, the fan support for ISU is a huge plus compared to some other current P5 schools.
For example, Washington State...holy cow. If in 10 years it becomes about eye balls and fans buying a product, ISU becomes more valuable.
If we had a decent football program, I would almost favor a Big 12 implosion because we definitely wouldn't be left out and it isn't as if we have any big rivals in the conference. But we don't have a decent program. We have a historically bad program. I'm still optimistic it will work out for the good guys whether that means a new Big 12 GOR or we land in the Pac 12/Big Ten/Superconference.
Even if Iowa State is guaranteed to land in a 16-team P4 conference, I don't think it's sure or even likely to be better than the Big 12 in my opinion.
The B1G would be - lots of drivable games. But the Pac-12 (Pac-16), ACC, or SEC would be serious downgrades. It would be a bunch of schools that we have no history with and that are a long way away.
My unlikely hope is that the Big 12 blows up, teams are flying around (including Texas to either the SEC or the Pac), and the Big Ten wants to get a quick 16 with AAU schools for whatever reason. A division with Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Kansas would be pretty much ideal. Added bonus: Move the Cy-Hawk Game to the last week of the regular season, the week after Iowa plays Nebraska around Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving would be the last week of the regular season because the following week is the championship game.Even if Iowa State is guaranteed to land in a 16-team P4 conference, I don't think it's sure or even likely to be better than the Big 12 in my opinion.
