Official Apology Thread: Has the rot set in?

What didn’t make sense to me after the Ohio game was exactly this. Why fire the staff, including long time friends, and then do the same **** that they did that got them fired? I was fully expecting the offensive line to look violent, and to see creativity in the playcalling. And it didn’t happen through game 3 and that certainly had me concerned.

I can understand that. And I think it is somewhat valid. I'd counter with a few things:

1. There are some insiders that said Rocco was NOT good in fall camp. I don't think it was just talk that him and JJ were in a real competition. So it wouldn't be crazy that a conservative head coach and a new OC would be very conservative with a player that they were a bit worried about.

2. As gutsy as Rocco was in toughing it out against Ohio, I've got to believe that they didn't think they could do much with him because he was so sick.

3. Campbell's coaching not to lose....I'm convinced that this mainly stems from him wanted to protect his team. I think that's why he spouted off about championships not being the goal in 2021---he didn't want those guys to feel like failures. And I think that's what 75% of his coach speak is about. I think being a run-first team is what he'd prefer, but I think he got paralyzed and went overboard with it because he was trying to protect the team.

4. It think it is silly to think a young, brand new OC is going to have his **** 100% together on day 1. I'm sure Campbell finally let him air things out a bit, but I also think Nate learned and found what his guys could do. I don't understand why we didn't think there would be some growing pains there.

Careful that kind of thinking will get you labeled as a conspiracy theorist whack job by the bots on here. Just take the popular stand drink your ovulatine and you won't be black listed.

You will "tentatively" say you were wrong? In other words, you still reserve the right to say Campbell sucks. Good grief.

I love fans who only want to ride the bandwagon when the road is smooth. There's no doubt that when we hit the next bump in the road, you'll be among the first to jump off.

I never said he sucked. Just that things appeared to have been stagnant. They evolved.

I know it’s crazy, but my opinion on how the coaching staff is doing also evolves with their results.
So in other words, being tied for 1st in the Big XII at the end of October when we were picked in the bottom half preseason just isn't going to cut it, correct?

No, that’s great, clearly.

The Iowa game still happened. The Ohio game still happened. The infuriatingly slow start in September continues to happen.

They evolved. My satisfaction of the staff’s performance evolved too. Great job.

But we have a rough stretch of games coming up and half our recent wins were against lesser opponents.

Hopefully this strategic shift and success continues throughout the rest of the year and , more importantly in my opinion, into next September.

I voted yes so I am here to apologize. All the evidence pointed to Campbell as being very stubborn. But he came out and admitted not once, but twice, they were coaching/playing not to lose and instead of playing to win. That is awesome on his part. I'm still mad at the passive tentative nature he called the Iowa game, we made it so easy for Iowa. Then he said that he was excited we played them tough, or that is the best we have played against them as if they are some sort of juggernaut. I'm not even mad about the Ohio game, we had a lot of guys sick, and if we don't lose that game I'm not certain Campbell decides to change the blocking schemes and open up the playbook and call more aggressive plays on offense. In comes miss direction, new blocking scheme, unconvoluted route trees, down field shots, QB runs, etc.. Before that it was delayed had off zone read, but really not read option for the QB, zone blocking, and routes where almost everyone is at the same depth. So happy for the change, and we are fun to watch!!! Hats off to Campbell and the staff, job well done.

I did not vote, but I was very irate when we were 1-2 . Considering the starting QB, TE, RB, and DT were lost, Campbell has done extremely well so far- especially with so many staff changes. This might be his best season at ISU of doing more with less.
To me, I felt like we were seeing Campbell’s ceiling and deficiencies. The gambling thing to me is a character issue. Enyi and the current players weren’t rogue bad apples. They were starters.

That feels like a coaching/character oversight.

The chronic slow starts, and unwillingness to change. Perhaps it was too hard to have the tough convos with the guts you came up with.

The adjustments have come. Time mgmt has looked better.

To me, if Campbell can ever get Sept figured out (strange that our only 3-0 came in our worst year) we could legitimately see CFP. Not saying we’ll ever be one of the 4 most talented teams.

Who knows.

Gee…can’t follow the convo can you? But being a PITA is your MO
I mean I’m not going to let you gaslight people that you weren’t negative, so it probably is a PITA for you to be held accountable.

**** off. You are being a ****. Capitol C.

I just dont understand why some of you people are so goddamn sensitive to fans criticizing the team or coaches.

Let me help you out… some fans use this site to vent frustration. Deal with it. Not everyone wants to experience ISU athletics and CF exactly the same way you do.

IT IS ALRIGHT TO CRITICIZE THE TEAM AND COACHES.

Again… **** off.
It’s amazing how sensitive the negative fans are when they called out for their horrible takes. Just own it or alternatively don’t act like a 4 year old.

And you had determined that Campbell should be fired. His time at Iowa State was over.

You were so wrong. It is fair to criticize your judgement. You would have made the single worst decision in Iowa State Football History by firing Campbell.

So your answer is yes, it isn't going to cut it?

And I never get the 'but our wins are against lesser opponents' argument. Isn't that the point? CMC has made this team better so there ARE lesser opponents. What will we say if the day comes that we are the top of the Big XII heap and all the opponents are lesser? The wins don't matter?

Listen, I get it. I was as down as anyone after the Ohio game. My dog was nervous for a week.

The loss and the way we lost was a concern. But we all knew this team was young, there was off season turmoil and CMC plays the long game. I don't pretend to know how to build a competitive P5 team but it seems to be CMC is patient and willing to take some early lumps to be there when it matters.

I suppose I am overreacting to the naysayers as much as some were over reacting to a start which, while disappointing, wasn't a complete shock.

I do think CMC has earned a LONG leash though, we are miles from considering what would drive him out or to saying the program has faltered.

I've watched a lot of ISU teams over the years that would've blown yesterday's game.

It's true our schedule toughens up in November, but we demand we "beat the teams we should" and then get mad when we do?

Probably a good thing to have this stretch before November to keep giving the guys some confidence.

when game outcomes get rough, there are 2 types of posters on CF.

there are people that like to vent their frustrations by complaining and conversing about bad calls, bad officials, bad coaching, and bad playing.

and then there are these miserable ***** that like to vent their frustration by complaining and conversing about the people who are complaining and conversing about these afore mentioned topics. They insert themselves into conversations and add fuel to an already tense situation, by being self righteous *****.

Remember when everybody was crapping on the Okie St loss? Just another case of overreaction to one game and for some reason our fans listening to Hawkeye fans.

ISU does not have a great win. But ISU is playing well and has everything in front of them. Night game at Trice vs KU. Things are good.
We beat Oklahoma State. The loss to Ohio was an absolutely horrible performance on the heels of yet another loss to a mediocre Iowa team. They have 100% turned things around in every way. I really thought this team sucked ass after Ohio. Glad to be 100% wrong.

You went one step further. You said Campbell should be FIRED. The rot had set in. Don’t wait. Just get it over. You had seen enough. That’s a far cry from criticizing a coach or allowing a new offensive staff some time to correct things.

You no longer wanted Matt Campbell as Head Coach. Dumbest decision ever. Your judgement is beyond terrible.

The gambling is happening everywhere. Everywhere. If the States of Alabama and Georgia had the Iowa DCI, would the coaching/character be the same? No.

post a link then please. i voted and didnt post a comment in either of Gunners rot threads.

Please leave your apology below for all of those of you who voted yes.

Just a simple, wow I was very wrong and not very bright will suffice.

K thx.
Call out threads are so f@cking dumb… It’s a fan board. You do understand that ISU could easily lose out and not get a bowl based on an embarrassing loss to Ohio, right? I didn’t vote, but those who voted “yes” aren’t stupid or bad fans. They’re just not cool with losing games ISU has no business losing. Accepting garbage football doesn’t make you a good fan.

I agree w this. The on thing that really seems confusing is how the o-line sucked so bad then have radically improved in this stretch. It doesn't compute for me.
