***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Ross will be back but the leash will be pretty short early next year.

Yammamoto for a rotation of Steele, Yammamoto, Stroman, Wicks, Taillion. They will choose to decline Hendricks option after Stroman opts in. Cade Horton is up by July after he annihilates AAA.

Re-sign Bellinger and figure out 3rd base even if it's a one year deal with somebody while you wait for Matt Shaw.
I just don’t see a world where the Cubs cut ties with Hendricks solely because you can’t find a pitcher in the MLB with his experience, leadership, and stats for $16 million.

If anything, they’ll take the option and trade him.

I could see a world where, because you have Wesneski and Assad, they go with a 6 man rotation and those 2 rotate/piggyback to eat innings and throw eat 12 innings a week. To me it would make sense.

Yommamoto/NPL always runs a 6 man rotation. Hendricks/Stroman bodies don’t let them them throw as much. Steele clearly is worn down. And it’ll let you ease Wicks in.

Here's my current roster breakdown for next year

Steele, obvious return
Stroman, he'll take the option for next year
Hendricks, yes at minimum insurance
Taillon, got some work to do but he'll be here
Wicks, probably up and down next year.

Smyly, I think a bottom feeder would take him at a reduced price.
Wesneski, I see him getting a bigger role
Assad, perfect long relief / spot starter
Brown, should be in the mix here

Fulmer, FA won't resign
Palencia, to talented to give up on AAA.
Cuas, doubt he makes the 40.

Little, going to be a high leverage contributor
Boxberger, helps deepen our back of the rotation
Merryweather, stays as prime set up guy
Leiter, hopefully comes back rejuvenated
Alzolay, just get healthy

If we can get back to healthy this group should be deeper and won't wear down. Add an ace (Yamamoto) and a lefty reliever ((Hader)

As for in the field, resign Bellinger, replace the end of the bench with prospects.

C Gomes Amaya
1B/CF Bellinger, PCA, Mervis
2B/SS Hoerner Swanson, Morel (should get 20 starts)
3B Madrigal, Morel (Shaw is coming)
LF/RF Happ,Suzuki, Canario

Leaves one spot either Tauchman or a cheap vet to play some 3rd.
My only concern is this team has shown they are not a championship-level team, and this is just running it back except with not-yet-proven prospects and an ace. And Hader.

Dusty didn't help but it was the freak line drive off the point of the elbow that was the end of Mark Prior.
I always thought this base running collision also played a factor into his arm health as he never seemed quite right after that. Dusty just worked Wood and Prior like rented mules and did neither of them a favor. Would have loved to see what could have been had those 2 guys been able to stay healthy as they were so dominant when they were on.

I’m also all for signing Shohei to be DH and then create an incentives-based deal for the pitching side of things for 2025 and beyond.

I would love to have a chain of Hoerner/Shohei/Belli/Suzuki.

Just now getting around to looking at Matt Shaw’s accomplishments as a Smokie. Since his promotion August 30th, he has had just 2 games where he didn’t get on base, and in those two games he still managed to get an RBI and score a run.

I’m still a bit hopeful Brennan Davis can be an option at the bench, at a minimum, someday. Since coming back from his injury in Iowa, he’s got 11 hits in 14 games and 21 Ks. Did have the game winning hit in last nights win, though

You would have had 5 years of Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Clement.

All you had to do was be competent offensively and you win 2 or 3 titles.

Got to be f'ing kidding me Ross! How the hell does Young get a start at DH over Canario? Rediculous, just lost a series to the Pirates and still refuses to try PCA and Canario yet Young who just got called up the other day gets to be thrown right into the mix?

Mike Tauchman, CF
Nico Hoerner, 2B
Ian Happ, LF
Cody Belinger, 1B
Dansby Swanson, SS
Seiya Suzuki, RF
Jared Young, DH
Miles Mastrobuoni, 3B
Miguel Amaya, C

I.... I can't even. There is literally no justifiable reason to start Jared Young over Canario. All I can think of is Ol' Rossy is quiet quitting. I'm also working on a theory that Ross booked a really expensive non-refundable vacation back in June when we were way out of it or something.

That's all I've got.

I'm sure it's the "playing the analytics/splits" crap because there is a RHP on the mound and Young is a lefty. Well so is PCA and he's far more valuable defensively if you wanted to play him in CF and DH Tauchman. Hard to believe Young's 55 career AB is enough to say he's clearly the better option. He's only hit .152 in 33 AB this year against LHP too so would rather take my chances with Canario even if it a right vs right matchup as all 5 of his AB so far have been against RHP and didn't stop him from hitting a grand slam

Wicks has already regressed a bit. Ks after the first start aren't there. I think he's a solid depth guy but we have better options coming through the pipeline. (Horton, Brown)

Ok, ive never been one to complain about lineups because I know guys need rest, but to have Young and MasterBoney in the lineup is coaching malpractice.

It's 1000% the Righty/Left matchup, whether it's Ross or the FO, they absolutely FORCE it unless you are Nico, Bellinger, or Swanson. Those seem to be the only three on the entire team who are allowed to face pitches that throw from the same side as they bat. It is maddening.
