***Official 2021 Vikings***

No team is going to trade for 1 year of Cousins anyway. An extension will be required no matter what.
Exactly. He's got a defacto no trade clause because of the situation. Even if Carolina was offering their next 3 1st round picks, if Cousins said he wouldn't sign an extension, the deal wouldn't get done. Depending on how obstinate he wants to be, he can effectively force Minnesota to keep him this year and become a free agent I'm 2023. He knows they're not going to franchise him next year.

I'm torn on whether this makes him a douche or a smart guy that knows in the end he has to do for himself because others don't really care. This one year is such huge money it may be worth it even if he was done after! Not sure how the dynamic plays out with the team, though. Could be messy.

I think he's both. Cousins has continually bet on himself and bucked the status quo when it comes to contracts. He's been very smart about maximizing his profitability, and as a result has made more money than many other players who have been better than him on the field. He knows the value of his position and isn't afraid to flex his muscles to get the best deal for himself. That's smart. Good business.
But in a team sport, it doesn't always cast him in the best light and I think even his biggest fans would admit that.

Cousins is not a leader, or one who will negotiate to help the team win. It's all about the money, and Kirk winning.
Can't say I blame him, but I'll be glad when he moves on. The Vikes win never win with him at QB.

It's both. Practically the only guy ever worth a ton that chose willingly to be "team-friendly" is Brady. That said, Cousins values himself in the Brady/Rodgers/Mahomes-tier of QBs without the actual results on the field...but he keeps getting away with it and getting paid for it. That's not his fault.

Ohio State QB's always seem to underachieve in the NFL. I'll pass on Stroud as of now. Maybe he will be good, who knows? Fields isn't exactly killing it in Chicago.
QBs from elite programs in general are a risk IMHO.

Supposedly lowers this year's cap hit by $10-15 million. That alone gets them below the cap.
Was afraid the Vikes would do this to free up cap, but most disappointing is the no trade clause. Two more seasons of watching uninspiring QB play.
