***Official 2017 Transfer Thread***

Holden was on scholarship, no? Unless you think the staff is so poor at recruiting that a bad CUSA player like Holden was the very best we could have done, Holden had an opportunity cost. Leaving it open would have arguably been better for the program.
What would the advantage had been with an open scholarship and no Holden?

It would have been irresponsible for the staff to knowing go into the season with what there was for front court players.

I would have been fine getting Young ready faster by going with him on Day 1 and Bowie as the backup, which would also allow them to try and get a mid year transfer

I don't see how anyone could consider Holden or Bowie busts, as for opportunity cost who exactly was the post player we lost out on by bringing them in.

Prohm knew he had offense but someone to defend the post was no where to be found. We needed all three he brought in.

This year we have PFs and we'll likely get more production as well, but we have no one you'd consider a stretch 4. Hopefully we hit a homer and sign Juiston, regardless I think we'll add a grad transfer at the position as well.

If we add two backcourt players as well I'm guessing one of those will be a grad transfer also. Opportunity costs avoided, three scholarships available for 2018 even w/o attrition.

Opportunity cost. Imo if the measure needed to be above a bust is an open scholarship, the player is a bust.

I think we could have landed a better post than Heston. While the we want Heston chant was fun, a better post may have helped.

In hindsight that probably would have worked out ok, but last May we had just lost Malou, nobody was sure about Lard, and only had Fr Young, and an undersized Bowie and Burton needs frontcourt. Not exactly much confidence in that group, especially when you're trying to go all in with a high quality backcourt.

Look at it this way, if Holden would have just been a serviceable big the whole year, then Iowa St would have finished solo second in the Big 12 and a 3 seed in the tournament. He was well worth the chance, and I hope Prohm tries again to get a grad transfer in the front court.

Mid year transfers of note they could've offered. I'm fully aware these players would not have been eligible for the 2016-17 season like Holden was.
  • Sam Cunliffe 6-6 Guard from Arizona State. Averaged 9.5 ppg and 4.8 rebounds per game. Former top 40 HS recruit.
  • Yankuba Sima 6-11 center from St Johns. Averaged 7.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg
  • Isaac Copeland 6-9 forward from Georgetown. Averaged 8.6 ppg and 4.5 rpg.
  • Jahmal McMurray. 6-1 SG from South Florida. Averaged 15.6 ppg 2.8 rpg and 2.4 apg

So you wanted Prohm to tell, Monte, Matt, Naz and Deonte sorry guys there's some guys that look better for next season so we'll just make due this year?

What.... No? How did you interpret that's what i was saying? Holden only scored over 8 points in two games this year and DNP-coaches decision in 10.

Holden had some okay in the non conference schedule and seemed like a good teammate but does anyone think ISU's record would be any different if he was not a member of the team?

Because you suggested a midseason transfer instead of Holden. We needed Holden, Bowie and Young to accomplish the season we had. Did Prohm add the wrong grad transfer maybe but who did Prohm take Holden over that would of been a difference maker for us this past season?

Like I said initially we had plenty of offense, Prohm had to find guys that could defend the post.

You're right that Holden probably impacted this team more than what shows up in the stat line. Neither one of us will know what the 2016-17 record would've been without him but, in my opinion, one of the mid years I listed would've had a greater impact on the future teams than Holdens 1 season of 56 points and 59 fouls.

Dude, hop back in your DeLorean and set the date for 2017...the past is the past...time to focus on transfers that can help next year.
The staff knew pretty early they missed on Holden. He was a bust that we doubled-down on. It turned out holding an open spot for a mid-year plus getting Young more development time would have been a better move.
