*** Official #14 IOWA STATE vs Texas (SAMSUBA) Game(Day) Thread ***

Somewhat related, I've always liked the "Fouls Suffered" (i.e. how many times you got fouled) stat in the European leagues, not sure why we don't track that here.

It's been an official boxscore category for the last 4-5 years.

Some thoughts on the game, having only watched the play-by-play and highlights

- @ZRF nailed one thing ahead of the game - we needed "bad Abmas" to show up and got it
- The 4-game tech foul streak is bananas, I've never seen anything like that
- Disu is really really good. We had him in foul trouble with the big lead, but never got the 4th on him
- Offensive rebounding won us the game - they did a great job on the boards.
- Milan's continual improvement is amazing to watch, outside of his spectacular offensive skillset. His defense has improved so much over the course of the season, and now he suddenly has 4 HUGE offensive rebounds in the last 2 games. He had 8 total offensive rebounds on the SEASON before that
- Right now Keshon is our leading scorer with 309 pts, and Tamin and Milan have 284 (Tamin on 1 fewer game). I still think Milan ends the season as the high scorer. My prediction is that at a key point in the season TJ is going to tweak the offense to run through Milan more and he'll have multiple 20-pt games
- I'm changing my tune a bit - number of made 3s has been absolutely determinative in conf outcomes:
- In our 3 conf losses, opponents are averaging 12 made 3s per game and shooting 43%.
- In our 6 conf wins opponents are averaging 6 made 3s per game and shooting 30%.
I tend to agree on Milan, but if I am an opposing coach, I'm probably putting my best defender on him. It's a process learning to score on elite defenders. As far as 3-pointers, out defense is built on shutting down points in the paint. That leaves us a little more vulnerable on the threes, but statistically the net effect has been positive. Most teams will win if they have multiple guys shooting lights out from the three-point line but most teams will shoot themselves out of a lot of games by excessively relying on the three.

Pav and Watson both gave us nice boosts in limited minutes last night, not sure what all the fuss is over here.
No kidding. Splitting hairs on minutes played by our bench players after a huge road win. Looking at the schedule going forward We're in the hunt for the big12 title! I was not expecting anything like this before the season. I liked the look of our incoming transfers (especially Gilbert) and figured Omaha to be what Milan ended up being (nice surprise, Omaha will get better), but we had some question marks coming in. Tamin's 3 pt shooting? Nice surprise and a testament to our coaches. TJ seems to get it dialed in more each week. The team's trajectory is looking good for the tourney.

My amateur perspective on TJ's defense is it works largely because it's so shockingly aggressive and teams don't see defenses like that very often, before you know it you've turned the ball over 10 times in your first 20 possessions and are down 15 points alreayd. This is also I think why we've struggled in the second half of conference play with the round-robin the previous two years, teams are seeing it for a second time and are ready for it and have realized "swing it or get it cross-court for an open three" is its weakness. The new unbalanced schedule will help us there this year, along with being better overall on offense.

My favorite thing to look at is how many more shots we get than our opponents. Often the shooting percentages are pretty similar, but we get up 12 or 15 more shots. That's huge.

"In my ripping the player... I'm just continually singling him out in the game threads."

It's really sad. Have some positivity and enjoy the game. You consistently show a lack of basic bball understanding. Texas got unbelievable hot in the second half.
But he says it like he knows what he's talking about, it must be true. :jimlad:

Have we ever had a good game avoiding to Z?

Couple thoughts:

I wish Pav would hunt for his shot around the 3 point line a little bit. He shot 39% from three last year at Wofford and shooting 40% from three this year. Granted, last year he only took about 3.5 threes per game and this year is 11/27 so not a huge sample size. He's pretty small so it surprises me how much he looks to drive instead of moving around the three point line looking to get open.

Rob did not have it last night and nearly cost us the game. 3/11 from the field as a post when all of your shots are around the rim is really bad. He should really never be taking more than 5 shots a game. On top of that, he couldn't guard Disu (not sure how many people in the country could have with how hot he got for that stretch in the second half) and was routinely out of position on defensive rebounds. I'd be curious to see how many starting center's in the country are the 4th leading rebounder on their team over the season.

Lipsey was decent all night but holy cow he took over when he needed to and he will win us so many more games over the next 2+ seasons. He reads the game so well and had a few offensive boards in the last few mins that led to us being able to kill some more clock, and obviously had the huge three and the assist to King to ice it. But my favorite play may have been with just over two mins left, Lipsey got put on Disu multiple times with the game on the line, and then in a scramble moment, was defending another guy but realized Curt Jones was going to guard him, saw the ball was coming to Disu and came from behind and knocked away a pass to Disu for a huge steal (Milan got credit for the steal but it was all Lipsey). Just a winning basketball play. And then oh yeah makes the three on the very next possession to go up 7.

I agree on Pav. It looks like his mindset is just to come in and play hard and not upset the rhythm. I think he can hit that shot as well as anyone not named Milan, so I want him to take 1 or 2.

Disu can be a matchup nightmare when he's fully engaged. Almost need a combination of Rob and Hasan in one player to try to check him, but that might not have worked the way he was playing in the second half.

I'm watching some right now in the 2nd half and Disu was scoring at will on Ward as well from inside and out.

UT was ranked No. 18 preseason. After last night, they have six conference losses. Only Oklahoma State has more losses than the Shorthorns. Rodney Terry for coach of the year /sarc/. Horns Down Forever.

Looking at the box score for this game, I see Tyrese Hunter put up a big zero for points. I see his game has become stagnat , at best. He really seems to have become a worse scorer than when he was a freshman. Great win for a really good Cyclone team on the road in a venue where the Clones have not had much success.
He just doesn’t have skills to be a great offensive player. He can’t drive and create shots like Lipsey and Gilbert, not a pure shooter like Bohannon, and he is too short to be a SG.

I saw where a Kansas State fan called us Hilton merchants. I guess I didn’t realize being 2-3 on the road so far is considered bad (0.1 seconds from being 3-2) They likely don’t understand how Big 12 basketball works.
